Week In Review: New Songs / Music Videos You Need to Check Out (June 23-29, 2019)

A lot of new music gets released over any given week. This week was no different, as we saw a wealth of new songs and music videos hit the internet over the past seven days, especially when it came to rock and pop.

Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, loves new music. That’s why we’ve once again searched the internet for the best new songs and music videos of the past week. Here are seven (and a handful more) that we think are worth checking out.

1.       Fitz and the Tantrums, “All The Feels”: “All The Feels,” the first single from the band’s upcoming album of the same name, is a catchy, feel good track. The song builds off of a slow, finger-snapping groove, the melody hugging the beat and growing more and more joyous as the track progresses. (video)

2.       Sabrina Carpenter, “In My Bed”: One of her more funky pop songs, Sabrina Carpenter’s latest single “In My Bed” has an infectious dance club vibe. The song’s prominent beat takes over at the chorus, becoming its backbone as the lyrics and melody wrap around it. It’s also very catchy and will get stuck in your head. (video)

3.       Finneas, “I Lost A Friend”: Sometimes you don’t need a lot of instrumentation to create emotion. Finneas’ latest track “I Lost A Friend” is a vocal-driven track about losing someone you care about. Accompanied mainly by piano and a little bit of synth, Finneas’ vocals rise and fall with the song’s intense emotions, giving it a personal, honest and passionate feel. (video)

4.       Sigrid, “Mine Right Now”: “Mine Right Now” has a big, joyous melody that just makes you smile when you hear it. The lyrics take the stance that living in the present, regardless of what may happen later, is important. She’s happy because she has her significant other right now. That kind of delight really shines through in the lyrics and melody. Also, whether it’s meant to be or not, the video is pretty funny. (video)

5.       Neck Deep, “She’s A God”: Part Vertical Horizon’s “You’re A God,” part The Starting Line, Neck Deep’s “She’s A God” is a pop-punk power track. The song’s upbeat melody and passionate vocals paint a brilliant picture of how the singer feels about his girl. (video)

6.       Liam Gallagher, “The River”: With its fuzzed-out guitars, plodding bass and airy vocals, Liam Gallagher’s “The River” has that classic Brit-pop sound that wouldn’t seem out of place on an Oasis album back in the day. Written to rally the listener into taking action against injustices, the song doesn’t get so overly political that it takes away from the overall experience. (video)

7.       Sub-Radio, “Dreamcatcher”: “Dreamcatcher” is that quintessential low key track most pop-punk albums have and Sub-Radio does it well. The melody is sweet, the beat is easy and it makes you want to vibe along. (video)

Further Listening:
·         Redd Kross, “What’s A Boy To Do”: (video)
·         The Soft Cavalry, “Never Be Without You”: (video)
·         Slaughter Beach, Dog, “Heart Attack”: (video)
·         The Black Keys, “Sit Around And Miss You” and “Fire Walk With Me”: (Sit / Fire)
·         Korn, “You’ll Never Find Me”: (video)
·         Ed Sheeran, “Beautiful People”: (video)

This week saw the release of a lot of great new songs and music videos in the rock and pop genres. Check out some of our favorites above, and then let us know what new tracks you’ve been digging this week in the comments below.

Artists with Long Gaps Between Albums

On Tuesday (6/25) country trio the Dixie Chicks announced that they were in the studio working on a new album. The album, once released, will be their first in nearly 13 years, following 2006’s ‘Taking the Long Way.’

The Dixie Chicks join a recent influx of bands and artists that have returned with new music after more than a decade away, including My Bloody Valentine, Chic, Chuck Berry and more.

Inspired by the news of the Dixie Chicks’ as-yet untitled album, Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, is taking a look at artists that took their time between albums. Here are six whose new albums were long-awaited.

1.       Pink Floyd: Pink Floyd had pretty much disbanded following touring for their 1994 album ‘The Division Bell.’ In 2012, however, frontman David Gilmour and drummer Nick Mason decided to take another look at some of the unreleased instrumentals left over from the ‘Division Bell’ sessions. What came of it was a nearly all-instrumental new album, ‘The Endless River,’ released in 2014, 20 years after their last.

