Week in Review: New Songs / Music Videos You Need To Check Out (June 24-June 30, 2018)

Over the course of a week, a lot of new music gets released. So much so that it can be hard to keep up with it all. Now that the weekend is upon us, it’s time to sit back, relax and take a look back at some of the new songs and music videos released over the last seven days.

This week saw the release of a lot of great new songs and music videos. The Smashing Pumpkins released a video for their reunion single “Solara.” XXXTentacion’s final music video came out. We got new pop-punk tunes from the likes of We The Kings, All Time Low, Oh, Weatherly and former Yellowcard frontman William Ryan Key, While Paramore put out a video for the latest single off their 2017 album ‘After Laughter.’ In country and folk, we got some great new songs from Florida Georgia Line, Passenger and Turner Cody.

Vinyl Bay 777, your music outlet, has been searching for the best new songs and music videos released this week. From pop and rock to folk and hip-hop, here are nine tracks we know you’ll love.

1.       Turner Cody, “Wee Wee Hours”: “Wee Wee Hours,” from New York folk singer-songwriter Turner Cody’s upcoming album ‘Duke of Decline,’ is the perfect mix of production and songwriting. It’s cool, laid back vibe and Americana charm make it perfect for when you yourself are up in the “wee wee hours” having good times with your friends under the stars. (video)

2.       We The Kings, “Even If It Kills Me”: The next single from We The Kings’ upcoming sixth album, “Even If It Kills Me” is an upbeat, pop-y track that melds the band’s early pop-punk melodies with their newer, more highly produced sound. It reminds me a little of the songs on their fourth album, but with a thin veil of electronics covering the vocals. (video)

3.       The Smashing Pumpkins, “Solara”: Having released the single “Solara” a few weeks ago, The Smashing Pumpkins have finally released a video to go with it. With a color scheme as dark as the song’s feel, the video finds frontman Billy Corgan escaping from what seems like a torturous dungeon only to find that nothing is normal on the outside either. Such a story line goes well with the song’s presumed theme of breaking away from society and being your own person. (video)

4.       Mike Shinoda, “Promises I Can’t Keep”: Of all the songs Mike Shinoda has released from his debut solo album so far, “Promises I Can’t Keep” is perhaps one of the strongest. Opting to sing rather than rap, it feels more like it could have been on the last Linkin Park album. I can hear a little bit of Chester Bennington in the melody, though it sounds really good with Shinoda’s slightly deeper voice. However, what drives the song home for me is the passion with which he performs it. (video)

5.       MNEK, “Colour”: “Colour” is an upbeat, feel good pop song that screams “celebration” at the top of its lungs. The song’s slight reggae undertone blend’s well with MNEK’s unique, light R&B vocals, adding to the party atmosphere of the song. I don’t particularly like Hailee Steinfeld’s voice for this song, it’s a bit too traditionally pop-y, but it’s not bad. (video)

6.       XXXTentacion, “Sad!”: XXXTentation, the up-and-coming hip-hop sensation that was gunned down a few weeks ago, released his video for his final single “Sad!” and it’s powerful. Even if you’re not a fan of hip-hop, you can appreciate the way he visualized the internal struggle he was feeling trying to overcome his past. (video)

7.       Florida Georgia Line, “Simple”: Florida Georgia Line hit it out of the park again with their latest single “Simple.” The song is a simple love song with a simple, swinging melody. The lyrics are easy for anyone to pick up right away and sing along. (video)

8.       Jessie Ware, “Sam”: “Sam” is a beautiful song, one that makes you feel something when you hear it. Especially with this acoustic version, the song feels so personal and real. Sure, you can hear Ed Sheeran’s influence on the song structure and melody, but he’s also really good at getting sentimental. So between his melody and her lyrics, this is a great to sit back and reflect with. (video)

9.       Super American, “Hands Down Olivia”: “Hands Down Olivia” has a late 1990s-early 2000s alternative vibe to it. Its light, easy-going melody makes this sunny tune worth a listen. (video)

The weekend is a great chance to catch up on all the new songs and music videos released over the last week. If you’re looking for a place to start, check out some of our favorites above. Then, let us know which songs / videos you dug this week in the comments below.

