Year in Review: Vinyl Bay 777’s Top Songs of 2017 (Part Two)

Sunday night marks the end of 2017. This is usually a time to reflect on all the good and bad that has happened over the last year. That also goes for music, as this is also a great time to look back at all the great tunes released in 2017.

Earlier this week, Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, brought you eight of our favorite songs of 2017. However, eight songs don’t do all the great music released this year any justice. That is why we are back with eight more songs that grabbed our attention this year.

1.       Haim, “Want You Back”: Sister trio Haim made the comeback people were waiting for in 2017 when they released their sophomore album,’ Something to Tell You.’ The album was worth the wait, especially first single “Want You Back.” Harking back to classic rock and pop songs of the 1970s and 80s, the song has an infectious groove that makes you want to get up and dance. (video)

2.       Enter Shikari, “Live Outside”: Filled with electronic fanfare and punk rock energy, “Live Outside” bombards you with so much power and bravado that you have to take notice. With such a strong single, it’s a shame these guys didn’t get more hype in the United States. (video)

3.       Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee, “Despacito”: Arguably the biggest song of the year, “Despacito” too the world by storm, becoming the most popular Spanish song since 1996’s “Macarena.” It also helps that the hook is so catchy it gets stuck in your head. (video)

4.       Harry Styles, “Sign of the Times”: You would think that a former boy band member would follow in the same pop path as his band, but that wasn’t the case for One Direction’s Harry Styles. The singer decided to take a more indie-rock approach to his self-titled debut album, introducing it to the world with lead single “Sign of the Times.” A down-tempo track heavily influenced by British rock, the song’s piano-driven melody is both beautiful and memorable. (video)

5.       Carly Rae Jepsen, “Cut to the Feeling”: Jepsen is always good for a feel good pop song and she provided that in spades this year with “Cut to the Feeling.” The song has a chorus that screams out in joy. Pitchfork called it “bombastic,” which is a great word for this song. (video)

6.       Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, “Hope the High Road”: “Hope the High Road” is a politically pointed alt-country piece about taking the “high road” over those that are trying to bring us down. Isbell’s no-nonsense lyricism and strong, hummable melody compliment the song’s biting theme perfectly. (video)

7.       PVRIS, “What’s Wrong”: PVRIS came out strong this year with “What’s Wrong,” the first single from their sophomore album ‘All We Know of Heaven, All We Need of Hell.’ The song has a strong and powerful melody that grabs you and keeps you invested as it rises and falls. It has all the theatrics of an Evanescence song with its footing squarely on the hardcore side of pop-punk. “What’s Wrong” also arguably happens to have one of the best videos of the year. (video)

8.       Courtney Barnett & Kurt Vile, “Over Everything”: Of all the indie-rock duets, Courtney Barnett and & Kurt Vile’s collaboration on 2017’s ‘Lotta Sea Lice’ was one of the most anticipated and one of the best. “Over Everything,” the album’s first single, proves that the two singer-songwriters have great chemistry, as their vocal and writing styles mesh well. The lyrics play out like a stream of consciousness conversation between two musicians talking about their processes, which is probably exactly what this song is. (video)

There were a lot of amazing songs released in 2017. From indie-rock to Latin crossover hits to newcomers with big voices, there was a lot to get behind this year. Check out our favorite songs from the past year and let us know what songs you couldn’t stop listening to.

Rock Out into the New Year with These Live Shows in New York This Weekend (December 29-31, 2017)

New Years is a time to both reflect on the year that has passed and celebrate the incoming one with open arms. Why not send off 2017 and welcome in 2018 the right way with one more wild night of rock music by checking out a live show?

There are a lot of shows happening in New York surrounding the New Year. Phish will be making their 10th New Years appearance at Madison Square Garden. Gogol Bordello, Matisyahu and Glassjaw will be bringing their tours through the area this weekend. Dillinger Escape Plan will be playing their final show ever. And that doesn’t even account for all the club and dance parties being thrown to ring in 2018.

Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, loves live music. That’s why we’ve been scouring the internet for the weekend’s hottest shows in New York. Here are eight that we think will bring 2017 to the perfect end.

