New York Events Celebrating Woodstock’s 50th Anniversary

The Woodstock Music and Arts Festival celebrates its 50^th anniversary this weekend. Originally taking place August 15-17, 1969, the historic festival summed up an era of “peace, love and music” that has continued to inspire five decades on.

Even without Woodstock 50, there are a lot of tributes happening around the New York area to celebrate the festival’s 50^th anniversary. Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, is taking a look at some of this weekend’s events ranging from concerts to movies to art exhibits. Whether you’re heading out to the original grounds or staying right here on Long Island, here are six ways you can celebrate Woodstock on this historic anniversary.

1.       Bethel Woods: Why not spend the anniversary of Woodstock at the place where it happened? The Bethel Woods Center For The Arts is celebrating all weekend long with special shows from Ringo Starr (August 16), Santana and The Doobie Brothers (August 17) and John Fogerty (August 18). If you can’t make it up this weekend, the museum’s special ‘We Are Golden: Reflections on the 50^th Anniversary of the Woodstock Festivals and Aspirations for a Peaceful Future’ exhibit goes on until December 31. That’s not to mention that it will be a whole lot easier to revel at the concert grounds post-Woodstock as security will be tight around the venue this weekend.

2.       ‘Woodstock: The Director’s Cut’: If you’re looking to see never-before-seen footage from the original Woodstock festival, Fathom Events is showing the director’s cut of the original ‘Woodstock’ film on August 15. Locations on Long Island showing the film include the Regal Westbury 12, the Regal Farmingdale 10, Farmingdale Multiplex Cinemas, Regal Deer Park 16 & IMAX and the AMC Stony Brook 17, among others. A full list of New York theaters showing the film can be found on the Fathom Events website.

3.       Morrison Hotel Gallery: If you want to see some photography from the historic event, Morrison Hotel Gallery locations in New York, Los Angeles and Maui will be hosting an exhibit called “Woodstock: 3 Days That Lasted 50 Years.” Featuring works from Henry Diltz (the official Woodstock photographer), Elliott Landy, Lisa Law, Ken Regan, Amalie R. Rothschild, Rowland Scherman and Baron Wolman, the exhibit runs through August 31.

4.       Café Wha?: A staple of 60s counterculture itself and a first home to many of the acts who would go on to perform at Woodstock, Café Wha? will be doing their own tribute to the festival this Friday (August 16). JT Curtis of Let It Be and Joan Chew of Lez Zeppelin will be on hand to cover the music of the original event’s biggest draws, including Jefferson Airplane, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, The Who and more.

5.       Deepwells Farm: Those looking to head out east on Long Island can find an outdoor tribute to Woodstock at Deepwells Farm County Park in St. James this Saturday (August 17). The event runs from 2PM to 8PM (doors open at 1PM) and features tribute performances from The Janis Joplin Experience featuring Lisa Polizzi (Janis Joplin), the Kerry Kearney Band (Jimi Hendrix and Jefferson Airplane), Reckoning (the Grateful Dead) and Dear Prudence (general Woodstock favorites and the Beatles), with a special appearance from Zebra’s Randy Jackson.

6.       Jones Beach Bandshell: Over to the west, Jones Beach has their own Woodstock tributes scheduled as part of their summer concert series at the bandshell. Friday (August 16) will pay homage to The Who with a performance from tribute band Who’s Next with special guest Katie Pearlman. Then on Saturday (August 17), Willie And The Poor Boys will pay tribute to Creedence Clearwater Revival and Lisa Polizzi will make her second appearance of the day in tribute to Janis Joplin.

Woodstock turns 50 this weekend and there are many ways to celebrate the momentous occasion in New York. From visiting the original location to watching archive footage from the event to outstanding tribute concerts both in the city and Long Island, there is an event for however you want to celebrate.

New York Spring & Summer Music Festivals to Get Excited for in 2019

Festival season is upon us! With both weekends of Coachella out of the way and Austin City Limits having just announced its line-up for the fall, those days of great music and memories under the sun are no longer a distant thought.

Living in New York, you don’t have to go far to find some of the summer’s hottest festivals. Between the world-renown Governor’s Ball and Electric Zoo festivals, the summer-long city-sponsored Summerstage and Celebrate Brooklyn shows and the localized and smaller festivals, New York will be bursting with live music this summer.

Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, is gearing up for festival season by bringing you a list of the New York music festivals to keep on your radar. Check out these 10 for the ultimate summer of music!

1.       Red Bull Music Festival: Red Bull’s annual festival showcasing one-of-a-kind performances from an eclectic array of new and established artists started this week with two performances from Latina singer Rosalia on Tuesday and there’s still a lot to look forward to. The multi-venue, nearly month-long showcase boasts performances from JPEGMAFIA, Tierra Whack, FKA Twigs, Teyana Taylor and more, including a special premiere of Holly Herndon’s upcoming concept album ‘Proto.’ (Now-5/18)

2.       Governors Ball: With Panorama skipping the 2019 festival season, Governors Ball is once again the biggest three-day event in the city. New York’s indie answer to Coachella, the festival draws in people from all across the country and globe for a line-up that features the biggest names in music today. This year boasts headlining performances from Tyler, The Creator, Lil Wayne, Florence + The Machine, The 1975, Major Lazer, Nas and The Strokes with more than 70+ artists playing in total. That’s not to mention the “After Dark” pre and post festival shows scattered around the city. (5/31-6/2)

3.       Summerstage: Once again expanding beyond its original home in Central Park, City Parks Summerstage provides an entire summers-worth of eclectic live music and dance choices ranging from rock, pop and hip-hop to jazz and classical at parks throughout the five boroughs, many of which are free to attend. Some of this year’s highlights include free sets from Big Freedia, the Aussie BBQ festival, Japanese Breakfast, Alvvays, Lisa Lisa, Jody Watley, EPMD, Corinne Bailey Rae, The Mountain Goats, Talib Kweli and The Wailers, as well as benefit shows with George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic, Kurt Vile, Guster, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Bloc Party and The B-52s. More shows are still being added, taking the festivities into the fall. (6/1-10/1)

4.       BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn!: In addition to Summerstage, Brooklyn’s Prospect Park has its own summer-long mostly free festival. Celebrate Brooklyn takes place at the park’s historic bandshell, this year’s eclectic performers include free sets from Patti LaBelle, Calexico with Iron & Wine, Liz Phair and Ted Leo and the Pharmacists and Bomba Estereo, and benefit shows from The National and Courtney Barnett, Father John Misty and Jason Isbell and Mac Demarco. 5.       Make Music New York: Not your typical music festival, Make Music New York is a musical celebration that takes place during the summer solstice every year. Modeled after France’s Fête de la Musique, musicians of all levels are encouraged to “take center stage and share their skills and passions through live performances in public plazas and parks, on sidewalks and in front of shops, and in partnership with cultural institutions and businesses across all five boroughs.” Some of the special events you can witness/participate in include folk hootenanny Porch Stomp, underground punk happening Punk Island and Mass Appeal sets with many musicians playing one kind of instrument. 6.       Warped Tour: Warped Tour may officially be over as a touring festival, but that doesn’t mean it’s over. Like many expected, Kevin Lyman brought the name back to celebrate what would have been its 25^th season. Instead of a summer of touring, the new incarnation includes three large-scale festivals, including one right on the beach in Atlantic City. Many of the festival’s most influential alumni will be playing, including 311, Andrew W.K., Bad Religion, Bowling For Soup, Blink-182, Glassjaw, Good Charlotte, Less Than Jake, The Offspring, Reel Big Fish, Shiragirl, Taking Back Sunday, Thrice, The Starting Line, We The Kings and more. 7.       Great South Bay Music Festival: Long Island’s biggest bay side festival is back for another year. The Great South Bay Music Festival boast four unique days of music paying homage to the island’s musical heritage. Thursday features the return of LI pop-punk darlings Taking Back Sunday to the fest, along with Glassjaw, The Menzingers, Frank Iero and more. Friday gets a more ska-tinged vibe with headlining sets from Sublime with Rome, Slightly Stoopid, Soja and local favorites Oogie Wawa. Saturday features Lotus, Dweezil Zappa, Assembly Of Dust and more, as well as a tribute to Woodstock. Finally, on Sunday War will be celebrating their 50^th anniversary with America and the Edgar Winter Band. This has always been a great festival with good music and a killer vibe. (7/18-7/21)

