Week In Review: New Songs / Music Videos You Need To Check Out (June 3-9, 2018)

Another busy week has come and gone. With the weekend here, it’s time to take a look back at some of the new songs and music videos that came out over the last seven days.

This has been a great week for new rock music. We got the first new song from the recently semi-reunited Smashing Pumpkins’ upcoming album. Gorillaz released another new song from their upcoming album, as did Bullet For My Valentine. We also got new music videos from the likes of Albert Hammond Jr., Ben Rector and Twin Shadows. Then in pop-punk, the week came with some new tunes from Dance Gavin Dance, Real Friends, New Found Glory and WSTR, and a new music video from Neck Deep.

Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, has once again scoured the internet for the best new songs and music videos of the last week. Here are eight to get your weekend started off right.

1.       Albert Hammond Jr., “Far Away Truths”: The latest single from The Strokes frontman Albert Hammond Jr.’s fourth solo album, “Far Away Truths” is an upbeat song that will have you bouncing along to the groove. Mixing 80s synth-pop with classic rock, the guitar-driven melody brims with excitement and movement. (video)

2.       Ben Rector, “Old Friends”: I love songs that reminisce on the passing of time and “Old Friends” really hits the nail on the head with its sentimentality. Its piano-driven melody gives it a vibe that makes you smile and think about the “good old days.” The video really brings it home, literally and figuratively, having his old band play the song with him in the garage of his childhood home while pop-ups about his friend and his past come up on the screen. (video)

3.       Maroon 5, “Three Little Birds”: Recorded for Hyundai’s FIFA World Cup campaign, Maroon 5 has released a cover of the Bob Marley classic “3 Little Birds.” The song is a perfect fit for the band, delving into the jazzier tones of the band’s early work. Adam Lavine’s raspy voice hasn’t been utilized this well in a while. (video)

4.       Neck Deep, “Don’t Wait”: One of the breakout pop-punk bands of 2017, Neck Deep just released a video for their latest single “Don’t Wait.” Said to be the heaviest track from ‘The Peace And The Panic,’ the song gives a passionate plea for people to take their own action in this political climate. It has one of the best uses of dirty vocals I’ve heard in a while, coming in just when the song comes to its emotional climax ¾ of the way in. The video is also very well done, taking the darkness of the song and bringing in casual religious imagery and interwoven character arcs to get its point across. (video)

5.       Real Friends, “From The Outside”: Following the events of the last week, the theme of Real Friends’ “From The Outside” feels even more important. Just because someone looks fine, that doesn’t mean that they feel that way when they’re alone with themselves. This song does a great job of painting a picture of that feeling, matching poignant lyrics with a melody and passion that you makes you feel like screaming the lyrics at the top of your lungs. (video)

6.       WSTR, “Bad To The Bone”: “Bad To The Bone” is a fun, tongue-in-cheek pop-punk song. Unlike many singers in the genre, frontman Sammy Clifford pronounces every word clearly and crisply, so you can understand what he’s saying. Because of this and his deeper vocal range, the song comes off rather sharp, adding a sort of faux defiance to it. The video is also great, showing the band play with an Ouija board before they record the video and all the bad things that happen to them during filming. (video)

7.       Twin Shadow feat. Haim, “Saturdays”: “Saturdays” feels like the weekend wrapped in a 3 and a half minute song. With its snappy beat and 80s inspired guitars, the song keeps you invested with its upbeat groove and makes you feel good. (video)

8.       Smashing Pumpkins, “Solara”: After (mostly) reuniting their original line-up earlier this year, the Smashing Pumpkins have officially released their first single in 18 years together. “Solara,” in a way, harkens back to the band’s 1990s sound with its chunky guitar riff and drum beat. However, the sound is also a bit heavier, made fuller by layering the vocals and thickening the guitars’ sound, especially around the chorus. (video)