1.       Gogol Bordello: Don some purple and check out gypsy punks Gogol Bordello as they take on Brooklyn tonight. The band is currently in the middle of a world tour behind their latest effort, ‘Seekers and Finders.’ (Friday, Brooklyn Steel)

2.       Patent Pending: If you missed Long Island pop-punk band Patent Pending’s annual X-Mosh show in Amityville last weekend, the band will be back in New York tonight to play their debut album, ‘Save Each Other, The Whales are Doing Just Fine,’ in its entirety again. The band will be joined by original vocalist Michael Ragosta for the show. These guys have an amazing stage presence, bringing together catchy music, tongue-in-cheek humor, “choreographed dancing” and more. (Friday, Knitting Factory)

3.       Matisyahu: Jewish reggae sensation Matisyahu’s Broken Crowns tour comes to Long Island tonight. Appealing to music lovers of all faiths, his shows are both spiritual and energetic. Not a bad way to spend a Shabbat evening. (Friday, The Paramount Huntington)

4.       Phish: Phish return to Madison Square Garden this weekend for their annual New Year’s shows. The run started last night and goes through Sunday, bringing the band’s Garden shows up to 17 for the year (17 in 17)and 56 in total. This is the band’s 10th New Years run at the famed venue (Friday – Sunday, Madison Square Garden)

5.       Dillinger Escape Plan: This is your final chance to see New Jersey metalcore band Dillinger Escape Plan live. The band will be calling it quits after tonight’s show. Opening the show will be Code Orange and Daughters. (Friday, Terminal 5)

6.       Glassjaw: Glassjaw released their third album, ‘Material Control,’ earlier this month, their first full album in 15 years. Now the band is back on the road, playing Long Island this weekend. New York hardcore legends The Cro-Mags will be opening, so this is looking to be an amazing show. (Saturday, The Paramount Huntington)

7.       Macy Gray: Macy Gray’s 2016 jazz album, ‘Stripped,’ was very well received by critics and fans alike, moving her career in a new direction.  The raspy-voiced singer will be continuing her foray into jazz this weekend, playing four shows at New York jazz club Iridium to ring in the New Year. (Saturday & Sunday, Iridium)

8.       They Might Be Giants: They Might Be Giants will be returning to New York this weekend to ring in the New Year. The band, who’s quirky brand of alt-rock has made them fan favorites, is getting ready to release their 20th album, ‘I Like Fun,’ in January. (Saturday & Sunday, Music Hall of Williamsburg)

Year in Review: Vinyl Bay 777’s Top Songs of 2017

Sunday night marks the end of 2017. This is usually a time to reflect on all the good and bad that has happened over the last year. That also goes for music, as this is also a great time to look back at all the great tunes released in 2017.

A lot happened in the world of music in 2017. Ed Sheeran, Kesha, Eminem, Haim and Taylor Swift, among others, all had highly-anticipated new releases that had everyone talking all year long. Artists like Portugal. The Man and St. Vincent were able to attain mainstream success.

Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, would like to take this opportunity to look back at some of our own favorite songs from 2017. Here are eight that grabbed our attention throughout the year, and in some cases launched the artist into the mainstream.

1.       Portugal. The Man, “Feel It Still”: Portugal. The Man had one of the biggest songs of the year with “Feel It Still,” the second single from their eighth album, ‘Woodstock.’ Aided by its placement in Vitamin Water’s television commercials (which are still being aired months later), the song has this infectious groove that sucks you in and doesn’t let go. Singer John Gorley’s falsetto is intriguing too, as if trying to emulate the voice of the song’s character, not just tell her story. The band released two other singles from the album, and while “Live in the Moment” also became popular, it never had the reach that “Feel It Still” did. (video)

2.       Neck Deep, “In Bloom”: Neck Deep really broke out in 2017 with their single “In Bloom.” Set to a catchy melody with a solid, memorable hook in the chorus, “In Bloom” is a reflective track about self-improvement. The song’s success helped the band’s third album, ‘The Peace and the Panic,’ become their best-selling to date. (video)

3.       Ed Sheeran, “Shape of You”: Ed Sheeran’s return in 2017 with his third album, ‘÷,’ was massive. Since the album’s release in March, you couldn’t get away from him (not that you would necessarily want to). Out of all the singles released from the album, “Shape of You” arguably had the most impact this year. With its dance-club beat and catchy melody, it became the most streamed song of the year on Spotify and spent a fifth of the year on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. (video)