Live Shows in New York This Weekend (June 29-July 1, 2018)

The live music scene in New York is one-of-a-kind. From large-scale stadium and arena tours with the biggest names in music to small venues cultivating the next big thing, there is always something going on. And with the weekend just hours away, now is the perfect time to check out the music scene for yourself.

There is a lot going on this weekend, especially when it comes to rock music. You have pop-punk frontmen like Dave Hause, Dan Campbell and Ace Enders doing some solo shows. Broken Social Scene and Slowdive are both doing free shows in the city. Established rock bands Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Styx, Tesla, Quiet Riot and U2 will all be coming through the area this weekend.

Vinyl Bay 777, your music outlet, loves live music. That’s why we’ve once again searched the internet for this weekend’s hottest shows. Here are 10 that we think will be worth checking out.

1.       Dave Hause: The Loved Ones frontman Dave Hause released his third solo album, ‘Bury Me In Philly,’ last year to positive reviews. Catch Hause with his band The Mermaid for a one-off show / concert cruise around the city. Support for the show comes from fellow Americana punks Restorations. (Friday, Rocks Off Concert Cruise)

2.       Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Styx, Tesla: The worlds of punk metal and hard rock will merge tonight as Joan Jett and the Blackhearts and Styx’s co-headlining tour rolls through Long Island. Looking at reviews of past show stops, you can expect all the hits and possibly some surprises too. Tesla will be opening the show. (Friday, Jones Beach)

3.       Aaron West and the Roaring Twenties, Ace Enders: Taking a break from their respective full-time pop-punk bands, Aaron West and the Roaring Twenties (Dan Campbell of The Wonder Years) and Ace Enders (The Early November) will be sharing a one-night-only bill in Brooklyn tonight. This is Aaron West and the Roaring Twenties’ only upcoming show of the year, so you won’t want to miss it. Also, get there early and check out King Neptune, who is a fantastic local pop-punk / indie band from Long Island. (Friday, Kingsland)

4.       Color Block Party: If you like free outdoor art parties, than you’ll want to check out the Color Block Party happening this Saturday on the Pier 17’s new Hieneken Riverdeck. Artist GERONIMO will be unveiling her latest colorful creation while DJs and food trucks provide for an all-day party, while performances from Brittany Sky and headliners Cut Copy will be taking the celebration into the night. (Saturday, Pier 17)

5.       Full Moon Fest 2018: Returning for another year, Full Moon Fest will be taking place this weekend. The festival will feature 20 bands over three stages at Brooklyn’s Knockdown Center, including performances from Metronomy, Whitney and a DJ set from LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy. Starting at 2 PM, the party will be going all night “until the moon begins to set.” (Saturday, The Knockdown Center)

6.       Slowdive: The next installment of the Vans House Parties series happens this weekend with recently reunited indie-rockers Slowdive playing the role of curator. The band has tapped Farrows and Vorhees to open the show with a visual experience created by Drew Reynolds and Ivan Seal. RSVP for this free event is open now with entry on a first-come, first served basis. (Saturday, House of Vans)

7.       Quiet Riot: With a new album on the way this August and new lead singer James Durban (‘American Idol’) waiting to be broken in, Quiet Riot are ready to get the headbanging started. The band will be bringing their Blockbuster Hit Parade tour to Long Island this weekend with Afterburn, Vice, The Sweet and House of Lords as support. (Saturday, Mulcahy’s)

8.       Broken Social Scene: For Canada Day, Summerstage Central Park will be presenting the Northern Beat, an afternoon / evening of indie-rock and folk groups out of Toronto. Broken Social Scene headline the free event with Mélissa Laveaux and The East Pointers opening. (Sunday, Summerstage Central Park)

9.       U2: Having played two shows at Madison Square Garden earlier this week on their eXPERIENCE + iNNOCENCE tour, U2 close out the North American leg with three more tri-state area shows this weekend. (Sunday, Madison Square Garden)

10.   3lau: 3lau released his debut full-length, ‘Ultraviolet,’ earlier this year, making him one of the most talked about up-and-coming EDM DJs out there. He will be back on his home turf of Long Island this weekend to get the summer party started in South Hampton. (Sunday, AM Southampton)

There is always something going on in New York’s vibrant music scene and this weekend is no exception. Check out some of our show highlights above and let us know what/who you’re excited to see in the comments below.