8.       Woodstock 50 (If It Happens): This year marks the 50^th anniversary of the Woodstock Festival, an event that captured the love & peace movement of the late 1960s. For this special occasion, original co-organizer Michael Lang has put together a festival blending original Woodstock artists and values with today’s biggest artists and initiatives. Some of the artists headlining the bill include The Killers, Miley Cyrus, Santana, Robert Plant, Dead & Company, Chance The Rapper, Greta Van Fleet, Portugal. The Man, Jay-Z, Imagine Dragons, Cage The Elephant, Canned Heat, Hot Tuna and The Zombies. There has been some controversy over the last week as to whether or not this event will actually take place or be completely cancelled. If it doesn’t happen, the Bethel Woods Performing Arts Center, where Woodstock originally took place, will be holding a series of events celebrating the anniversary, including performances from Ringo Starr, Edgar Winter Band, Blood Sweat & Tears, Santana, the Doobie Brothers and John Fogerty. 9.       Afropunk: Since 2005, the Afropunk Festival has been showcasing the alternative side of black culture and music. The New York edition boasts an array of established and up-and-coming artists at the intersection of punk, rock, hip-hop, R&B, blues and jazz. Some of this year’s notable names include Jill Scott, FKA Twigs, Leon Bridges, Kamasi Washington, Gary Clark Jr., Santigold, Toro Y Moi, Nao, Death Grips, Danny Brown and The Suffers. (8/24-8/25)

10.   Electric Zoo: Evolved: One of the biggest electronic music festivals in the world, Electric Zoo returns to Randall’s Island in 2019 with a stellar line-up of today’s hottest DJs. Artists include Armin Van Buuren, Benny Benassi, Skrillex/Boys Noize collaboration Dog Blood, Afrojack, Alison Wonderland, Cash Cash, Kaskade, Zedd, R3hab and more.(8/30-9/1)

Shows to Check Out in New York this Weekend (November 30-December 2, 2018)

New York has one of the most vibrant music scenes in the world. From large venues with nationally touring artists to smaller clubs giving up-and-comers their big breaks, there is never a dull moment. There is usually something going on every night of the week. With the weekend almost here, this is the perfect time to check out just what the music scene has to offer.

There is a lot going on in the New York area this weekend, particularly when it comes to rock shows. Bob Dylan is finishing up his seven show Beacon Theatre run. The Hold Steady and Yo La Tengo have holiday residencies that will be anything but predictable. We also have some big shows from Dave Matthews Band, O.A.R. and Peter Bjorn and John.

Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, loves live music. That’s why we’ve once again compiled a list of our picks for this weekend’s hottest shows in the New York area. Here are eight we know will be worth checking out.

1.       Peter Bjorn and John: Swedish indie rockers Peter Bjorn and John released their new album ‘Darker Days’ last month. The album brought them back to their original style of writing and producing songs themselves. Catch the band promote the album on tour this weekend. Georgi Kay opens tonight’s show, while Talos opens Saturday.  (Friday, Rough Trade; Saturday, Bowery Ballroom)

2.       The Hold Steady: The Hold Steady is in the middle of their third-annual ‘Massive Nights’ holiday run. So far, the band has played their album ‘Stay Positive’ in its entirety, as well as had surprise opening sets from Ted Leo (night one) and Laura Stevenson and Bomb the Music Industry!/Antarctigo Vespucci’s Jeff Rosenstock (night two). Tonight’s opener was reviled earlier today as Bad Moves, but there is still no word yet on who will be opening Saturday’s show. (Friday & Saturday, Brooklyn Bowl)

3.       Bob Dylan: There are only two more shows in Bob Dylan’s epic seven night Beacon Theatre residency! Catch the legendary folk-rock singer/songwriter and Nobel Laureate as he performs some of his most iconic songs (Friday & Saturday, Beacon Theatre)

4.       Dave Matthews Band: Dave Matthews Band released their latest album, ‘Come Tomorrow,’ in June, their first studio effort in six years. The band kicked off a short fall tour behind the album, playing the first of two Madison Square Garden shows last night. The band plays the second sold out show tonight. (Friday, Madison Square Garden)