4.       St. Vincent, “Los Ageless”: St. Vincent had a big year in 2017. Her new album, ‘Masseduction,’ reached number 10 on the Billboard 200, her highest placement on the chart yet. The album’s popularity was preceded by three outstanding, unique singles. We’ve chosen “Los Ageless” for this list because of its memorable 80s new wave/synth-pop vibe. (video)

5.       P!nk, “What About Us”: P!nk has never been one to shy away from wearing her heart on her sleeve in her music. Such is evidenced in her bold, political new album, ‘Beautiful Trauma,’ and especially its first single, “What About Us.” The song is a passionate plea for answers in a world that feels like it is swallowing us whole. It helps that this plea is backed by a beautiful melody and biting lyrics. (video)

6.       Kesha, “Praying”: Kesha has been through a lot over the last few years which led to a long drought in music from the boisterous singer. That changed in 2017 when she released ‘Rainbow’ and it’s strong lead single “Praying.” The song debuted a new, more mature side of Kesha that we hadn’t heard previously, one that shows off her vocal abilities and passion, proving that she doesn’t need to seem drunk to make a good song. (video)

7.       Paramore, “Hard Times”: If Paramore’s self-titled 2013 album broke the band into the mainstream, 2017’s ‘After Laughter’ proves that that is where they belong. The album moves the band further towards 80s-inspired new wave, synth-pop and funk, as evidenced on lead single “Hard Times.” The song is an upbeat track about falling on “hard times” and feeling useless, a common theme among the songs on the new album. (video)

8.       Linkin Park, “Heavy”: Linkin Park went in a completely different direction with 2017’s ‘One More Light.’ Known for their mixture of hip-hop beats and melodic rock, the band focused heavily on the melodic part of their sound. The change was very polarizing, but it arguably led to some of their most poignant work. “Heavy,” the album’s lead single, is one of the band’s most emotional (behind the album’s title single), as well as one of their strongest lyrically and melodically. The song took them out of this box and proved that they could be more than just a nu-metal band. (video)

Between all the highly-anticipated albums that met their hype to the singles that took the world by storm, 2017 was a year filled with great music. Take a look back by checking out our favorite songs of the year above and let us know what songs you loved in 2017.

Seven Songs Timed To Start the New Year off Right

A new meme has popped up over the last couple of weeks where people suggest how to perfectly time a song so that the best part coincides with the stroke of midnight. For example, Bull Moose Records tweeted on December 17 that if you listen to Phil Collins’ “In The Air Tonight” at exactly 11:56:44, the song’s massive drum fill will come in right as the ball drops. Over the last few weeks, more and more people have been participating, giving their own suggestions for songs and television moments to play, as well as songs to leave behind in the New Year.

There are a lot of great moments in music that are worthy of highlighting the New Year’s arrival. That’s why Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, is hopping on the trend and giving you some of our own time stamp suggestions. Here are seven to highlight your countdown to 2018.

1.       Queen, “Bohemian Rhapsody”: Okay, the first one is not our own. Ultimate Classic Rock suggests playing “Bohemian Rhapsody” at exactly 11:55:53 PM or approximately 4 minutes and 10 seconds in. That’s the point at which the song will transition into that final, iconic guitar riff, leading everyone to jump up and down, head bang and go crazy. (video)

2.       Queen, “We Are the Champions”: With a chord structure and feel similar to a hard rock version of “Auld Lang Syne,” you could easily play “We Are the Champions” during your count down too. Start playing at 11:59:30, or about 30 seconds into the song, to get that build-up before the bravado of the first chorus. (video)

3.       Blur, “Song 2”: “Song 2” is two minutes of non-stop Brit-pop energy, perfect for getting any party started. And if you start the song at 11:59:44 (approximately 16 seconds into the song), you can have that iconic “Woo Hoo” shout in the New Year! (video)

4.       Portugal. The Man, “Live in the Moment”: The band’s second single from their latest album, “Live in the Moment” begs the listener to do just that in the catchiest way possible. It’s also a great sentiment to bring into the New Year with you. Turn it on at 11:59:22 (approximately 38 seconds into the song) to launch into the first “la las” of the song. (video)

5.       Chumbawamba, “Tubthumpting”: A song you’ve probably heard at every party since the mid-1990s, “Tubthumping” never fails to get people dancing. Set this song up at 11:59:50, right as you’re getting ready to count down, so midnight starts off with a jump. The song doubles as a reminder that you’ll keep getting back up in the New Year, because people will “never keep [you] down.” (video)