2.       My Bloody Valentine: Things started to fall apart for My Bloody Valentine in the mid-1990s. Despite being signed to Island Records in 1992, the bands members started moving in their own separate directions in 1995, leaving their 1991 album, ‘Loveless,’ as their final album. Although the band reunited in 2007, it would be another nine years before they would release their third album, ‘m b v,’ in 2013. The band is supposedly writing two more albums, though there is no timeline yet for their release.

3.       Chic: Following the reunion that brought about their 1992 album ‘Chic-ism,’ Chic continued to tour for the next two decades as a nostalgia act. The band released four albums, but they were all either compilations or live recordings. Nile Rodgers announced in 2013 that he was working on a new Chic album, ‘It’s About Time,’ which came out six years later in 2018.

4.       The Who: The Who may be releasing a new album some time in 2019, closing a 13-year gap between albums, but it’s not the longest the band has taken. Following the release of ‘It’s Hard’ in 1982 and a farewell tour the same year, Pete Townshend decided to leave the band. The break-up didn’t last long though, as the band reunited at Live Aid in 1985 and toured together in various line-ups ever since. Despite John Entwistle’s passing in 2002, Townshend and Roger Daltrey decided to release a new album in 2006, ‘Endless Wire,’ 24 years after the last.

5.       Guns N’ Roses: One of the most storied waits in rock music, it took Guns N’ Roses 15 years to follow up their 1993 album ‘“The Spaghetti Incident?”,’ (17 years if you’re only counting original compositions, making the ‘Use Your Illusion’ albums their last). Slash and Duff McKagan left the band between 1996 and 1997, leaving Axl Rose as the only original member. Rose spent a lot of time recording and rerecording what would become ‘Chinese Democracy,’ delaying what was supposed to be a 2000 release into a 2008 release. With the band’s supposed upcoming album, they will be bridging another long gap, 11 years since an official album release and 26 years since their classic line-up released an album.

6.       Chuck Berry: Though he had not released an album since ‘Rockit’ in 1979, Chuck Berry continued to perform live for much of his career. That changed in 2017 with the release of ‘Chuck,’ his first studio album in 38 years. Berry had been working on the album for a long time and seemed to know that it would be his final, saying in a statement “This record is dedicated to my beloved [wife] Toddy. My darlin' I'm growing old! I've worked on this record for a long time. Now I can hang up my shoes!” The legendary musician passed away a couple of months prior to its release.

Whether it was because of a recent reunion or an artist taking their time, there have been several artists over the last few years who have released new albums after decades of radio silence. The Dixie Chicks join this growing list, hopefully recapturing what made their music great more than a decade later.

Week In Review: New Songs / Music Videos You Need to Check Out (June 16-22, 2019)

A lot of new music is released over the course of any given week. This week was no exception, as we saw a wealth of new songs and music videos hit the internet, including hot new pop and rock tracks from the likes of Taylor Swift, Blink-182, Sum 41 and more.

Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, loves new music. That’s why we’ve once again scoured the internet for the best new songs and music videos of the week. Here are five (and a few more) of our favorites that are worth checking out.

1.       Sum 41, “Never There”: Sum 41 has dabbled in sentimental before, but never like they do in their latest single “Never There.” Written by frontman Deryck Whibley about his father (who he never met) and dedicated to single mothers such as his own, the song’s confessional lyrics are guided by a heartfelt piano and acoustic guitar-driven melody. (video)

2.       Off With Their Heads, “Disappear”: “Disappear” follows an arched narrative in its lyrics and melody. Starting out with a slow strummed guitars and reflective lyrics, the song quickly picks up pace into a full punk tune with heavy guitars and throaty vocals opining about his inner struggles before ending the same way it started but with more clarity. The guitar solo and melody are relatively catchy and will keep you invested throughout the song. (video)