Six Great Songs About the Great Outdoors

June is Great Outdoors Month. Started 20 years ago as a week-long observance, the celebration has escalated to an entire month recognizing the importance of getting outside and being active. The warmer weather the first full week of summer has brought with it this final week of June is the perfect time to get out and enjoy nature… especially when you have the right music to enhance the experience.

Nature is a very popular subject in music. From songs about witnessing the natural beauty of one’s surroundings to those that urge people to live life and feel the sun on their skin, musicians have been singing about the outdoors for centuries.

In honor of Great Outdoors Month, Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, is taking a look at songs about being outdoors and experiencing nature. Here are six that will have you running to your nearest park to sit out and watch the clouds pass by.

1.       John Denver, “Country Roads”: A love letter to the beauty of country life and the Midwest, John Denver’s “Country Roads” finds the singer yearning for the mountains and rivers that make the countryside feel like “home.” (video)

2.       Blur, “Country House”: Sometimes you just need to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life and head out to the country for a little R & R. Blur’s “Country House” was written about former Food Records founder David Balfe’s sale of the company and subsequent move to a farmhouse in Bedfordshire to get away from it all. Though it’s not expressly about nature, it does mention (albeit a bit sarcastically) the mental healing properties and “rural charm” of the countryside and living the “simple life.” (video)

3.       Louis Armstrong, “What A Wonderful World”: It’s not hard to hear the beauty of Louis Armstrong’s classic “What A Wonderful World” and think about the beauty of its subject matter. Through the colorful imagery of green trees, red roses, blue skies, white clouds and pretty rainbows, the song extols the joys and wonders of the world. Just the thought of it all brings a smile to one’s face. (video)

4.       Weezer, “Island In The Sun”: With lyrics like “when you’re on a golden sea / you don’t need no memory” and “on an island in the sun / we’ll be playing and having fun,” and a laid-back island melody, Weezer’s “Island In The Sun” just feels like sunshine. The imagery created by the song puts you in that summer mindset, making you want to head out to the beach and relax in the sand. (video)

5.       U2, “Beautiful Day”: There is something about a bright blue sky on a beautiful day that makes you want to get out and seize the day. U2’s 2000 hit “Beautiful Day,” though political at its core, exemplifies this. The song’s lyrics remind you that no matter what is going on, you might as well enjoy a beautiful day before it’s gone, saying “it’s a beautiful day / don’t let it get away.” (video)

6.       Woody Guthrie, “This Land is Your Land”: What list of nature songs would be complete without Woody Guthrie’s classic tune about nature and nationalism, “This Land Is Your Land.” The song (at least the verses that people commonly know) celebrates the bountiful wonders of America’s land, sea and sky. Lyrics like “sparkling sands of her diamond deserts,” “endless skyway” and “golden valley” produce clearly vivid imagery of nature’s beauty, making you want to go out and experience it for yourself. (video)

Music has always been fascinated by nature and outdoor imagery, with artists writing about everything from sun-filled island skies to the mountainous and tree-filled wilderness of the west. Songs like those above are perfect for celebrating Great Outdoors Month and heading out on your own nature adventure.

Week in Review: New Songs / Music Videos You Need to Check Out (June 17-23, 2018)

The first official weekend of summer is here! What better way to spend it than to sit out in the sun (when it stops raining) and catch up on all the new music that came out over the last week?

There was no shortage of great new songs and music videos released this week. Jay-Z and Beyoncé surprise released a joint album with a brand new music video to go with it. Panic! at the Disco released a new video to go with the release of their new album. Pop-punkers We The Kings and music legend Paul McCartney both released new songs to go with their album announcements. In pop, PRETTYMUCH, Demi Lovato, OneRepublic and Ariana Grande all released new singles this week. Rock and indie also saw a lot of excellent new release from the likes of Sylvan Esso, St. Vincent, Father John Misty, Florence + the Machine, Halestorm, Gang of Four, Iggy Pop and more.

Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, loves new music. That’s why we have once again been scouring the internet for the best new songs and music videos of the week. Here are eight of our favorites that we think you’ll enjoy.

