Albums to Watch for in October 2017

Happy October! As the leaves begin to change and people get ready for Halloween (because preparation seems to get earlier and earlier), it’s also time to get ready for the fall album release season.

There are a lot of exciting new albums heading our way this month. Marilyn Manson and Beck are both releasing long-awaited new albums. St. Vincent is taking a more personal turn with her highly anticipated new album. The Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan is returning with his first solo album in more than a decade while Oasis’ Liam Gallagher makes his solo debut. We also have new albums from Weezer, Robert Plant and P!nk to look forward to.

Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, loves new music. That’s why we’ve rounded up some of our picks for October’s top releases. Here are 11 that we think will be worth a listen.

1.       Marilyn Manson, ‘Heaven Upside Down’: There has been a lot of hype behind Marilyn Manson’s upcoming 10th album. Manson was supposed to release ‘Say10’ on Valentine’s Day, but the album’s release kept being pushed back before being cancelled entirely. After writing more songs, the updated album, now titled ‘Heaven Upside Down,’ was announced for October with two new singles being released in September. (10/6)

2.       Liam Gallagher, “As You Were”: Oasis’ Liam Gallagher is finally releasing his debut solo album. Singles like “Wall of Glass” and “Chinatown” build on the 90s Brit-pop style that made him popular in the first place, adding in some bluesy elements that add an extra layer to his sound. (10/6)
3.       Mister Heavenly. ‘Boxing the Moonlight’: Mister Heavenly are ready for their big break. A super group featuring members of Man Man, Islands and Modest Mouse, the band released their debut album six years ago and famously toured with actor/comedian Michael Cera on bass. The first single from ‘Boxing the Moonlight,’ “Beat Down,” has been getting some radio airplay lately, so this could be their time to shine. (10/6)

4.       Beck, ‘Colors’: Following his Grammy-winning ‘Morning Phase,’ Beck returns with a new, more upbeat album, ‘Colors.’ The album was supposed to come out a year ago, but was delayed. Early single “Wow” was recognized as one of the top songs of 2016 by Billboard, so perhaps this album will also be worth the listen. (10/13)

5.       Courtney Barnett & Kurt Vile, ‘Lotta Sea Lice’: Judging from the first single they released from ‘Lotta Sea Lice,’ “Over Everything,” this is going to be an interesting album. The way Barnett and Vile play off each other is great. Both are talented musicians on their own, so I have high hopes for this album. (10/13)

6.       P!nk, ‘Beautiful Trauma’: P!nk is one of those pop stars that is not afraid to speak her mind and puts out consistently good work. She proves this with ‘Beautiful Trauma’s’ first single, the emotional “What About Us,” taking on politics with a level of beauty and depth most pop artists trying to be conscious only skim the surface of. P!nk has said of the title track that it is about life being both traumatic and beautiful. With such descriptions, this could possibly be one of her best albums to date. (10/13)

7.       Robert Plant, ‘Carry Fire’: Robert Plant returns with his 11th solo album, ‘Carry Fire,’ this month, his second with the Sensational Space Shifters. This time out, Plant has gone for a bluesy-er sound, saying that “each time I feel the trawl and incentive to create new work. I must mix old with new. Consequently the whole impetus of the band has moved on its axis somewhat, the new sound and different space giving way to exciting and dramatic landscapes of mood, melody and instrumentation." (10/13)

8.       St. Vincent, ‘Masseduction’: St. Vincent released two singles from this new album, “New York” and “Los Ageless,” and both are phenomenal. Annie Clark’s vocal delivery is so effortless and nonchalant. If all the songs are like this, I would really enjoy hearing the entire album. (10/13)

9.       Billy Corgan, ‘Ogilala’: It has been 12 years since Billy Corgan, frontman for The Smashing Pumpkins, released a solo album. ‘Ogilala’ is being released under Corgan’s full name (William Patrick Corgan) and, according to an interview with Rolling Stone, is mostly acoustic. The album also boasts the first collaboration between Corgan and James Iha since Iha left The Smashing Pumpkins in 2000. (10/13)

10.   Weezer, ‘Pacific Daydream’: With summer tinged songs like “Feels Like Summer” and “Mexican Fender,” Weezer’s new album tables the band’s idea for a darker turn and heads back to the beach. According to a press release, the aesthetic for the album is supposed to be if “the Beach Boys and The Clash fell in love by the beach and had one hell of an amazing baby.” As a Weezer fan, I’m cautiously optimistic, but in the end I’ll be excited to hear what the band has up their sleeves. (10/27)

11.   The Used, ‘The Canyon’: The Used have come up with an entirely new approach to recording their upcoming seventh studio album, ‘The Canyon.’ At its core, it’s a live album recorded in a studio setting, playing “as if they were on stage.” There are also a few songs on the album that feature string sections and a choir, something you don’t hear every day on a hardcore record. (October 27)

October 2017 is looking to be a great month for new releases. These are some of our picks for albums that we think will be worth your time and money. Keep an eye out for these and let us know what albums you’re excited for in October.