6.       The Isley Brothers, “Shout”: “Shout” is another song that you hear at just about every party. It’s just such a happy, joyous song. So why not bring that into your New Years countdown. The whole song is over the top in energy, but if you start the track up at 11:56:30 (3:30 minutes into the song), the song will be getting “a little bit louder now” 3:30 minutes into it until it bursts out again with those “heys” at midnight, 15 seconds later. (video)

7.       A Great Big World, “This Is The New Year”: A personal favorite New Years song of ours, “This Is The New Year” is both sentimental and optimistic. If you want to start the year off with something beautiful, start playing this song at 11:59:24 and the second verse will boom in as the ball drops. (video)

The best way to start off the year is to have the perfect soundtrack ready to play when the ball drops. Check out these perfect moments and let us know what song you would cue up to play you ring in the New Year.

Week in Review: New Songs/Music Videos You Need to Check Out (December 17-23, 2017)

Merry Christmas weekend! If you were busy putting the finishing touches on your holiday plans, you may not have had the time to check out all the new music released this week. That makes this the perfect time to take a look back at some of the new songs and music videos that came out over the last seven days.

Despite the Christmas holiday fast approaching, a lot of great new songs and music videos were released this week. Eminem, Katy Perry and Macklemore, Nothing More, Thomas Rhett and Jack Johnson all released new videos for songs from their respective new albums while Dashboard Confessional put one out from his upcoming album. Panic! at the Disco released a Christmas song just in time for the holiday. We got a new song from Kesha, whose contribution to the ‘The Greatest Showman’ soundtrack was released this week.

Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, has been searching the web for the best new songs and music videos of the past week. Here are seven of our favorites that we know you’ll enjoy.

1.       Dashboard Confessional, “We Fight”: Though the song was released a few weeks ago and has been all over alternative radio, Dashboard Confessional finally released a video for “We Fight,” off their upcoming album ‘Crooked Shadows.’ An anthem for those who had to find their own way in life, the video tries to emulate the lyrics. The video shows frontman Chris Carrabba animated in a rotoscope-like fashion belting out the song interspersed with animations of kids standing with their fists in the air and growing up to be important historic figures. The imagery could be a bit more defiant, but it gets its point across well. (video)

2.       Kesha, “This Is Me”: Now that Kesha has come back to the musical fold, she has been putting out amazing content. Even her track for the new film ‘The Greatest Showman’ is great. “This Is Me” is an anthem pop tune filled with strength and confidence. Kesha’s voice is on point, hitting every note and doing it with passion. (video)

3.       Panic! at the Disco, “Feels Like Christmas”: This song should have been on our Christmas list earlier this week, especially since it was trending on YouTube. “Feels Like Christmas” is the epitome of an artist taking songs and turning them into something brand new. Here, Brendon Urie starts off with an electrified “We Wish You a Merry Christmas,” then brakes out into his own jazzy thing, referencing other classic Christmas songs amongst his own holiday themed lyrics about love and presents. Once the beat is added to the background, this becomes an extremely joyous jam that just makes you want to dance. Then again, what P!@TD song doesn’t make you want to do that? (video)

4.       Nothing More, “Do You Really Want It?”: “Do You Really Want It?” is a socially conscious hard rock track in the vein of early P.O.D. Driven by heavy guitars and a memorable melody and hard-hitting chorus and hook. The song comments on people wanting to invoke change in the world without changing their way of thinking first. (video)

5.       Jack Johnson, “Big Sur”: If you’re looking for a little sunlight this cold winter weekend, “Big Sur” has that island feel you need. The latest single from Jack Johnson’s ‘All The Light Above It Too,’ the song marvels at the interconnectedness of everything soundtracked by the easy strumming of the guitar. (video)

6.       Bugg, “Whiskey in the Water”: Bugg’s “Whiskey in the Water” has a great 90’s –inspired garage-rock tune that pulls in elements of grunge and indie rock to create something new. The vocals are a bit deadpan, but it works for the overall feel of the track. (video)

7.       Thomas Rhett, “Marry Me”: A depressing story about a man whose girl is getting married to another man, “Marry Me” hits all the right chords for a great sad country song. Melodically, it sounds a little like Taylor Swifts “Style” at points, but is distinct enough that it overcomes the similarity. (video)

These are some of our favorite new songs and music videos of the past week that we think are worth a listen/view. Take a break from the busyness of the Christmas season, check these out and have a rocking holiday.