1.       Panic! at the Disco, “Hey Look Ma, I Made It”: In the wake of the release of their sixth studio album, ‘Pray For The Wicked,’ this week, Panic! at the Disco has also released a music video for their song “Hey Look Ma, I Made It.” The song is an upbeat, dance-y track that sounds positive on the surface, but goes deeper within the lyrics to comment on fame and the music industry. An extension of this commentary is the video, which finds a puppet of frontman Brandon Urie getting famous, abusing drugs and sobering up to realize he is a disposable “puppet” for the record label. (video)

2.       PRETTYMUCH, “Summer On You”: Somewhere inside me there is a weakness for boy bands and PRETTYMUCH’s latest single “Summer On You” satisfies that. Virtually acapella (there are hints of guitar and drum loops), it’s really easy to hear the outstanding harmonies between the five voices. The song is also very well planned out with every note hitting at perfect points with snaps punctuating the end of every line, making it very satisfying to snap along. (video)

3.       We The Kings, “On My Love”: We The Kings announced their sixth studio album, ‘Six,’ this week with a brand new song. “On My Love” starts out a bit like an indie-rock track (the band that came to mind while listening to it was Death Cab for Cutie). But as the bass and guitars kick in, all of a sudden the song takes you back old-school, “Check Yes Juliet” We The Kings, except pop-punk-y. What is so remarkable about the song though is that it is very easy to catch on to it. I found myself singing along halfway into the song and really feeling its “I will never let you down” vibes. (video)

4.       Demi Lovato, “Sober”: Demi Lovato gets real on her latest single “Sober.” Far from the pop-y and empowering fare of her usual singles, the song finds her vulnerable, apologizing for falling off the wagon and causing her loved ones so much pain. The weight of the song falls on Lovato’s heartbroken vocals, which are only accompanied by a minor key piano melody that rises and falls when the vocal dictates. (video)

5.       OneRepublic feat. Logic, “Start Again”: Whatever OneRupublic’s formula for writing hits is it really works. The band’s latest single, “Start Again,” has that same joyous, “see the world anew” vibe that has always made their music feel like you’re reflecting on life while sitting under the stars. (video)

6.       Gorillaz, “Hollywood”: The latest single from Gorillaz’s upcoming album, “Hollywood” has a slow, almost hypnotic vibe to it. Commenting on Hollywood and the lifestyle associated with it, the song’s point is abundantly clear in the way it’s put together. There is so much going on in the song that the rap verse from Snoop Dogg doesn’t even feel like overkill. (video)

7.       Paul McCartney, “I Don’t Know” and “Come On To Me”: A lot of times, new music from older artists sounds, for lack of a better word, old. But Paul McCartney manages to avoid this on his new singles, “I Don’t Know” and “Come On To Me,” the first from his upcoming 17th studio album, ‘Egypt Station.’ “I Don’t Know” is a contemplative, piano-driven ballad full of heartache and sympathy. In contrast, “Come On To Me” is a mildly upbeat song about hooking up with someone that somehow makes sense coming from a man who just turned 76. The quality of these singles makes me very interested in what the former Beatle has up his sleeve next. (“I Don’t Know” ; “Come On To Me”)

8.       St. Vincent, “Fast Slow Disco”:  A reworking of “Slow Disco” from her latest album ‘Masseduction,’ “Fast Slow Disco” is a sweaty, 80s-inspired dance tune that sounds both retro and futuristic at the same time. The Madonna-esque melody and vocals are energizing, perfect for going out to a club and dancing the night away. (video)

A lot of great new songs and music videos were released over the last week. Check out some of our favorites above and let us know what new tracks you’ll be listening to in order to kick off the first official weekend of summer.

Shows to Check Out in New York this Weekend (6/22-6/24/2018)

New York has one of the most vibrant music scenes in the world. Between large-scale arena shows from big-name artists and the small venues incubating the talent of tomorrow, there is always something going on. With the weekend just around the corner, now is the perfect time to experience all the live music the area has to offer.

This weekend has not shortage of shows coming up, especially when it comes to rock music. Fans of “emo” and pop-punk can dance the night away at Emo Nite LA and Emo Night Brooklyn or check out Jeremy Enigk for a rare live show. Foreigner, Whitesnake and Lynyrd Skynyrd will be bringing out the hits for those who want to rock. Punk mainstays like the Dropkick Murphys, Flogging Molly and The Adolescents are in town as are ska brethren The English Beat and The Toasters.

Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, loves live music. That’s why we’ve once again created a list of some of the hottest shows happening in New York this weekend. Here are 12 shows to get your weekend rocking.

1.       Jeremy Enigk: Sunny Day Real Estate frontman Jeremy Enigk has been busy the last couple of years. Last year he put out the critically adored ‘Ghosts,’ his first album in nearly eight years. Then, earlier this year, he released an expanded reissue of his debut solo album, ‘Return of the Frog Queen,’ remastering the piece and adding five bonus tracks of the songs being played live on the radio. He is currently on a ‘Frog Queen’ anniversary tour, playing the songs with a full-band on his first large-scale tour in a while.  (Friday, Music Hall of Williamsburg)

2.       Dropkick Murphys & Flogging Molly: As two of the largest Celt-punk band out there right now, the teaming up of the Dropkick Murphys and Flogging Molly for a co-headlining tour sounds like a match made in heaven. Check out the second-to-last date of the tour tonight in Queens for what is sure to be a raucous night of music. (Friday, Forest Hills Stadium)

3.       Foreigner & Whitesnake: The worlds of soft rock and metal collide on Long Island this weekend as Foreigner and Whitesnake head down to the beach on their “Juke Box Heroes” tour. Expect to hear all the hits and more. The show will be opened by Jason Bonham’s Led Zeppelin Evening, adding even more epic music to the mix. (Friday, Jones Beach Theater)

4.       Drake Bell: Earlier this week, television star-turned-musician Drake Bell released two new songs, his first new music since last year’s ‘Honest’ EP. Bell wraps up his “Stripped” tour this weekend, playing intimate acoustic sets in New York and New Jersey. (Friday, Knitting Factory)

5.       Emo Nite LA: Emo Nite LA returns to New York for a giant “emo” and pop-punk party! Gym Class Heroes frontman Travis McCoy, Hellogoodbye, Chiodos frontman Craig Owens and Finch’s Nate and Randy will be performing with special DJ sets from Fryan Kienle of Matchbook Romance, Brian Logan Dales and Dilly Dally. Get ready to let your inner high school pop-punk out for an unforgettable night of nostalgia! (Friday, Brooklyn Steel)

6.       Lynyrd Skynyrd: Southern rockers Lynyrd Skynyrd are calling it a day, heading out on one last tour to say goodbye. The “Last of the Street Survivors Farewell Tour” will run through the fall with special guests joining them at every stop. The tour hits Long Island this weekend with Bishop Gunn, Peter Wolf and Atlanta Rhythm Section opening. (Saturday, Jones Beach Theater)

7.       The Adolescents: Pioneers of the California punk scene, The Adolescents are bringing the rage to the east coast this week. The band released their eighth studio album, ‘Manifest Density,’ in 2016. Electric Frankenstein will be opening the show. (Saturday, Brooklyn Bazaar)

8.       Emo Night Brooklyn: If Emo Nite LA wasn’t enough 2000s pop-punk for you, spinoff Emo Night Brooklyn will be bringing their party to Long Island on Saturday. While a confirmed line-up has not been released, there have been some big names that have turned up unannounced in the past. (Saturday, Amityville Music Hall)

9.       The English Beat: It has been 36 years since Dave Wakeling released an album with The English Beat. That changed this earlier this month when the 2-tone ska band released their new album, ‘Here We Go Love.’ The band is taking the new album for a spin out on tour throughout the summer and fall, stopping in New York this weekend to end the east coast leg with a bang. Ghost Town Steppas will be on tap to open. (Sunday, The Bell House)

10.   Porch Stomp: With this being the first weekend of summer, Porch Stomp returns to Governor’s Island for a fifth season as part of Make Music NY. The event promotes the city’s underground folk and Americana scene, offering more than 15 performance stages, workshops and jam sessions across Nolan Park. (Sunday, Governor’s Island)

11.   The Toasters: As if The English Beat wasn’t enough ska for one day, New York’s own The Toasters will also be playing in Brooklyn this Sunday. The show is part of their month-long tour and will have Joker’s Republic and Beat Brigade opening. (Sunday, Knitting Factory)

12.   Years & Years: One of the most talked about up-and-comers in synthpop, Years & Years is gearing up to release their sophomore album, ‘Palo Santo,’ next month. In anticipation, the band will be playing a few select US “parties” to get people even more excited for their pop-y new music. The New York date happens this weekend with Raffaella opening. (Sunday, Brooklyn Steel)

With the weekend almost here, now is the perfect chance to check out New York’s one-of-a-kind music scene for yourself. Check out these or any of the other countless shows happening around the area this weekend and rock out!