3.       Taylor Swift, “You Need To Calm Down”: Like “Me!,” “You Need To Calm Down” is an extremely perky pop song with an even more colorful video. While I’m not a fan of some of the very slang-y lyrics, I very much respect the song’s message of inclusivity. Speaking explicitly to those who spread hate, she very clearly tells them to leave everyone alone to be who they want to be. To be honest, I enjoyed the over-the-top, cameo-filled video more than the song, especially her scene where she makes up with Katy Perry. (video)

4.       Blink-182, “Generational Divide”: The second shortest Blink-182 song ever (their 30-second track “Family Reunion” for the ‘Short Music For Short People’ comp is both NSFW and hilarious), “Generational Divide” finds the band trying to recapture their glory days. It’s a high-energy, short, fast and loud punk song that’s perhaps even more aggressive than even their early music. The only thing that took me out of it a bit was that it seems like Matt Skiba is trying to sound like Tom DeLonge. (video)

5.       Metronomy, “Salted Caramel Ice Cream”: “Salted Caramel Ice Cream’s” simple, percussion/synth-driven melody is bright and memorable, making you want to get up and dance. The video is also very adorable, playing off the ice cream theme by having the band members man rival dessert stands. (video)

Further Listening:
·         The Hold Steady, “Denver Haircut”: (video)
·         Violent Femmes, “Another Chorus”: (video)
·         Juliet Simms, “Bad Love”: (video)
·         Set It Off, “Hourglass”: (video)

From top pop jams to hard rocking punk and rock tracks, this week saw the release of a lot of great new songs and music videos. Check out some of our favorites above and let us know what tracks you’ve been digging this week in the comments below.

Six More Classic Summer Songs to Get You Ready for the Solstice

The summer solstice is this Friday (June 21). As the first official day of summer (and longest day of the year), the solstice kicks off a season associated with fun in the sun and good times. What better way to get yourself ready than with the perfect summer playlist?

Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, has previously brought you lists of some of our favorite summer and heat wave songs. Now we’re back with even more summer classics to get your playlists ready for the summer heat. Here are six classic tracks to kick your summer into high gear.

1.       Mungo Jerry, “In The Summertime”: “In The Summertime” is a classic summer song. The 1970 track has a quaint, sundrenched feel to it that transports you to a porch in the middle of a summer day sitting in the sun, drinking soda and listening to the radio. (video)

2.       Bryan Adams, “Summer of ‘69”: Who doesn’t want to sit back and reminisce about the good times on a hot summer day? Bryan Adams’ classic Americana rock anthem “Summer of ‘69” does just that. Adams’ lyrics look back fondly at a past summer fling as he and his band rip through the wistful tune with powerful and bravado. (video)

3.       LFO, “Summer Girls”: “Summer Girls” was a career-defining track for LFO back in 1999 and has been a perennial summer favorite since. The song’s nonsensical lyrics and playful rap-sung style are ear-catching and the simple rhythm makes you want to get up, dance and sing along. (video)

4.       Sheryl Crow, “Soak Up The Sun”: A country-tinged pop tune about putting your worries aside and having fun, “Soak Up The Sun” is full of sundrenched vocal harmonies and zest for life. The summer is all about kicking back and enjoying the nice weather, and this is the perfect companion song for doing so. (video)

5.       The Go-Go’s, “Vacation”: On the surface, “Vacation” is a perky ode to getting away from the humdrum-ness of everyday life. But underneath the bouncy melody and 80s synths, the song is really about taking that time away to realize that you can’t live without someone. Distance makes the heart grow fonder, as the saying goes. (video)

6.       Seals & Crofts, “Summer Breeze”: As cool and refreshing as a “summer breeze,” Seals & Crofts’ 1972 hit “Summer Breeze” congers up vibes of relaxing outside in the cool evening air by the water.  (video)

With the summer solstice officially ushering in the start of summer this week, now is a great time to compile your perfect seasonal playlist. If you’re looking for inspiration, check out some classic summer tracks above. Then, let us know what your favorite summer songs are in the comments below.