6.       Moshav: Hanukkah isn’t the only time for Jewish music. Joining them will be Kosha Dills (whose Jewish raps and freestyles never cease to amaze live), Zalman Krause, Meir Kay and Chillent. (Monday, Highline Ballroom)

New Christmas Songs for Your Holiday Party Playlist

Music is a big part of Christmas. It helps you get into the holiday spirit, as well as expresses the joyousness of the season. However, radio stations tend to play the same renditions of classic holiday tracks ad nausea at this time of year. And while these are classics for a reason, they can become a bit stale after a while.

There are a lot of artist who released original Christmas songs this year. Both Sia and Chance the Rapper released wholly original Christmas albums. Violinist Lindsey Sterling released a new holiday album this year with some of her own compositions. Pop artists like Gwen Stefani, Hanson and Mariah Carey all put out original songs this year, as did rock and alternative artists like The Maine and Sufjan Stevens.

To get in the holiday spirit, Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, has been checking out some of this year’s new Christmas originals. Here are seven that are sure to spice up your holiday playlist.

1.       Lindsey Sterling feat. Becky G, “Christmas C’mon”: I included this song in a recent “week in review,” but it deserves a mention here too. Unlike a lot of instrumentalists working with singers, Sterling’s violin does not get lost in the mix with on “Christmas C’mon.” In fact, it stands out as another voice, complimenting Becky G’s. (video)

2.       The Maine, “Winter Means Nothing”: The Maine have had a banner year with their latest album, ‘Lovely Little Lonely,’ and have now released a new Christmas EP. The EP’s first single, “Winter Means Nothing,” is a somber song about missing your significant other during the holiday season. Because without love, the season “means nothing.” The song is just as good as anything on “Lovely Little Lonely,” continuing the forward momentum the band has been building this year. (video)

3.       Gwen Stefani feat. Blake Shelton, “You Make It Feel Like Christmas”: Gwen Stefani’s foray into country music, “You Make It Feel Like Christmas” is a high-energy holiday love song ripe for professing one’s love for the person next to them. Blake Shelton’s country twang comes through as the main melodic influence, though some of Stefani’s pop tones can be heard as well. (video)

4.       Sia, “Candy Cane Lane”: Sia decided to release an entire album of Christmas originals this year. “Candy Cane Lane” is the most adorable and joyous of these tracks. While some of the other tracks are either incoherent or about bourbon, this song peps you up and gets you into the holiday spirit. (video)

5.       Hanson, “It’s Finally Christmas”: After 20 years, Hanson finally released a new Christmas album, as well as a very upbeat original single. “It’s Finally Christmas,” the album’s title track, feels like one big Christmas party. The song perfectly mixes the band’s pop, country, jazz and rock influences with lyrics about celebrating the season and feeling that Christmas cheer. (video)

6.       Mariah Carey, “Lil Snowman”: It’s not Christmas without Mariah Carey. The legendary singer put out a new song to coincide with her new holiday special this year. Trading in her signature pop high notes for a little rockabilly flair, “Lil Snowman” finds Carey singing to her “little snowman” about how cool Santa is. The song is upbeat and ready for livening up the dancing at your holiday party. (vinyl)

7.       Sufjan Stevens, “The Greatest Gift”: Not all holiday songs have to be peppy, or about Santa Claus or Christ. Sufjan Stevens makes it clear in his low-key new track, “The Greatest Gift,” that being with friends and family is the best gift of all. (video)

These are some of this year’s best new original Christmas songs. Add these to your holiday playlist and have a great holiday season.

Why Vinyl Records Make Great Holiday Gifts

Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, looks at why you should get the music lover in your life the gift of vinyl

With Christmas less than a week away and Hanukkah almost over, the thought of finding the perfect last minute gift can seem daunting. If you’re still looking for something to get the music lover in your life, why not consider getting them the gift of vinyl records.
It’s no surprise that vinyl has been making a resurgence over the last decade. More and more people have been purchasing the analog medium, making for its highest sales numbers since the 1980s. In 2016 alone, sales went up nearly 26% from the previous year while other physical mediums, like CDs, continued to lag. Even digital sales lagged for the first time last year. Events like Record Store Day bring more awareness to the vinyl format, in turn helping to create a new environment and audience for it.

