Merry Christmas weekend! If you were busy putting the
finishing touches on your holiday plans, you may not have had the time to check
out all the new music released this week. That makes this the perfect time to
take a look back at some of the new songs and music videos that came out over
the last seven days.
Despite the Christmas holiday fast approaching, a lot of
great new songs and music videos were released this week. Eminem,
Katy Perry and Macklemore, Nothing More, Thomas Rhett and Jack Johnson all
released new videos for songs from their respective new albums while Dashboard
Confessional put one out from his upcoming album. Panic! at the Disco released
a Christmas song just in time for the holiday. We got a new song from Kesha,
whose contribution to the ‘The Greatest Showman’ soundtrack was released this
week.
Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, has been
searching the web for the best new songs and music videos of the past week.
Here are seven of our favorites that we know you’ll enjoy.
1.
Dashboard
Confessional, “We Fight”: Though the song was released a few weeks ago and
has been all over alternative radio, Dashboard Confessional finally released a
video for “We Fight,” off their upcoming album ‘Crooked Shadows.’ An anthem for
those who had to find their own way in life, the video tries to emulate the lyrics.
The video shows frontman Chris Carrabba animated in a rotoscope-like fashion
belting out the song interspersed with animations of kids standing with their
fists in the air and growing up to be important historic figures. The imagery
could be a bit more defiant, but it gets its point across well. (video)
2.
Kesha,
“This Is Me”: Now that Kesha has come back to the musical fold, she has been
putting out amazing content. Even her track for the new film ‘The Greatest
Showman’ is great. “This Is Me” is an anthem pop tune filled with strength and confidence.
Kesha’s voice is on point, hitting every note and doing it with passion. (video)
3.
Panic! at the Disco, “Feels Like Christmas”:
This song should have been on our Christmas list earlier this week, especially
since it was trending on YouTube. “Feels Like Christmas” is the epitome of an
artist taking songs and turning them into something brand new. Here, Brendon
Urie starts off with an electrified “We Wish You a Merry Christmas,” then
brakes out into his own jazzy thing, referencing other classic Christmas songs
amongst his own holiday themed lyrics about love and presents. Once the beat is
added to the background, this becomes an extremely joyous jam that just makes
you want to dance. Then again, what P!@TD song doesn’t make you want to do that?

4.
Nothing More, “Do You Really Want It?”: “Do You
Really Want It?” is a socially conscious hard rock track in the vein of early P.O.D.
Driven by heavy guitars and a memorable melody and hard-hitting chorus and
hook. The song comments on people wanting to invoke change in the world without
changing their way of thinking first. (video)
5.
Jack
Johnson, “Big Sur”: If you’re looking for a little sunlight this cold
winter weekend, “Big Sur” has that island feel you need. The latest single from
Jack Johnson’s ‘All The Light Above It Too,’ the song marvels at the interconnectedness
of everything soundtracked by the easy strumming of the guitar. (video)
6.
Bugg, “Whiskey in the Water”: Bugg’s “Whiskey in
the Water” has a great 90’s –inspired garage-rock tune that pulls in elements
of grunge and indie rock to create something new. The vocals are a bit deadpan,
but it works for the overall feel of the track. (video)
7.
Thomas Rhett, “Marry Me”: A depressing story about
a man whose girl is getting married to another man, “Marry Me” hits all the right
chords for a great sad country song. Melodically, it sounds a little like
Taylor Swifts “Style” at points, but is distinct enough that it overcomes the
similarity. (video)
These are some of our favorite new songs and music videos of
the past week that we think are worth a listen/view. Take a break from the
busyness of the Christmas season, check these out and have a rocking holiday.