Week In Review: New Songs / Music Videos You Need to Check Out (June 9-15, 2019)

Over the course of any given week a lot of new music gets released. This week was no different as we saw new songs and music videos from some of today’s top artists and more hit the internet.

Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, loves new music. That’s why we’ve once again scoured the internet for the best new songs and music videos of the week. Here are six (and a handful more) of our favorites that we think are worth a listen.

1.       Charly Bliss, “Young Enough”: The title track off Charly Bliss’ recently released sophomore album, “Young Enough” mixes Eva Grace Hendricks’ ethereal vocals with an at times chaotic and frenzied power-pop melody that soars. (video)

2.       The Avett Brothers, “High Steppin’”: “High Steppin’” is an alt-country rocker that makes you both want to get up and dance and contemplate life. Starting out with a picked bass intro and line-dance worthy melody, the song breaks down in the middle with a thought-provoking sociopolitical monologue. Now more informed, the song heads back to the main melody, now even more enthusiastic than before. (video)

3.       Machine Gun Kelly, Yungblud & Travis Barker, “I Think I’m Okay”: “I Think I’m Okay” grows on you after a couple of listens. The song takes Machine Gun Kelly’s punk-leaning rap and Yungblud’s malleable vocals and puts them against Travis Barker’s inimitable drumming to create a catchy rock banger. (video)

4.       Marshmello feat. A Day To Remember, “Rescue Me”: Marshmello has been unstoppable lately and now he’s ventured into the hard rock realm. “Rescue Me,” his collaboration with A Day To Remember is the perfect combination of both artists’ sounds. While there are electronic breakdowns, they compliment the rock instrumentals instead of warping them beyond recognition. (video)

5.       Badflower, “Promise Me”: “Promise Me” is an emotional rollercoaster of a song. Its lyrics tell a story of love, loss and growing up, delivered with such passion that you really feel for the song’s protagonist. The punk-leaning pop-rock melody intensifies and relaxes as the lyrical phrasing dictates. The video is just as intense, bringing the song’s story and lyrics to life. (video)

6.       Sum 41, “A Death In The Family”: Sum 41 doesn’t miss a beat on their fast-paced new single “A Death In The Family,” the latest from their upcoming seventh studio album ‘Order In Decline.’ Going between aggressive, “in your face” chords and broken-down choruses, the song is a call to action and warning to those in power that change is coming. I also love how the video contrasts what punk and ska looked like 50 years ago verses today. (video)

Further Listening:
·         Shinedown, “Monsters”: (video)
·         Bruce Springsteen, “Western Stars”: (video)
·         Telethon, “Wanderparty”: (video)
·         Hiss Golden Messenger, “I Need A Teacher”: (video)
·         Sleater-Kinney, “The Future Is Here”: (video)
·         Volbeat, “Last Day Under The Sun”: (video)
·         Jesse Malin feat. Billie Joe Armstrong, “Strangers & Thieves”: (video)

From the alt-country sounds of The Avett Brothers to the hard-rocking informed punk of Sum 41 and everything in between, there were lot of great new rock songs and music videos released over the past week. Check out some of our favorites above and let us know what new tracks you’ve been digging this week in the comments below.

Artists with Their Own Podcasts

Podcasting has been around for a while now, though it has been gaining new ground over the past couple of years. New shows dealing with every conceivable topic have been popping up on what seems like almost every day. Much like early radio-era scripted shows, podcasts have been able to peak people’s interests and capture their imaginations with both informative and entertaining content. Musicians are getting in on the act too, creating their own shows to either promote the music they love or to talk about their own music and career stories.

With podcasting becoming so popular, Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, is taking a look at artists who have chosen to dabble in the field. Here are seven who have or have had their own shows.

1.       Questlove, ‘Questlove Supreme’: Best known as the drummer for hip-hop band The Roots, Questlove has proven himself on multiple occasions to be an international man of music. In 2016, he created the ‘Questlove Supreme’ podcast with music service Pandora, on which he conducted interviews with artists and “geek out” about music. According to a New York Times article, he would go through roughly 200 songs before recording each weekly episode.