So despite this newfound popularity, why should you get your music-loving loved ones vinyl records for the holidays? There are a handful of great reasons to do so. These reasons include selection, physicality, the experience, community and self-expression.

Because of the recent popularity, many more artists are putting their music on vinyl than they have in the last 25 years. Young music fans just being introduced to new formats can find the latest album from Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, Taylor Swift or Ed Sheeran on vinyl. Bands from the 1990s and early 2000s, Like No Doubt, the Beastie Boys and Pearl Jam are reissuing their albums and releasing them on vinyl for the first time. That makes this a great time to introduce generations that didn’t grow up with vinyl to the medium.

There is also a certain satisfaction in holding an album physically in your hands that you don’t get when you purchase a download. It’s hard to get attached to a digital file, something you cannot hold or see, and completely eliminates the need for album art. With vinyl records, the art is right there, a prominent part of the experience and something you can be proud to own. You can pass down a record from person to person, whereas a digital file you cannot.

Related is the experience you have when you play a vinyl record. Listening to a record is an active form of entertainment. Most people don’t simply put it on in the background and go into another room. You need to put down the tone arm to play it and flip the record when side A is done. It keeps you involved in the playing process. By giving someone a vinyl record, you are just as much giving them an experience as you are a gift.

Music is extension of one’s own individuality and vinyl records are a good way of addressing a loved one’s individual taste. It’s definitely a more personal gift than just getting someone a gift card to download music. If you get something from an artist that they like, it shows that you’ve taken the time to get to know them and put some thought into a gift. Even a gift card for their record shop shows that you at least know where they like to purchase their music.

There are many reasons why vinyl records make great gifts. Between the experience of holding and listening to vinyl, the individuality that it compliments and the growing selection of titles being pressed, it’s no wonder they have grown in popularity so much over the last 25 years.  If you’re still wondering what to get the music lover in your life, why not consider getting them the gift of vinyl this holiday season.

Week in Review: New Songs / Music Videos You Need to Check Out (December 10-16, 2017)

With the holidays just around the corner, people’s time becomes limited. Between work, getting ready for family get-togethers and shopping for the perfect presents, people’s schedules get chaotic and leave little time for staying up-to-date on the latest music. That’s why the weekend is the perfect time to take a break and look back at some of the best new songs and music videos of the last week.

A lot of new music was released this week. We got yet another version of Ed Sheeran’s “Perfect,” as well as a new song from Eminem’s just released ‘Revival’ album (which also features Sheeran). Stone Temple Pilots released their first single with their new lead singer. Pop punk bands Waterparks, Story of the Year and Tonight Alive all put out strong music videos. Moby released the first single from his just announced new album. We also got some great new indie-rock tracks from Phoebe Bridgers, Walter Martin (The Walkmen), Sylvan Esso and MGMT.

Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, is here to help. We’ve compiled a list of some of our favorite songs and music videos that were released over the last week. Here are seven tracks we know you will enjoy.

1.       Waterparks, “Lucky People”: Pop-punk band Waterparks goes acoustic with their latest single, “Lucky People.” It’s an optimistic and sweet love song that is easily hummable, even though at times the lyrics are a little stalker-ish. (video)

2.       Story of the Year, “Bang Bang”: Story of the Year has finally released a video for their single “Bang Bang” and it is creepy. It revolves around lead singer Dan Marsala being chased around the forest by people dressed as wolves, only to shoot himself before they can catch him. The song’s strong melody is a good soundtrack to the chase, and as the song grows into chaos, the situation in the video escalates until the song ends and you find Marsala on the ground, the same way the video starts. (video)

3.       Phoebe Bridgers, “Would You Rather”: “Would You Rather” is a slow acoustic piece that gives off both folky and country vibes. Bridgers’ voice moves easily when the song’s tone escalates. But what really makes this song for me is the acoustic punk glumness that Conor Oberst’s cameo during the chorus. (video)

4.       Moby, “Like A Motherless Child”: What is most intriguing about “Like A Motherless Child” is how much the voice of the song takes on that of a motherless child. Moby’s lyrics, and moreover the way he delivers them, make him sound lost and like no one understands him. The video dwarfs him too, using camera angles that make him seem childlike in stature. (video)

