Live Shows in New York to Check Out This Weekend (December 1-3, 2017)

It’s the first weekend in December. With only four more weeks left until the New Year, now is a great time to get in some live music before the year ends.

There are a lot of big-name artists coming through the New York area this weekend for holiday shows, anniversary tours and more. Mariah Carey is kicking off her Christmas tour after postponing a handful of dates. Jay-Z, Morrissey and St. Vincent are all in town promoting their new albums. MXPX, Gin Blossoms and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah are here celebrating milestones in their careers.

Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, loves live music. That’s why we’ve compiled a list of some of the biggest shows coming to the New York area this weekend. Here are 10 shows that we think will be worth checking out.

1.       MXPX: Celebrating 25 years as a band, MXPX have been playing a handful of double shows in major cities. Now its New York’s turn as the band brings their left coast punk to Manhattan for two sold-out nights of chaos. (Friday & Saturday, Highline Ballroom)

2.       The Hold Steady: Catch the second half of The Hold Steady’s second annual Massive Nights residency at Brooklyn Bowl this weekend. The band will be joined by different openers each night to “celebrate the music, community and positivity that defines The Hold Steady.”  Patterson Hood and Cavetana opened Wednesday and Thursday’s shows, respectively, and The Whigs are set to open tonight. There is no word yet on who will be opening on Saturday. (Friday & Saturday, Brooklyn Bowl)

3.       Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes: New Jersey staple Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes comes back to New York this weekend. These guys really know their audience and put on a fantastic, energetic show. Long Islanders will get a chance to see the band a little closer to home later this month when the band plays The Paramount Huntington on December 10. (Saturday, B.B. King Blues Club)

4.       Mariah Carey: Having been sidelined by illness for the last few weeks, Mariah Carey makes her return to the stage Saturday to kick off her All I Want For Christmas Is You world tour. The singer will be in town for two more shows on December 4 and 5 before flying overseas. (Saturday, Beacon Theatre)

5.       Jay-Z: Jay-Z is currently on tour promoting his Grammy-nominated new album ‘4:44.’ The tour made stops at Barclays Center last week and now it’s Long Island’s turn. As he is arguably the most influential rapper in the game, this will not be a show to miss. (Saturday, Nassau Coliseum)

6.       Morrissey: There are just three more dates left on Morrissey’s month-long US tour, including a sold-out one in Manhattan this weekend. The former Smiths frontman released his highly anticipated new album, ‘Low In High School,’ last month, as well as a new video for single “Jackie’s Only Happy When She’s Up On The Stage” this week. (Saturday, Theater at Madison Square Garden)

7.       St. Vincent: St. Vincent is bringing her Fear the Future Tour to Brooklyn for two sold-out nights this weekend. The singer released her fifth album, ‘Masseduction,’ in October to acclaim amongst both critics and music fans. (Saturday & Sunday, Kings Theatre)

8.       Gin Blossoms: It has been 25 years since alt-rock band Gin Blossoms released their breakout album ‘New Miserable Experience,’ giving us hits like “Hey Jealousy,” “Found Out About You,” “Allison Road.” Now the band is taking the album on an anniversary tour, playing it in its entirety at each stop. (Sunday, Irving Plaza)

9.       Rachel Platten: Hitting it big with her breakout single “Fight Song” in 2015, Rachel Platten is back with a new album, ‘Waves,’ released in August. The singer will be playing her second-to-last show of the year this Sunday right here on Long Island. (Sunday, Paramount Huntington)

10.   Clap Your Hands Say Yeah: Clap Your Hands Say Yeah are celebrating the 10th anniversary of their sophomore album, ‘Some Loud Thunder,’ this year. The band kicked things off with a  a remastered reissue of the album that came out November 24, and are now on tour playing the album in its entirety. Their short run of east coast dates ends this weekend with a show in Manhattan, their last of 2017. (Sunday, Bowery Ballroom)