2.       Chuck D, ‘Stay Free: The Story of The Clash’: In February of 2019, Spotify launched an eight-episode podcast about legendary British punk band The Clash. To host, the company landed another legend, Public Enemy-frontman Chuck D. If this sounds like a weird pairing, the podcast makes sure to establish the parallels between the band and Chuck D’s careers, adding a “surprising new dimension to the story of The Clash.”

3.       Aimee Mann & Ted Leo, ‘The Art Of The Process’: Announced in January 2019 and premiered on the Maximum Fun podcast network the same month, musicians Aimee Mann and Ted Leo’s ‘The Art Of The Process’ podcast discusses not only music, but creativity in all its forms. According to a Twitter post by Leo, “We talk to a broad array of ppl from many backgrounds and many regions of the creative spectrum about how, in these times, they remain creative while navigating the labyrinth of abandon, depression, elation, inspiration, and most importantly for us, work, structures, process.” Past guests on the monthly podcast include singer/songwriter Dan Wilson (Semisonic), comedian Wyatt Cenac and most recently television critic Emily Nussbaum.

4.       Ozzy Osbourne, ‘The Osbournes Podcast’: Back in 2002 when reality television was coming into its own, MTV premiered a show looking at the lives of Black Sabbath frontman and successful solo artist Ozzy Osbourne and his family called ‘The Osbournes.’ In 2018, the Osbourne family decided to look back on the four-season series with a 10 episode podcast.

5.       Rick Rubin, ‘Broken Record’: One of the most storied and in demand producers in music, Rick Rubin has teamed up with writer Malcolm Gladwell and New York Times editor Bruce Headlam for a podcast about the songwriting process. ‘Broken Record’ features Rubin talking with guests about their craft in an effort to “restart” the conversation between artist and listener “for a world without liner notes.”

6.       Robert Plant, ‘Digging Deep’: The most recent addition to the musicians starting podcasts club is Led Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant, whose ‘Digging Deep’ launched its first episode on June 2. The show features Plant discussing his five decade music career and the “moments, people and places that have inspired some of [his] most treasured music.”

7.       Henry Rollins, ‘Henry & Heidi Podcast’: Henry Rollins has led a pretty storied career in the music industry as frontman for Black Flag and the Rollins Band, solo artist and motivational speaker, all of which he has been discussing sporadically on his podcast, the ‘Henry & Heidi Podcast,’ since 2015.  Along with his manager Heidi May, Rollins tells stories about his career in hopes that “listeners have some fun listening to it.”

More and more people have been jumping on the podcasting bandwagon lately, including musicians. There are many artists like the ones above out there using the format to discuss their careers or explore other artists’ creative pursuits. As podcasting continues to pick up steam, it wouldn’t be surprising if even more artists develop their own shows.

Week In Review: New Songs / Music Videos You Need to Check Out (6/2-6/8/2019)

A lot of new music comes out over the course of any given week and this one was no exception. This week saw a wealth of new songs and music videos hit the internet, including tracks from the likes of Madonna, the Black Eyed Peas, Liam Gallagher, Keane, Bon Iver and more.

Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, loves new music. That’s why we’ve once again scoured the internet for this week’s hottest new songs and music videos. Here are six (and a few more) of our favorite new tracks that we think are worth checking out.

1.       Joey Cape, “The Love Of My Life”: The second single off Lagwagon frontman Joey Cape’s upcoming solo album ‘Let Me Know When You Give Up,’ “The Love Of My Life” is a sweet, melody-fueled track that again goes beyond just his usual vocal and acoustic guitar approach to solo music. Its style is slow yet upbeat with Cape’s well-crafted lyrics and husky vocal sincerity on full display. (video)

2.       Muna, “Number One Fan”: “Number One Fan” is an upbeat synth-pop jam about being your own biggest fan. Its air-y synths and bouncing, danceable beat feel both retro and current, and will have you out of your seat and dancing by mid-track. (video)