Six Memorable World Cup Songs

Music has always been a unifying factor in sports. Especially with football (soccer), chanting and singing are organic parts of fandom, bringing people closer together toward a common goal, love of their team and a desire for them to win. And with the 2018 World Cup in Russia in full swing, there is a lot of celebratory music in the air.

Taking place every four years, the World Cup brings together 32 countries from all over the world to vie for football gold. That also means that every four years, official World Cup anthems and songs are released to rally fans and pump up teams for success. Usually loud, upbeat and festive, these songs usually range from good to downright bad, but there are always a few that stick out from the rest, becoming megahits and uniting the world in musical enjoyment.

With the 2018 World Cup underway right now, Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, is taking a look at some of the more successful and memorable songs made popular during the tournament. Here are six winning anthems guaranteed to make you stand up and cheer.

1.       Ricky Martin, “The Cup of Life”: With Ricky Martin’s burgeoning popularity in the late 1990s, he was the perfect choice to come up with an official World Cup anthem for the 1998 tournament in France. What transpired, “La Copa da Vida (The Cup of Life)” became more than a uniting and uplifting sports anthem, it became a massive hit. The song reached number one in many countries and helped lead the way for the Latin pop explosion in the late 1990s-early 2000s. (video)

2.       Shakira, “Waka Waka”: Coming out of the same Latin pop boom as Ricky Martin, Shakira was already a well-known name when she was chosen to come up with a World Cup song for the 2010 series in South Africa. Her entry, “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa),” was built off the song “Zangalewa” by African group Golden Sounds, adding in some hip-shaking Latin flair and lyrics meant to empower the players to fight and win. The song gained massive ground, becoming a number one hit for Shakira and one of the top songs of that year. (video)

3.       Arrow, “Hot Hot Hot”: Though not specifically written for the World Cup, Arrow’s 1982 hit “Hot Hot Hot” became the official anthem of the 1986 games in Mexico. From its first blaring call to action to its danceable salsa beat, the song is perfect for getting a crowd riled up and on their feet. (video)

4.       Nicky Jam, “Live It Up”: Recorded for this year’s World Cup, Puerto Rican singer Nicky Jam’s reggae-infused anthem is destined to become one of the biggest bangers in event history. Featuring Kosovar singer Era Istrefi and the triumphant musical return of Will Smith, the song is one heck of a party jam, seamlessly cutting between the three artists with a beat that never lets up for a minute. (video)

5.       Shakira, “La La La (Brazil 2014)”: One of the only artists who has written songs for multiple World Cups, Shakira returned in 2014 for the Brazil games with “La La La (Brazil 2014).” Originally written for her tenth studio album, the song was reworked for the tournament. The new version, spouting a message of “If you want it, I dare you to prove it,” is much more dance-oriented than many World Cup songs of the last 20 years. (video)

6.       Queen, “We Are The Champions”: Obviously not written for the World Cup, but “We Are The Champions” was rereleased as one of the official songs of the 1994 tournament in the United States. The song’s triumphant grandeur has become almost synonymous with sports over the years, especially when a team wins. So, it’s really no surprise that a song so popular at games from one of the most iconic US rock bands in existence would be chosen to create hype for the World Cup. (video)

World Cup songs and anthems serve to bring people together and get them hyped for the global football tournament ahead. The songs above did just that and more for music and pop culture during their respective years.

Week in Review: New Songs / Music Videos You Need to Check Out (June 10-16, 2018)

A lot of new music has come out over the last week. So much so that it can be hard to keep up with all of it. Now that the weekend is here, it’s time to take a look back at some of the new songs and music videos that came out over the last seven days.

