Another week has flown by. Now that the weekend is upon us,
it’s time to take a look back at some of the best songs and music videos that
came out over the last seven days.
This week saw the release of a lot of great new rock and pop
songs and music videos. Ed Sheeran released a new version of one of his recent
hits. The National, Morrissey and OK Go all released new music videos for
singles from their recently released albums. We got to hear the last known work
of Lemmy Kilmister. New Found Glory got nostalgic with a new, non-album track.
Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, has been scouring
the internet for the latest new songs and music videos. Here are nine released
this week that we think will be worth checking out.
1.
Ed Sheeran & Beyoncé,
“Perfect”: Ed Sheeran released a new version of his single “Perfect” this week,
this time as a duet with Beyoncé. The lyrics get tweaked a little in the second
verse to suit a second singer, in this case hetero-female, which works really
well because it actually sounds like two people singing to each other. Equally
amazing is that Beyoncé, who has a tendency to steal the show when it comes to duets,
doesn’t overpower Sheeran on his own song. (Video)
2.
New Found Glory, “20 Years From Now”: Recorded during
the sessions for their latest album, ‘Makes Me Sick,’ “20 Years From Now” is a
sentimental non-album track that, according to guitarist Chad Gilbert, “is
about letting go of worry to feel true freedom.” It’s not the peppy, punky New
Found Glory we were first introduced to with zany music videos, but a more
introspective one, singing with honesty and maturity. This is the kind of song
that makes you contemplate your life and where it’s going. The video is just as
sentimental as the song, taking a look back at just how far the band has come
in the last two decades through home footage from throughout their music career
(it’s also better done than a lot of other compiled footage videos I’ve seen).

3.
The
National, “Dark Side of the Gym”: “Dark Side of the Gym,” the latest single
from The National’s new album ‘Sleep Well Beast,’ is a low-key love song that
swallows you in warmth. The melody is highlighted by a small string section
while the beat grounds the song, giving it an unexpected rockabilly feel. This
is the perfect soundtrack to the dancing like that done in the video. (Video)
4.
Chris Declercq feat. Lemmy Kilmister, “We Are
The Ones”: The first single from guitarist Chris Declercq’s solo debut, “We Are
The Ones” doubles as Lemmy Kilmister’s final studio recording. The late Motörhead
frontman lent his gritty vocals to the track, giving a strong vocal performance
over Declercq’s precise, heavy, electrified guitar riffs. (Video)
5.
OK Go, “Obsession”: OK Go are great at putting
together flawless and creative music videos that articulate their music really
well. The band has done it again with their latest single, “Obsession,” from
their new album, ‘Hungry Ghosts.’ The
song itself sits on the electronic side of their sound, heavily relying on synths,
thumping drums and electronically-enhanced guitars rather than full-on melody. For
the video, which is sponsored by Double A printer paper, the band used 567
printers to create the kind of moving background most directors would achieve
using colored lights. The image changes precisely with every sonic movement, a
combination of stop motion and real-time printing. (Video)
6.
Speak The Truth Even If Your Voice Shakes, “Drowning
on the Sidewalk or Dying Inside”: While “Drowning” is lyrically very dark, you
would never know it from the upbeat nature of the melody. The song has a
memorable pop-punk hook that really grabs you and keeps you listening. Also,
for fans of ‘Stranger Things,’ the video’s concept is based on the show. (Video)
7.
TJ Kong & the Atomic Bomb, “California
Basement Blues”: “California Basement Blues” blends the best of 60s surf rock with
the Americana punk of Social
Distortion. The song starts off a bit slow, but eventually breaks out of
the winding intro to shake things up. (Video)
8.
Morrissey,
“Jackie’s Only Happy When She’s Up on the Stage”: The latest single from
Morrissey’s new solo album, ‘Low In High School,’ “Jackie’s Only Happy When She’s
Up on the Stage” is a new wave-y stream of consciousness song about a girl
whose losing control of her life. A s her world implodes on itself, the dynamic
of the song changes mid-song, getting more frantic and immediate. The video
features a bare-chested Morrissey in a suit dancing on a Bandstand-like set with
other bare-chested men in track suits danced behind him. Like the song, the set
implodes with that dynamic shift. (Video)
9.
The XCerts, “Hold on to Your Heart”: “Hold on to
Your Heart” sounds like what would happen if Tom
Petty had collaborated with The Wallflowers. The song has a soaring melody with
Americana undertones paced by steady snare drum hits. Not to mention this video
looks like it came directly out of the 1990s. (Video)
These are some of our favorite new songs and music videos
released over the past week. Check these out and kick off the weekend with some
new tunes.
