Top Ten Vinyl Record Myths

TOP TEN
Vinyl Record Myths
Brought to you by:

MYTH # 10
Only old music sells on vinyl
False.
In 2009, Radiohead was the #1 selling artist on vinyl.

(Source: Soundscan 2009)
MYTH # 9
Vinyl is dead
Not even close.
Vinyl is the only physical music medium that is increasing in sales. In
2009, more than 2.5 million vinyl records were sold in the United States.
Best Buy, the third largest music retailer, now has 50 stores that carry
vinyl albums. Check out these articles on the rebirth of vinyl:

MYTH # 8
New vinyl manufacturing equipment is currently being manufactured
False.
There’s no doubt that pressing machinery is in high demand with the
incredible resurgence of vinyl records. However, very little new manufacturing equipment is being made today. For example, the last cutting lathes were manufactured in the 1980s, and can only be found through independent service consultants and cutting room service departments.

MYTH # 7
7″ vinyl cut at 33rpm sounds as good as 12″ vinyl cut at 33rpm
False.
It’s never a good idea to cut a 7″ at 33 rotations per minute, it generally
sounds bad. 7″ records are smaller, so naturally the grooves are more
compressed. As the grooves get closer to the center of a record the groove
width is reduced. Therefore, at the slower speed of 33rpm, distortion can be highly noticeable and cause an unattractive sound. With the circumference of 12″ records, there is more surface area to experiment with. It is more manageable to engrave the outside of the disc where there is better frequency response and minimal tracing distortion. If you have your heart set on putting out a 7″ record, remember that it is highly recommended to record at the speed of 45rpm.

MYTH # 6
7″ vinyl always comes with a big spindle hole
False.
Back in the 1950s, 7″ records were made with large spindle holes for one
main reason: it allows easier handling by jukeboxes. You can still find
them, and Record Pressing can still make them with both large and small
spindle holes.

MYTH # 5
Gold records are made of gold
False.
If this were true, I would have tried getting my hands on one a long time ago. When an artist goes “gold” or “platinum” it refers to the number of albums that were sold. Initially, trimmed and plated metal masters, mothers, or stampers were used to make the awards. Most gold and platinum records are actual vinyl records dipped in metallic paint. Sorry metal detector aficionados.

MYTH # 4
You can NOT play a lacquer master on a record player
False.
Yes you can! If you have a turntable or lathe that accommodates a 14 inch disc, the size of lacquer masters, you can play it. You can even play the mother, a metal version of the record. The only thing you cannot play on a record player is a stamper itself because these are created as the negatives meaning that the grooves are reversed.

MYTH # 3
Direct Metal Mastering (DMM) sounds better than lacquer mastering
False.
There is a difference between the two processes, but there is a consensus that lacquer mastering simply has a better, warmer sound. DMM works well with long LPs – there is better pitch control in the system (for those that have not been back-converted to lacquer as most have), which is better for longer lengths (albums etc.). There is also higher frequency response and, because of this, grooves cannot be cut as deep and there is sometimes a tin-type sound to DMM. For warmer, deeper sound and better base response, lacquer mastering is the way to go. Lacquers can also be significantly louder on EP’s or singles than DMM. Have you ever wondered where dubstep gets that explosive bass that shakes your entire body? That’s lacquer mastering at its finest.

MYTH # 2
Record labels are glued on
False.
In the vinyl manufacturing process, special paper is used and baked to remove all moisture that makes adhesion possible. There is no glue used in the manufacturing process. Instead, special PVC melted into rubber patties, called “biscuits,” are placed between two record labels in a press. A metal stamper is used to apply pressure at a very hot temperature to melt and mold the biscuit and labels together to create the vinyl record.
Check out this YouTube video to see the process:

MYTH # 1
You can cut deeper grooves in a 180 gram record than in a thinner record
False.
A record press can only produce grooves that are as deep as the cuts in the lacquer master. This depth is far shallower than any record thickness. Consequently, the thickness or thinness of the record has no impact on the depth of the grooves. Considering this, there has yet to be a record made where the two sides of the grooves meet in the middle meaning a thicker record is not necessarily advantageous. However, some artists, producers and consumers prefer the benefits of a thicker record which include reduced warp, less breakage, longer lasting quality, and that the weight of the records make them nicer to hold.

Vinyl Bay 777 talks Vinyl Revival

Vinyl Revival Stumps Digital Age

Vinyl records, the kind that we here at Vinyl Bay 777 love to frame, study, and spin, are undoubtedly technology from last century.  In an era where a gadget the size of your hand can store half a terabyte of data, translating into thousands of songs spanning hundreds of albums, it sounds almost quaint that physically distributed music – cold, hard media such as Compact Disks and magnetic tape - could stand up to digital downloads.  With electronic audio formats such as MP3's dominating in the cost, storage space, quality and, sadly, ease-of-piracy categories, the only leg left for solid media to stand on is the value of touch.  Surprisingly for many who don't work with us at Vinyl Bay 777, the soft grooves of vinyl records have managed to provide physical media a grip on the sales charts long after their supposed death at the hands of CD's.

According to Wikipedia, global sales in Vinyl have skyrocketed from around $55 million in 2007 to $171 million in 2012.  $55 million of that growth came between 2011 and 2012 alone.  This resurrection of a media form once written off as dead is being called the “Vinyl Revival,” a term popularized in part by Britain's The Independent's use of the term in their 2012 article, The Rapacity Of The Record Revival.

Part of the reason for the Vinyl Revival's success has been its status symbol as part of collector-edition sets for groups like the Foo Fighters, or pre-order packages for bands like Silversun Pickups.  In the case of pre-order packages, sometimes an MP3 copy of the album is included with the purchase, merging digital and physical distribution.  Collectors can hold on to their mint-condition vinyl albums and still listen to the music they bought!  Plus, no amount of internet uploading can duplicate a physical object, so sales officials can rest assured that they will get an excellent mark-up on their merchandise even if the MP3 files find their way to a torrent site.