This week saw some great songs and videos across the musical spectrum. Drake released a heavily talked-about video that hit hard with the nostalgia. Death Cab for Cutie and the Plain White T’s both announced new albums this week, which they each followed up with new videos. Chaka Khan released her first new song in more than a decade. We got brand new songs from vocalists like Tom Odell, George Ezra, Shawn Mendes and Jason Mraz. In rock, Arcade Fire and State Champs both released new videos while Young the Giant, The Struts and Gorillaz all released great new songs.

Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, has once again been scouring the internet for the week’s best new songs and music videos. Here are 11 that we think are worth a listen / view.

1.       Arcade Fire, “Chemistry”: There is a lot going on in Arcade Fire’s latest single “Chemistry.” The song mixes together Caribbean horns, 80s power-rock and a little bit of blues timing to create a unique sound that you can’t help but groove along to. (video)

2.       Tom Odell, “If You Wanna Love Somebody”: “If You Wanna Love Somebody” starts off as this soft, piano-driven confession of love. But as the song progresses the rest of the instruments kick in, ramping-up the passion and intent. The song ends in this triumphant whirlwind of sound that overtakes you with joy and renewed hope. (video)

3.       George Ezra, “Shotgun”: George Ezra takes his impressively (and impossibly) deep and soulful voice to new territory with “Shotgun.” The song has more of a pop/dance flair than his previous hit “Budapest,” which seems a little off at first given the depth of his voice. However, the song grows on you by the middle and you can’t help but tap your foot along to the beat. (video)

4.       The Struts, “Body Talks”:  Starting out like a jazzy, finger-snapping Broadway show tune, “Body Talks” explodes into this big rockabilly number that will have you dancing in your seat. (video)

5.       Plain White T’s, “Your Body”: Along with the announcement of their eighth album, ‘Parallel Universe,’ this week, Plain White T’s released a new single. “Your Body” isn’t the kind of acoustic love song that made the pop-punk band famous. Instead, the song melds sweet, sincere pop with understated electronic instrumentals, giving off a more rock vibe while still maintaining the band’s simple love song formula. (video)

6.       Drake, “I’m Upset”: Drake released his latest single “I’m Upset” this week, and even though it is a decently executed bit of slow rap, it’s the song’s video that has had everyone talking this week. Pulling from his days as a teen actor on the show ‘Degrassi: the Next Generation,’ the rapper staged a high school reunion for his fictional classmates, giving fans of the early 2000’s show closure on all the characters involved. (video)

7.       Jason Mraz, “Unlonely”: The king of wordplay is back! The second single from Mraz’s upcoming album, “Unlonely” brings back the speed-talking pop culture references of his early music, but this time wraps them neatly into the upbeat, feel good melodics of his later material. (video)
8.       Death Cab for Cutie, “Gold Rush”: Earlier this week, Death Cab for Cutie announced the upcoming release of their ninth studio album, ‘Thank You for Today,’ and along with it came the release of the album’s first single. According to NPR, “Gold Rush” was written about the passage of time and how neighborhoods you once knew become unrecognizable. The song derives its pace from a sample of Yoko Ono’s “Mind Train,” a tune which complements the reflective nature of the song’s melody and theme. (video)

9.       Shawn Mendes, “Nervous”: There is something generally endearing about Shawn Mendes in the video for his latest single “Nervous.” There is something very honest about this song. You can hear his smile in his voice when he sings (not just the one on his face in the video while a disembodied pair of female arms caresses him from behind), which in return makes you smile inside too. It also doesn’t hurt that the song has a decent beat and a melody that is both minimal and catchy. (video)

10.   Chaka Khan, “Like Sugar”: Chaka Khan released her first new single in 11 years this week. “Like Sugar” is a soulful jam lead by Khan’s incredibly powerful vocals and a pounding snare loop that holds it all together. It could probably go a bit further, as it would probably sound really good with some brass fanfare, however it still has enough groove to get you out of your seat and moving along. (video)

11.   Darius Rucker, “Straight to Hell”: A tune about debauchery and sin, Darius Rucker’s latest single “Straight to Hell” is a fun, upbeat honky-tonk jam. Calling on his friends Luke Bryan, Jason Aldean and Charles Kelley to trade off verses, the song feels like a party in more ways than one. Also, setting the video in an underground speakeasy makes it even more perfect. (video)