3.       Black Eyed Peas feat. Snoop Dogg, “Be Nice”: It’s such an overly simple, borderline cheesy song, but “Be Nice” kind of grows on you after a while. Will.I.Am, Apl.de.ap and guest Snoop Dogg (Taboo doesn’t play much of a role in the vocals) are purveyors of the golden rule in this old school rap with a light, easy island vibe. (video)

4.       Sub-Radio, “Room For You”: “Room For You” is a fun, pop-y, synth-tinged rock track that will make you jump up and dance. From its dreamy verses to its big, joyous chorus and over-the-moon finale, the song is a wild ride that demands your attention. (video)

5.       Liam Gallagher, “Showckwave”: Oasis’ Liam Gallagher is back with the first single from his upcoming second solo album ‘Why Me? Why Not.’ “Shockwave” is a guitar-heavy rocker with a grime-y feel and 1990s garage rock/Brit-pop vibes. (video)

6.       Keane, “The Way I Feel”: “The Way I Feel” is an energized piece of pop-rock with a big melody that seems to contradict its conflicted subject matter. Tim Rice-Oxley’s lyrics reach to find meaning, trying to make sense of something lost, while the melody swirls, evolving into this big sound that together are both pop-y and urgent. (video)

Further Listening:
·         Strung Out, “Daggers”: (video)
·         !!!, “UR Paranoid”: (video)
·         The Soft Cavalry, “Bulletproof”: (video)
·         Bad Books, “UFO”: (video)
·         Ramona, “Are We Having Fun Yet?”: (video)
·         Pixies, “On Graveyard Hill”: (video)
·         Bon Iver, “Hey, Ma”: (video)

This week saw the release of a lot of great new songs and music videos, especially when it came to pop and rock. Enjoy some of our favorites in the list above, then let us know what new songs you’ve been digging in the comments below.

Albums Coming Out June 2019

June is here and so is the summer new release season. There are a lot of highly anticipated albums coming out this month, including projects from the likes of Avicii, the Jonas Brothers, Madonna, The Raconteurs and The Black Keys.

With the first New Music Friday of the month coming up this week, Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, is taking a look at some of the biggest albums and best bets set to hit shelves in the month of June. Here are seven albums (and a few more picks) we think will be worth keeping an eye out for this month.

1.       Avicii, ‘Tim’: Just over a year after electronic music producer Avicii’s (nee Tim Bergling) untimely death, his posthumous third album, ‘Tim,’ is being released. Work on the album had started before his passing with some of his collaborators pitching in to help finish it. Proceeds from the album’s sales will go to the Tim Bergling Foundation, which helps “treat mental illness and prevent suicide.” (6/6)

2.       Jonas Brothers, ‘Happiness Begins’: After six years of leading separate lives and prosperous solo careers, the Jonas Brothers have reunited and are releasing a new album to make it official. The band of brothers has already released two highly successful comeback singles, with the sleek and catchy “Sucker” debuting at number one on the Billboard charts. The release also coincides with the premiere of their new Amazon Prime documentary, ‘Chasing Happiness.’(6/7)

3.       Perry Farrell, ‘Kind Heaven’: Jane’s Addiction frontman Perry Farrell releases his first solo album in 18 years, ‘Kind Heaven,’ this Friday. Based on his Las Vegas destination venture of the same name, the album was produced by Tony Visconti (David Bowie) and features collaborations with Dhani Harrison, Foo Fighters’ Taylor Hawkins, The Cars’ Elliot Easton, Tommy Lee and more. (6/7)

4.       Madonna, ‘Madame X’: Madonna has been releasing music consistently throughout the last four decades, somehow molding herself to fit into the popular music of the era. Her upcoming 14th studio effort, ‘Madame X,’ finds her doing the same. It’s almost uncanny how much singles “Medellin,” “I Rise” and “Crave” find the “Queen of Pop” sounding like all the other female singers that are popular right now. (6/14)

5.       Noah Kahan, ‘Busyhead’: This month he finally releases his debut album, ‘Busyhead.’ The culmination of years of slowly building up a fanbase with his folk rock sound, singer-songwriter Noah Kahan releases his debut album, ‘Busyhead,’ this month. Tunes like “Young Blood,” “Hurt Somebody,” “False Confidence” and “Mess” are catchy and honest, giving me high hopes that the album will be one not to miss. (6/14)