5.       O.A.R.: O.A.R. is slated to release their new album, ‘The Mighty,’ this spring. In the meantime, the band is out on the road with their ‘Just Like Paradise’ headlining tour with Huntertones and Lumin as openers. (Saturday, St. George Theatre; Sunday, The Paramount)

6.       Jesse Malin: New York punk icon Jesse Malin will be headlining this year’s ‘Rock the Night’ fundraiser, happening this weekend. The event raises money and awareness for Crohn’s and Colitis Research. Also on the bill are Trapper Schoepp and comedians Bill Burr and Dean DelRay. (Saturday, Highline Ballroom)

7.       Yo La Tengo: Yo La Tengo are back for another year of Hanukkah shows. Starting Sunday night (Hanukkah night one) and lasting all eight nights, the band will be playing their hits, music from their new album, ‘There’s a Riot Going On’, and covers. The band also usually has some super secret special guests, so there are sure to be some surprises. Note: All nights are sold out. (Sunday - 12/9, Bowery Ballroom)

8.       Adam Pascal & Anthony Rapp: It has been a little over two decades since Anthony Rapp and Adam Pascal starred in the Broadway production of ‘Rent’ playing Mark Cohen and Roger Davis, respectively. And though the two have moved on to other roles, they have maintained their friendship throughout the years. The two share the stage again this weekend for an intimate show celebrating that friendship. (Sunday, Sony Hall)

Shows to Check Out in New York This Weekend (November 23-25, 2018)

Thanksgiving is over. If you’ve spent all the time with your family and friends you can stand and you’ve had enough of the hoards of people out holiday shopping, perhaps it’s time for a break. Why not celebrate the long holiday weekend by braving the cold and heading out to a live show?

There is a lot going on in the New York area this weekend. Bob Dylan kicks off a seven-night run of shows in the city.  Music icons Art Garfunkel, Arlo Guthrie, Taylor Dayne and Patty Smyth are playing special shows. There are punk and metal shows from The Menzingers, Death From Above, Halestorm and Shilpa Ray. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

1.       Bob Dylan: Legendary folk rocker Bob Dylan released the latest installment of his ‘Bootleg Series’ this month, which includes even more tracks recorded during the ‘Blood on the Tracks’ studio sessions. In support, Dylan embarked on a fall tour, which begins winding down this weekend with seven shows in New York starting tonight and lasting over the next week and a half. (Friday – December 1, Beacon Theatre)

2.       The Menzingers: Punk rockers The Menzingers released two new singles, “Toy Soldiers” and “The Freaks” earlier this year, leading speculation that there could be more new music on the way. The band will be wrapping up its current fall tour this weekend, kicking things off with a show in Brooklyn tonight. Tiny Moving Parts and Daddy Issues open the show. (Friday, Brooklyn Steel)

3.       Death From Above: It has been 16 years since dance rockers Death From Above released their debut EP, ‘Heads Up.’ The Canadian duo have been on tour playing the EP in full. Said tour wraps up this weekend with three east coast shows, starting with Brooklyn tonight. (Friday, Elsewhere)

4.       Art Garfunkel: One half of the duo Simon & Garfunkel, Art Garfunkel has been delighting fans for more than five decades with some of the most iconic songs ever written. Last year, the singer published an autobiography, ‘What Is It All But Luminous.’ Garfunkel plays three intimate shows in the New York / Long Island area this weekend, all of which will most likely focus on his many hits. (Friday, Suffolk Theatre; Sunday & Monday, City Winery)

5.       Arlo Guthrie: In what has become an annual tradition, Arlo Guthrie plays his yearly Thanksgiving concert at Carnegie Hall this weekend. This could be the last time however, as he told Billboard earlier this week that he might be ending it next year. (Saturday, Carnegie Hall)

6.       Halestorm / In This Moment / New Years Day: Three kick-butt female-fronted bands on one stage? Yes please! Halestorm headlines this metal-infused girl power tour, having just released their new album, ‘Vicious,’ this past July. In This Moment and New Years Day, who are both working on new albums, act as main support. (Saturday, Hammerstein Ballroom)