5.       MGMT, “When We Die”: MGMT released a second single from their upcoming album, ‘Little Dark Age.’ “When We Die” is much more rooted in rock and traditional instruments than a lot of the duo’s previous, more electronic fare, although it has some of those elements as well. The song’s sixties rock vibe follows a pretty consistent pace until the end where it starts to break down into a bit of distortion. The video is also on the psychedelic side, with the parts following the protagonist’s death layered over with hallucination-like drawings. (video)

6.       Tonight Alive, “Crack My Heart”: “Crack My Heart” mixes the dramatics of an Evanescence song with the swagger of No Doubt-era Gwen Stefani to create a memorable and engrossing hardcore pop-punk track. Frontwoman Jenna McDougall sings passionately as the music rages around her. (video)

7.       Stone Temple Pilots, “Meadow”: Stone Temple Pilots have officially released the first single featuring their new lead singer, Jeff Gutt. “Meadow” adds a sixties psychedelic vibe to the band’s classic alternative/grunge sound. Gutt’s voice works well within that sound, steering it in a new direction. (video)

These are some of our favorite new songs and music videos released over the last week. Take a break from the holiday madness by checking these out and relaxing with the best in new music.

Rock Shows to Check Out in New York and New Jersey This Weekend (December 15-17, 2017)

The weekend is fast approaching. If you haven’t been bombarded with all the holiday party requests yet and are still looking for something to do, why not check out a live show.

There are a lot of options in New York and New Jersey when it comes to live music this weekend, especially when it comes to rock shows. Yo La Tengo and LCD Soundsystem are both in the middle of giant residencies. WFUV, 94.3 The Shark, Taking Back Sunday, The Starting Line and The Front Bottoms all have their holiday shows this weekend.

With so many great options out there, it could be hard to choose who to see. That’s why Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, has compiled this list of rock shows happening in the New York and New Jersey area this weekend. Here are eight that we think will be worth checking out.

1.       Yo La Tengo: Yo La Tengo are right in the middle of their annual eight-night run of Hanukkah shows. This is the first time the band has been able to put a residency together, which makes these shows extra special. The band had some spectacular guests so far for the first three nights, including Nick Lowe, comedian Bob Odenkirk (night one), Los Straitjackets, John Doe and comedian Neil Hamburger (night two), The Sadies and filmmaker Jim Jarmusch (night three). Guests for the next five nights are still unknown. Saturday and Sunday are sold out, but you can still snag tickets for tonight, Monday and Tuesday. (Friday-Tuesday, Bowery Ballroom)

2.       LCD Soundsystem: Fresh off the release of their latest album, the well-received ‘American Dream,’ LCD Soundsystem have set up shop at Brooklyn Steel for a 10 show residency that started Monday night and will last through next week. This run will bring their total of Brooklyn Steel shows for the year up to 22. Unfortunately, all shows are listed as sold out at this point. (Friday, Sunday-Tuesday, Thursday-Saturday, Brooklyn Steel)

3.       Holiday Cheer for FUV: WFUV will be hosting their annual Holiday Cheer benefit show tonight. Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy, Aimee Mann, Randy Newman and Lo Moon are set to perform. Proceeds from the show go to keeping the listener-supported station afloat. (Friday, Beacon Theatre)

4.       Taking Back Sunday: If you feel like heading to New Jersey, Long Island’s Taking Back Sunday will be holding their annual holiday shows this weekend. Friday’s openers include The Dear Hunter and Diet Cig, while Saturday’s openers include The Maine and Modern Chemistry. There will also be a charity pop-up shop on Saturday afternoon where people who purchase a pass can take a photo with Santa and  see an acoustic show by TBS. All proceeds from that will go towards fighting cancer. (Friday & Saturday, Starland Ballroom)

5.       The Front Bottoms: New Jersey pop-punk band The Front Bottoms will be holding their annual Champagne Jam at Asbury Park’s Convention Hall this weekend. With 10 bands and two stages, this will be like a mini year-end festival. Besides The Front Bottoms, bands include AJJ, The Districts, White Reaper, American Trappist, Delicate Steve, Slaughter Beach Dog, The Big Easy, Weakened Friends and Strange Eclipse. (Saturday, Convention Hall)

6.       Blood Sweat & Tears: Blood Sweat & Tears celebrated its 50th anniversary this year. Known for their incorporation of jazz, blues and classical in their rock, the band has a sound all their own with a massive stage presence. ‘American Idol’ alum Bo Bice is currently fronting the band. (Saturday, The Paramount Huntington; Sunday, B.B. King Blues Club)