Speaking to The Independent in its Record Revival article, Sean Bidder, the creative director of Vinyl Foundry, argued that it was worth “another few pounds” to create a vinyl album because of its superior “quality and craftsmanship.”  We at Vinyl Bay 777 completely agree.  We love feeling the velvety grooves of our albums, and that's why we got into the industry.
The Vinyl Revival is about more than just sales figures:  It's about craftsmanship, nostalgia, and good tunes along the way!

Teens Discover the Appeal of Vinyl Records

Records are spinning once again.
Students are discovering a love for the sound of vinyl records.
It`s cool to have this thing you can stare at, something physical with lyrics and a poster you can pull out,” says Tim Peterson, proprietor of Squeezebox, a local Evanston record and book store. “There`s two age groups who come in, younger people and the older people who have cycled through everything; it`s fun to go back and dig up old favorites.”
Recent trends in recorded music show that teens have started to purchase the more expensive and less convenient vinyl records. Records use an analog means of recording and playback, as opposed to the more common digitally compressed format of compact disc or MP3. Some say that the unique sound is what drives teens to buy vinyl.
“The needle is like a wave making the sound, it`s a vibration,” says Sam Brewer, senior. “Vinyl is a different sound and more bands are pressing their own.”
While vinyl has always been common in underground groups, popular artists have also found success on the turntable.
“We sell a lot of new stuff,” says Peterson. Nielson Data shows vinyl record sales to be 40% higher compared to the same time last year. With an increased number of people buying records, some observers are saying that kids are following the “hipster” trend and buying records to act cool.
“It`s a 50/50 split,” says Noah Roth, sophomore. “Some people do it just to be alternative and some people do genuinely appreciate the quality of sound.”
Others argue that records are too pricey to attract hipsters. “99 percent of kids have a genuine interest,” says Peterson. “Records are expensive and you have to be dedicated.” Despite the more expensive prices and physically bigger size, kids still seem to be attracted to records.
“I like the artwork and sleeve. It is informative of the artist`s message,” says Patrick Baranovskis, junior. “I started listening because of my parents large record selection; it`s more traditional.”
“My earliest memories were listening to vinyl with my dad,” says Roth. “Vinyl is more high maintenance; you have make sure you don’t damage it, you have to flip it over; records are more personal and involved.”
“People by nature like collecting things, it represents them and it communicates interests with others. You can share it,” adds Peterson. “Holding, flipping over, and hunting for a record makes it fun.”
What was thought to have died 20 years ago has returned guns-a-blazing. With vinyl`s revival comes promising outlets for bands and music fans.
“Saying it is dead was a misconception,” comments Roth. “This comeback shows people will do weird things to keep a counterculture going.”

The Best Way to Clean Vinyl Records as told by Vinyl Bay 777

To ensure the best sound and least amount of wear on your records, it is essential that they are kept clean. Vinyl Bay 777 's rule of thumb is to never play an album until it has been sufficiently cleaned.

Here is Vinyl Bay 777 's tried and true method for liberating a record from all the dirt, dust, mold and fingerprints it may have acquired over the years - all without special fluid. We will show you a method that utilizes soap, water and a record brush.

For records with only light amounts of dust, we recommend just brushing them off with a carbon fiber brush before playback. As any record collector knows, only about 10% of used records actually come in that condition. For the other 90%, wash them off. Remember, the best cleaning in the world just removes all the dust and dirt. Some records will have scratches and groove wear. No amount of cleaning will fix this. So after cleaning, some record may sound “perfect” and others maybe not so much.

Vinyl Bay 777 's Step - By - Step Guide to Cleaning Your Records

Step 1: Gather Your Cleaning Supplies.
You'll need the following:
-A Basin of some kind
-Dish soap (any kind will work)
-A record cleaning brush/pad (Disc-washer style)
-A few washcloths
-A source of warm water
-A sink with faucet
-Records to wash
-A clean surface to put the records on (their cardboard sleeves)
-Two hands
-Towels to dry off the records

Step 2: Prepare Your Water
Put an extremely small amount of soap in the basin, and then fill it with about 3-4" of warm water. To activate the soap, stir it around with your hand while filling up the basin. Now place the basin on a counter top or other comfortable surface where you will be cleaning your records.

Step 3: Washing Your Records
Put a record in the basin, and turn it around by moving the edge with the palms of your hands (as to not touch the grooves). Once the whole surface of the record is wet, grab the record brush and get it wet. With one hand, hold the record (with your palm) and with the other, move the brush in a circular motion about 10 times. If you've got heavy grime, you might want to do more. After one side is clean, flip it over and repeat.

Step 4: Rinse Your Record
After you've gotten the record clean, put it in a sink and run some cold water over it, and turn the record with the palms of your hand. After one side is clean, flip it over and do the other. After it's clean, turn off the tap and let the water run off.

Step 5: Drying Your Record
Now that most of the water has run off, put a wash cloth in your hand, and grab the record with it. Now put another washcloth in the other hand, and grab the record.
With one hand, hold the record, and with the other, dry it off. Once it's dry, flip it over and do the other side (which should be almost dry by now). Once the record surface is dry, put the washcloths on the labels and press against them with your hand. This should get the labels dry. After the record is mostly dry, set it on top of it's cardboard sleeve, then place it somewhere and let it dry for an hour or so.

Vinyl Bay 777 hopes that your record is now sounding better than ever. Take a look in our store to find some more great music. We are constantly adding new Vinyl Records LPs and CDs into our collection. Check them out.