6.       The Raconteurs, ‘Help Us Stranger’: The Raconteurs return this month after a more than 11 year hiatus with their third studio album, ‘Help Us Stranger.’ Featuring singles “Sunday Driver” and “Now That You’re Gone,” which were originally released as part of the tenth anniversary rerelease of ‘Consolers of the Lonely,’ the album continues the band’s mission to “push rock n’ roll forward into its future” through “prodigious riffs, blues power, sinewy psychedelia, Detroit funk, and Nashville soul.” (6/21)

7.       The Black Keys, “Let’s Rock”: The Black Keys return after five years this month with their ninth studio album, “Let’s Rock” (stylized with the quotation marks). Self-produced by the duo of Pat Carney and Dan Auerbach, the album is said to harken back to the band’s more rock-influenced roots. Featuring no keyboards on it whatsoever, Carney told Pitchfork that the album more of “an homage to electric guitar.” (6/28)

More Album Picks:

Week In Review: New Songs / Music Videos You Need to Check Out (May 26-June 1, 2019)

A lot of new music comes out over the course of any given week and this one was no exception. The last seven days saw some great new songs and music videos make their way to the internet, especially when it came to pop and rock, as we got some brand new music from the likes of Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, Bruce Springsteen and Sleater-Kinney, to name but a few.

Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, loves new music. That’s why we’ve once again scoured the internet to bring you some of the hottest new songs and music videos of the past week. Here are seven of our favorites that we think are worth checking out.

1.       Lauv, “Sad Forever”: “Sad Forever” is a sincere track about wanting to find inner peace when all you feel is hopelessness. The song’s minimalist sound really puts Lauv’s falsetto front and center, using just a simple beat and light instrumentals to support the vocal melody. (video)

2.       Bruce Springsteen, “Tucson Train”: “Tucson Train” is classic Springsteen. The Boss’ excellent storytelling shines on this Americana-tinged track about a working man and his love. The instrumentation is also well done, from the violin kicking off the melody at the beginning to the small detail of how the guitar strumming at the end sounds like a train leaving the station. (video)

3.       Sleater-Kinney, “Hurry On Home”: Sleater-Kinney’s first new song in four years, the St. Vincent-produced “Hurry On Home” is a fast-paced, upbeat garage-rock-y punk track that makes you long for the 90s riot grrl era. Corin Tucker’s vocals are full of attitude and immediacy, accompanied by an instrumental melody that delivers on that late 1980s-early 1990s electronic, fuzzed out feel. (video)

4.       Mayday Parade, “Looks Red, Tastes Blue”: “Looks Red, Tastes Blue” harkens back to the band’s days of incongruous song titles and melodic pop punk. It’s a downbeat, moody track with a chorus that reminds me a little of Polyphonic Spree’s “Light And Day,” only with a tighter, more guitar-oriented sound. (video)

5.       NF, “The Search”: Mental health is on the tip of NL’s tongue in “The Search,” giving listeners an explanatory view of what goes on in his head. What caught my attention though was the way he spits out rhymes with the same voracity as Eminem and the introspective self-analytical lyrics of Logic. There are a lot of people writing this way right now, but not everyone does it so eloquently. (video)

6.       Katy Perry, “Never Really Over”: With its big chorus and catchy melody, Katy Perry’s new single, “Never Really Over,” is sure to be a hit for the pop singer. The sound is more cleanly pop than some of her more recent singles, providing the perfect outlet for song’s big production and Perry’s big vocals to have a moment to shine. (video)

7.       Coheed and Cambria, “The Pavilion (A Long Way Back)”: Coheed and Cambria released a video for their latest single, “The Pavilion (A Long Way Back),” off last year’s concept album, ‘The Unheavenly Creatures.’ Based around a very Tears For Fears-like guitar riff, the song is melodic and beautiful with dramatic moments peppered throughout for emphasis.