7.       Sponge: Best known for their single “Plowed,” rock band Sponge will be headlining 94.3 The Shark’s final Ho Ho Ho Fest show at Long Island’s newest venue, Stereo Garden. Sponge puts on an aggressive show and frontman Vinnie Dombroski acts like a mad man on stage, so you won’t want to miss it. (Saturday, Stereo Garden)

8.       The Starting Line: For what the band calls the “first time in a while, “Emo” band The Starting Line will be playing their holiday show in New York this weekend. Having reunited in 2013, the band released their first studio album in nine years, ‘Anyways,’ in 2016. Opening the sold out show will be Prince Daddy & The Hyena. (Sunday, Irving Plaza)

These are some of the hottest rock shows happening in New York and New Jersey this weekend. Check out these or any of the other amazing shows happening in the area and rock out into the holidays.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2018: A Closer Look at the New Class of Inductees

Today (December 13), the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame announced their 2018 class of inductees. The new class includes rock bands Dire Straits, The Moody Blues, Bon Jovi and The Cars, as well as legendary jazz vocalist Nina Simone and gospel singer Sister Rosetta Tharpe. These artists will be inducted in a ceremony at Cleveland’s Public Auditorium on April 14 with a broadcast set to air on HBO and SiriusXM at a later date.

The six inductees were narrowed down from a list of 19 nominees that also included Kate Bush, Depeche Mode, Judas Priest, LL Cool J, Radiohead, Rage Against the Machine, the Eurythmics and more. A pool of more than 900 music industry insiders voted to determine the nominees. A fan ballot made up of the five top artists from a public poll was also included in the vote. Four of those artists (Dire Straits, The Moody Blues, Bon Jovi and The Cars) are being inducted.

Inspired by the news, Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, is taking a closer look at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2018. Briefly, here is why each of these artists deserves their spot in history.

1.       Dire Straits: Dire Straits showed promise from the get go. Their 1978 debut album produced the breakout debut single “Sultans of Swing,” which remains a classic to this day. The bands lyrics are both poetic and culturally aware, while their melodies and compositions got more and more intricate as their career progressed. They’ve sold millions of albums worldwide and have spent more than 1100 collective weeks on the UK album charts.

2.       The Moody Blues: The Moody Blues are more than just a rock band. Combining classical music with psychedelic rock, they were pioneers of progressive rock. Their genre-spanning music has influenced countless bands, including Hall of Famers Yes and Genesis. The band is currently celebrating the 50th anniversary of their breakthrough album, ‘Days Of Future Passed.’

3.       Bon Jovi: Finally being inducted after eight years of eligibility, Bon Jovi is one of the most popular bands to come out of the 1980s hard rock scene. The band has managed to stay relevant for more than three decades, adapting their sound and earning more and more fans. They are one of the top touring bands ever, with their 2013 ‘Because We Can’ tour the 21st highest-grossing tour of all time. No wonder they were voted number one in the fan poll.

4.       The Cars: A little bit new wave, a little bit pop and a little bit punk, The Cars created a sound that no one has been able to duplicate. Hits like “Just What I Needed” and “Shake It Up” became radio staples that are still on rotation decades after release. Their influence is far-reaching, with bands as diverse as Nirvana, Ziggy Marley, Poison and The Strokes all covering the band at various points. Singer Ric Ocasek is even responsible for helping to create today’s rock sound, as he has produced albums by Weezer, No Doubt, Hole and more.

5.       Nina Simone: Simone is a legendary singer and activist whose career brought her right into the front lines of the Civil Rights Movement. Many of her originals focused on the struggles she and other black women face in their daily lives. Her single “To Be Young, Gifted and Black” became an anthem for the Civil Rights Movement. She was named by Billboard as one of the 100 greatest singers of all time.

6.       Sister Rosetta Tharpe: A female gospel artist who sang and accompanied herself on guitar, Tharpe paved the way for the male-dominated rock ‘n’ roll sound of the 1950s. Popular from the 1930s to the 1950s, her music transcended genre, crossing over from gospel to R&B and employing guitar techniques that were way ahead of her time.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s class of 2018 is filled with influential and iconic singers and rock bands. All of these artists deserve their place in the Hall for their pioneering sounds, classic tracks and influence on artists and fans of multiple generations.