7.       Taylor Dayne & Patty Smyth and Scandal: If metal is not your cup of tea, two of the 1980’s hottest female icons have also joined forces for a fall tour. Pop singer Taylor Dayne and rocker Patty Smyth and Scandel wrap things up this weekend in Staten Island. If you can’t make this show, Dayne kicks off a special Christmas tour on Long Island next week with Peabo Bryson, John Secada and Deniece Williams. (Saturday, St. George Theatre)

8.       Shilpa Ray: A staple of the New York underground scene, Shilpa Ray has been compared to early punk legends like Blondie and Patti Smith. She plays a special Thanksgiving show this weekend benefiting the Mount Sinai SAVI Program. Other artists on the bill include NO ICE, Crazy Pills, Painted Zeroes and Joanna Sternberg. Lance Bass and the Pop 2000 Tour will be bringing the early 2000s nostalgia to Long Island. We have shows from veteran bands like Toto, Kansas, The Wailers and The Doobie Brothers. 1.       O-Town / Ryan Cabrera / Lance Bass: 2000’s night comes to Mulcahy’s in style this week as the Pop 2000 Tour rolls in. Hosted by *NSYNC’s Lance Bass, the tour features television boy band O-Town and singer Ryan Cabrera, as well as boy band tribute Larger Than Life to cover all your other boy band needs. If you grew up in the late 1990s/early 2000s, this will be one nostalgia-filled night to give you the feels all over again. (Friday, Mulcahy’s)

2.       Silverstein: It has been 15 years since pop-punk / “screamo” band Silverstein released their debut album, ‘When Broken Is Easily Fixed.’ The band is currently on an anniversary tour behind the album, which finds them playing two separate sets a night, one featuring the album in its entirety and the other featuring all their biggest hits and fan favorites. The tour hits Brooklyn tonight with Hawthorne Heights, As Cities Burn and Capstan opening. (Friday, Warsaw)

3.       Toto: With the popularity of Weezer’s cover of their classic hit “Africa,” Toto has enjoyed a few extra minutes in the spotlight. The band recently released a new greatest hits album called  ‘40 Trips Around the Sun’ for their 40^th anniversary and are currently on a world tour of the same name. Said tour makes its way to Long Island tonight. (Friday, Tilles Center)

4.       Kansas: Kansas is celebrating the 40^th anniversary of their best-selling album ‘Point of Know Return’ this year with a US tour where the band will be playing the album from front to back. The show will also feature a set of classics from the band’s more than four decade career, including deep cuts they may never have played live before. (Friday, The Paramount Huntington)

5.       Jack White: Singer, guitarist and former White Stripes frontman Jack White released his third solo album, ‘Boarding House Reach,’ this past March. White is currently finishing up the ‘Boarding House Reach’ tour this week with two of the four remaining shows happening in New York this weekend. Saturday’s show is sold out, but there are still some tickets for tonight’s performance. Nude Party act as direct support for all shows. (Friday & Saturday, Kings Theatre)

6.       The Suffers: Texas soul-rock band The Suffers returned with their sophomore album, ‘Everything Here,’ this past summer. The band’s soulful sound and big stage presence rival that of more well-known bands like the Alabama Shakes. Get in on the ground floor and check them out this weekend in Brooklyn. (Saturday, Rough Trade)

7.       Pixies: Over the last year, the Pixies have been playing special shows in celebration of the band’s debut album, ‘Surfer Rosa,’ turning 30. Having already done runs in London and Mexico City, its New York’s turn. The band will be playing the album, as well as its EP predecessor ‘Come On Pilgrim,’ at three intimate shows in Brooklyn, interspersing them with more songs “from the time period that are not on the anniversary release.” (Sunday - Tuesday, Brooklyn Steel)

8.       The Wailers: Bob Marley’s legendary backing band The Wailers brings the good vibes to Long Island this weekend. The band will be playing some of Marley’s classic hits as well as their own tunes. Openers include The Zebulonites, Aqua Cherry, Linus Flax and DJ Easeback. (Sunday, Mulcahy’s)

9.       Cute Is What We Aim for: Following a stint in rehab earlier this year for frontman Shaant Hacikyan, Cute Is What We Aim for is back on tour. Relive the early 2000s pop-punk / “emo” days this weekend when the band headlines the Knitting Factory in Brooklyn. MAKEOUT, Minshara and Brightside open the show. (Sunday, Knitting Factory)

10.   Josh Groban: After focusing on acting for a few years, vocalist Josh Groban is back with a new album, ‘Bridges,’ released in September. It’s his first album of original songs in five years. Catch the “You Raise Me Up” singer this weekend as his ‘Bridges’ tour brings comes through New York. (Sunday, Madison Square Garden)

Live Shows to Check Out in New York This Weekend (November 9-11, 2018)

The New York music scene is one of the most vibrant in the world. Filled with amazing live shows every night of the week, there is never a dull moment.

