It’s the weekend once again. That means it’s time to take a
look back at some of the new rock songs and music videos that came out over the
last week that you may have missed.
A lot has happened in the world of new music this week. Lil’
Kim released a new stand alone single, while Taylor
Swift and Maroon 5 continued to promote their new albums with more singles.
Owl City returned with a feel-good new song, as did Vance Joy. However, it was the
new rock music that really stood out this week. The Used, Pop Evil, All Time
Low and Portugal. The Man all released stand-out new songs and music videos.
Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, has once again
been searching the internet for the latest new songs and music videos. Here are
nine that we’re sure will rock your socks off (figuratively, that is).
1.
Owl City, “All My Friends”: Known for his pop-y
electronic hits like “Fireflies,” Owl City is back with a new single, “All My Friends,”
from his upcoming new album, ‘Cinematic.’ “All My Friends” is a feel-good acoustic-ish
jam that wouldn’t seem out of place on a One Republic album. The crowd vocals
that give off the vibe of sitting around a campfire with one’s closest friends.

2.
Pop Evil, “Waking Lions”: Pop Evil’s “Waking
Lions” is a well-written, melodic metal song with a great message. The song’s
perceived confidence really rubs off on you while you listen and builds you up
throughout. (video)
3.
Icarus The Owl, “Coma Dreams”: Icarus The Owl’s “Coma
Dreams” has a sound that blends Incubus,
The Academy Is… and 311
into a clean pop-punk/alt-rock track. It’s melodic and slightly dramatic, which
helps to keep your attention throughout the song’s story. (video)
4.
Father Mountain, “Sobriety”: “Sobriety” is a hopeful-yet-somber
track with deep, reflective lyrics. At times it’s uplifting, at others it’s
self-depreciating, but it all comes together with a cohesive melody in the vein
of the Postal Service. (video)
5.
The
Used, “Rise Up Lights”: Though the song was released as a single last week,
The Used have now released a video for “Rise Up Lights” from their new album ‘The
Canyon.’ The song comes out swinging with a sense of urgency, led by rushed
guitars and accented by almost inaudible screams of pain that intensify and radiate
throughout. The video also reflects this, graphically showing a man struggling
with his body and beauty standards to get in perfect performance shape. (video)
6.
Ought, “These 3 Things”: Aside from this having
one of the weirdest videos I’ve seen in a while, the song is pretty good.
Singer Tim Darcy has a very Morrissey-esque
voice, which blends nicely with the song’s 80s synth-rock feel. (video)
7.
Vance Joy, “Like Gold”: “Like Gold” is a simple,
acoustic-based song with a bouncing melody. The melody doesn’t quite soar the
way in the way you would expect it too, but it’s content, happy nature grounded
in reality still radiates the kind of warmth and love you are meant to feel
from it. (video)
8.
Portugal. The Man, “Live In The Moment”: It’s
hard to top the massive success that is “Feel It Still,” but Portugal. The Man
could come close with their latest single “Live In The Moment.” Aided by a
pounding snare and bass drum beat that keeps its momentum up, it’s the song’s
synth-pop melody and memorable hook that will keep you singing along long after
you stop listening. (video)
9.
All Time Low, “Good Times”: All Time Low has
finally released a video for their single “Good Times,” off their latest album,
‘Last Young Renegade.” First of all, this is a catchy song with a marching bass
drum line that aurally feels like embracing memories of the “good times” one
has with their friends. The video does a great job of reflecting this feeling,
following a group of high school friends at their prom. Intertwined with images
of them taking prom photos are flashbacks to them goofing around and enjoying
each other’s company. (video)
These are some of our favorite new rock songs and music
videos from the past week. Check these out and spend your weekend with great
new music.