With all the new music that comes out over the course of the week, it can be hard to keep up with all of it. That’s why the weekend is the perfect time to catch up. Bands Who’s Cover Songs Were More Popular Than Their Originals

Earlier this month, third wave “emo” band Weezer released their cover of Toto’s “Africa,” something fans had been pressuring the band to do for almost a year. The band’s cover has now become their first mainstream hit in nearly a decade, hitting the Billboard Hot 100 at number 89. Despite having released two outstanding albums in the last five years, the band hasn’t had a Hot 100 single since 2009’s “(If You’re Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To” from the mediocre-at-best ‘Raditude.’

Weezer isn’t the only band to have a cover chart higher than some of their originals. A lot of artists have hits with songs other artists have written. There are even artists whose only claim to fame is their cover of someone else’s song.

With that in mind, Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, is taking a look at artists whose covers outperformed their original singles on the charts. Whether they charted with their own songs later or not, here are seven whose covers have come to define their careers.

1.       Whitney Houston, “I Will Always Love You”: Houston is a great example of a successful artist having even bigger success with a cover. Although she had been releasing number one songs in the United States for more than a decade, her transformative cover of Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You” became her biggest hit of all time. It’s her only single to have gone multi-platinum upon its first release, as well as an extra two times platinum after her untimely passing in 2012.

2.       Alien Ant Farm, “Smooth Criminal”: You can’t go a day without hearing Alien Ant Farm’s 2001 cover of Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal” on rock radio. It became the band’s biggest single, as it was the only one to chart on the Hot 100. The song even eclipsed their original song, “Movies,” on the modern and mainstream rock charts.

3.       Joan Jett, “I Love Rock ‘N’ Roll”: Joan Jett had her biggest hit in 1982 with “I Love Rock ‘N’ Roll,” a track originally written and recorded by Arrows in 1975. The song became her first and only number one hit, charting higher than her best-known originals “Bad Reputation,” “Crimson and Clover” and “I Hate Myself for Loving You.”

4.       Sinead O’Connor, “Nothing Compares 2 U”: Originally written by Prince and recorded by his band The Family, “Nothing Compares 2 U” was pretty much a wash until O’Connor took it on. Her 1990 cover of the song became a number one hit and her most well-known single. Although her following single, “The Emperor’s New Clothes,” also hit number one in the US, O’Connor would never see the kind of staying power with her own compositions that “Nothing” has had.

5.       The Ataris, “Boys of Summer”: Pop-punk band The Ataris entered the halls of rock infamy when they released their cover of Don Henley’s “Boys of Summer” from their fourth album, ‘So Long, Astoria,’ as a single in 2003. Increasing the pace and changing a couple of the lyrics to reach a different audience, the song outperformed the album’s previous single “In This Diary” on the US Alternative chart, and was their only single to chart in the Hot 100.

6.       Aretha Franklin, “Respect”: No stranger to the charts, Aretha Franklin has been releasing hit after hit for more than five decades. However, it was her 1967 cover of Otis Redding’s 1965 song “Respect” that really put her on the map. The song was not only her first Hot 100 number one, but also became a women’s empowerment anthem for decades to come. Though she would become known for songs like “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” and “Chain of Fools” as well, nothing would compare to the popularity of “Respect.”

7.       The Monkees, “I’m A Believer”: Before Smash Mouth covered the song for the ‘Shrek’ soundtrack, television actors-turned-real band The Monkees recorded a cover of Neil Diamond’s “I’m A Believer” for their sophomore album, ‘More Monkees.’ It was the band’s first number-one single outside of North America and kickstarted their real life music career. The popularity of “I’m A Believer” surpassed that of songs that were specifically written for the band, like “Pleasant Valley Sunday” and “Daydream Believer.”

Sometimes it happens that an artist will find greater fame covering other people’s songs than with their originals. Such is the case with the artists listed above, whose biggest (and sometimes only) hits were originally recorded by others. Weezer’s fan-requested cover of “Africa” now joins that list, though its popularity will probably not overtake their biggest hit, “Beverly Hills.”