This weekend is no exception, as a handful of big name artists are heading our way. Elton John and Billy Joel will both be playing big arena shows. Metal is well represented on Long Island with shows from Skid Row and Vixen. There are also some smaller-scale yet still hot shows from the likes of John Nolan and Toro Y Moi.

Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, loves live music. That’s why we’ve once again compiled a list of some of the hottest shows happening in the New York area this weekend. Here are seven shows worth checking out.

1.       Elton John: Elton John’s ‘Farewell Yellow Brick Road’ tour returns to New York tonight. This is the fifth of his 11 sold-out area shows. Hear the singer’s biggest hits and crowd favorites (at least) one last time before he retires from touring. (Friday, Madison Square Garden)

2.       John Nolan: Following his induction into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame yesterday with his band Taking Back Sunday, guitarist John Nolan is heading off on a solo tour behind his newly released third solo album, ‘Abendigo.’ Joining him on tour are Heavy Vessel and Destry, which features Nolan’s sister and former Straylight Run bandmate Michelle Da Rosa. (Friday, Union Pool)

3.       Billy Joel: If Elton John wasn’t enough piano rock for you, Billy Joel takes over Madison Square Garden just one night later. The 58^th show of his residency, Joel is still selling out the famed arena month after month. (Saturday, Madison Square Garden)

4.       Skid Row: New Jersey metal band Skid Row is currently at work on the third and final installment of the ‘United World Rebellion’ album trilogy, their first album to feature new vocalist ZP Theart, due for release some time next year. Until then, catch the band on Long Island this weekend for a high-energy show sure to melt some faces. (Saturday, The Paramount)

5.       In Dreams - Roy Orbison: Roy Orbison is the latest artist to be getting the hologram tour treatment. ‘In Dreams – Live In Concert’ will feature a live orchestra backing up a laser-projected recreation of Orbison. Julian Frampton (not a hologram) opens the show. (Saturday, Tilles Center)

6.       Vixen: All-female metal band Vixen released a live album this past July culled from their 2017 tour. See them live for yourself as the band plays a short run of east coast shows this weekend, including a stop on Long Island this Saturday. (Saturday, Space at Westbury)

7.       Toro Y Moi: Synth-pop / chillwave artist Toro Y Moi recently announced that he will be releasing a new album, ‘Outer Peace,’ next year, a follow-up to last year’s well received ‘Boo Boo.’ Of the album, he said in a press release (reported by Pitchfork) “this record is a response to how disposable culture has become and how it affects creativity.” The artist plays two sold-out shows in Brooklyn this weekend, as well as a late-night DJ set on Saturday. (Saturday & Sunday, Elsewhere)

Shows to Check out in New York This Weekend (November 2-4, 2018)

The weekend is almost here! In just a few short hours it will be time to unwind from the stresses of the week. What better way to do that than to head out to a live show.

As always, there are a lot of shows going on in the New York and Long Island area this weekend. Legends George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic, and Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes have shows in Manhattan this weekend, as will Cypress Hill, who will be continuing their annual Halloween show tradition. Tenacious D will be around all weekend celebrating their new album. There will also be some great rock and pop punk shows this weekend from the likes of Antarctigo Vespucci, The Wonder Years, PVMNTS and WSTR.

