Happy first full weekend of October! Despite all the tragedy
that has befallen the music world over the last week, there have still been a
lot of great new music and music videos to keep us busy over the last seven
days.
This past week saw new singles from a wide array of artists.
Lin-Manuel Miranda released his highly anticipated charity song for the people
of Puerto Rico. The Breeders made their return to music after nearly a decade
away. Haim and Saint Motel both released new videos for songs from their
recently released albums while St. Vincent released a new video for the second
single from her upcoming album. In pop music, Maroon 5, P!nk and star Charlie
Puth all debuted new singles from their upcoming albums. Then in rock, Weezer
got back to their rock roots with the debut of their latest single from their
new album, being released later this month.
Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, has been perusing
the internet for the latest songs and music videos. Here are seven that we
think you will enjoy.
1.
Haim,
“Little of Your Love”: “Little of Your Love” is another well-produced pop song
from the sister trio. It sounds a little like Wilson-Philips’ “Hold On,” but
with a slight country tinge. The video, like the last couple from this album
cycle, shows the sisters dancing, this time in a club with an entire group. (video)
2.
Saint Motel, “Destroyer”: “Destroyer” is an
excellent song with a memorable hook. “I don’t break hearts, I destroy them” is
a great line and the fact that it’s a male singer relaying these words from a female
character makes it even better. (video)
3.
Charlie Puth, “How Long”: If I were still a 10
year old girl, I would be falling hard for this song. “How Long” has a one-man
boy band vibe to it. The song features a great beat that the melody is shaped
around while Puth’s lyricism and soft, pop vocal are reminiscent of late
1990s-early 2000s pop songs. (video)
4.
Lin-Manuel Miranda, “Almost Like Praying”:
Lin-Manuel Miranda, creator of ‘Hamilton,’ has released a star-studded charity single
to benefit Puerto Rico after the destruction caused by Hurricane Maria.
Featuring some of the hottest artists in Latin music, including Jennifer
Lopez, Marc
Anthony, Fat
Joe, Camila Cabello, Gloria Estefan and Luis Fonsi, among others, the song
is mostly sung in Spanish with a very salsa-like melody and flow. (video)
5.
Weezer, “Weekend Woman”: Any doubt that Weezer’s
upcoming album was going to be anything less than good have now been squashed
with the release of their latest single “Weekend Woman.” The band has been
going in a very electronic direction lately and this song pulls back on that a
little. Its sound is much more like that of their last two albums, bringing an
element of newness to the original Weezer sound. (video)
6.
St. Vincent, “Los Ageless”: The second single
from St. Vincent’s upcoming album, “Los Ageless” is another great indie-pop
track from the mind of Annie Clark. Featuring the same effortless vocals she put
forward in previous single “New York,” “Los Ageless” ups the tempo a bit,
giving off the impression that perhaps the subject of the song is a bit more
urgent. Lyrically, it sounds a little like pleading with a lover who’s leaving
them. (video)
7.
The Breeders, “Wait in the Car”: The Breeders
released their first new song in nearly eight years this week. “Wait in the Car”
has all the 1990s alt-rock, punk edge the band is known for without sounding
dated. Kim Deal’s talk-sung vocals and the band’s precision playing are as crisp
as ever. (video)
These are some of our favorite new songs and music videos
that came out this week. Check these out and start your weekend off right with
new music.
