Only a few more hours until the weekend officially starts.
If you’re still wondering what to do this weekend, why not check out a live
show.
There are some big shows happening in New York this weekend.
From comedy to punk to hip-hop, there is something for everyone out there. Billy
Joel will be continuing his record Madison Square Garden residency. Legendary
50s and 60s artists like Smokey Robinson and Herman’s Hermits are hitting Long
Island. The Psychedelic Furs and Ben Folds will both be bringing their tours
through the area.
Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, loves live music.
That’s why we’ve compile a list of some of the biggest shows happening in New
York this weekend. Here are eight that we think will be worth checking out.
1.
Billy
Joel: Billy Joel continues his record-breaking run at Madison Square Garden
tonight with the 45th show in his residency. Hear all the local
native’s hits again and reminisce about the good old days. The residency has
now been extended through January. (Friday, Madison Square Garden)
2.
Propagandi: In the mood for some punk? Rocks Off
is presenting Propagandhi tonight in Brooklyn. The band is currently touring
behind their latest album, ‘Victory Lap,’ released in September. Opening the
show will be Iron Chic and Heartsounds. (Friday, Warsaw)
3.
Foxy Brown: The rapper, known a handful of top
10 hits in the 1990s, is back. She is rumored to be working on a new solo
album, which will be her first in nearly 17 years. (Friday, B.B. King Blues
Club)
4.
Ben
Folds: Ben Folds will be doing things a little differently on his current
tour. Dubbed the ‘Paper Airplane Request
Tour,’ the singer/pianist will be taking requests from the audience, who will
be writing song titles on pieces of paper and throwing them on stage as paper
planes. No two shows on this tour will ever be the same. Sounds like fun. (Saturday,
Kings Theatre)
5.
Smokey
Robinson: From his early work with The
Miracles to his massively successful solo career, Smokey Robinson has been
doling out that sweet Motown sound for more than six decades. Robinson will be
bringing some of that soul to Long Island this weekend when he makes a one-off
stop at Long Island’s Tilles Center Saturday. (Saturday, Tilles Center)
6.
Tom
Petty Tributes: Tom Petty, who passed away recently, would have been 67
today. Such is why there is a handful of Petty Tributes happening this weekend
and in the next few weeks. Cover band Refugee will be playing at Lucille’s at B.B.
King Blues Club this Saturday. Then all day on Sunday, there will be a free
tribute to the Heartbreakers frontman at Alphaville in Brooklyn featuring a
handful of artists performing one to four Petty songs a piece. If you can wait
until November 6, there will also be a tribute to Petty at Brooklyn Bowl with
members of Quicksand, Rival Schools, The Mooney Suzuki, 2 Skinny J’s, The
Bogmen and more.
7.
The Psychedelic Furs: The Psychedelic Furs may
not have released much more than a few greatest hit and live albums in the last
25 years, but that doesn’t mean they don’t still rock. The band will be pulling
out all the singles for their latest tour, which ends this weekend with two
shows in New York. (Saturday, The Paramount Huntington; Sunday, Warsaw)
8.
Kevin James: Long Island actor and comedian
Kevin James will be doing a handful of stand-up dates in New York over the next
week. James recently returned to television with his show ‘Kevin Can Wait,’ which
is currently airing its second season on CBS. (Sunday, The Paramount Huntington)
These are some of the biggest shows and live music events
happening in New York this weekend. Check out these or any of the smaller shows
happening around the area and start your weekend off right with live music.