1.       George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic: After remaining dormant on the recording front for nearly four decades, George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic released a new album this past May. Catch the group playing songs from the new album, as well as a myriad of funky hits, tonight. (Friday, Sony Hall)

2.       Tenacious D: Comedic metal band Tenacious D has a new album and completed web series out today. Tonight the duo of Jack Black and Kyle Gass will be celebrating the occasion with a Q&A session, as well as a double showing of the web series. Then on Saturday and Sunday, the guys kick off their US tour with two nights in Brooklyn. (Friday, Alamo Drafthouse; Saturday & Sunday, Kings Theatre)

3.       Cypress Hill: If you want a little more Halloween fun post-Halloween, Cypress Hill will be bringing their annual Haunted Hill show to Brooklyn tonight. Opening the show will be NYHC vets Madball. (Friday, Warsaw)

4.       Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes: Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes have been around the New York/New Jersey music scene for more than four decades. In that time, these guys have really gotten to know what their audience wants. The result is a fun show with audience banter and some great hits. (Saturday, Sony Hall)

5.       Antarctigo Vespucci: Indie-rock super duo Antarctigo Vespucci released their new album, ‘Love In the Time of E-mail,’ last week. Catch the band on tour behind the album this weekend. Katie Ellen and Gobbinjr open the show. (Sunday, Music Hall of Williamsburg)

6.       The Wonder Years: Pop-punk rockers The Wonder Years have been upping their game a lot over the past 13 years. Their latest album, ‘Sister Cities,’ has some of the band’s most worldly songs, expanding on the sound they’ve been honing for more than a decade. Have Mercy, Oso Oso and Shortly join the band as support. (Sunday, Paramount Huntington)

7.       PVMNTS / WSTR: Pop-punk bands PVMNTS and WSTR have both had break out years in 2018. PVMNTS, which features ‘Teen Wolf’ star Tyler Posey as frontman, released their debut EP reminiscent of the genre in the mid-2000s. WSTR, who released their second full length this year, have a harder edge to their music, though the lyrics and sentiment seem very tongue-in-cheek. Together, this should be a great show. (Sunday, Gramercy Theatre)

Shows to Check Out in New York This Weekend (October 26-28, 2018)

The New York music scene is filled with amazing music every night of the week. From big name artists passing through the area to smaller artists playing the small clubs that are the heart of the scene, there is never a dull moment. And with the weekend just a few short hours away, this is the perfect time to see what the New York music scene has to offer.

This weekend, the New York area will be jam-packed with big shows. Twenty One Pilots, Nick Cave and Marc Anthony all have arena tours converging on the area over the next three days. You have punk and rock shows from the likes of the Descendents, Screaming Females, Clutch, Sevendust, They Might Be Giants and the Violent Femmes. Garbage is celebrating 20 years of their sophomore album. Big D and the Kids Table are playing a special Halloween show. Minus the Bear’s farewell tour will be making a couple of stops in the area as well. Classic rockers like Air Supply and ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons are in town, as is Billy Joel who will be playing another show in his record-breaking Madison Square Garden run. You also have some shows from local up-and-comers like Two Feet and The Fuzz.

1.       Descendents: You can’t go wrong with checking out one of the west coast’s most revered hardcore punk bands. The Descendents are back together and released their first full-length album in 12 years, ‘Hypercaffium Spazzinate,’ in 2016. Teenage Bottlerocket and Ruth Ruth open the show. (Friday, Playstation Theater)

2.       Big D & the Kids Table: If you’re in the mood for some ska, Big D and the Kids Table will be in town for a special Halloween show tonight. Dubbed “A Nightmare Before Halloween,” the show will also feature Bigwig and The Creepshow as openers. (Friday, Brooklyn Bazaar)

3.       The Fuzz: New Jersey rockers The Fuzz are a band not to be missed. Frontwoman Chevonne, who has competed on ‘The Voice’ and sung back-up for Lady Gaga, commands the stage, serving up an intensely energetic show. (Friday, Rockwood Music Hall Stage 1)

4.       Clutch & Sevendust: Heavy rock band Clutch released their 12^th studio album, ‘Book of Bad Decisions,’ last month to rave reviews from critics. The band teams up with fellow hard rockers Sevendust, whose new album, ‘All I See Is War,’ also came out earlier this year, for a North American tour. The tour wraps up in New York this weekend with two shows at Irving Plaza, of which the Saturday show is sold out. (Friday & Saturday, Irving Plaza)

5.       Twenty One Pilots: Twenty One Pilots have become one of the biggest bands in the world over the last few years, breaking the normal genre boundaries to create a sound all their own. Their latest album, ‘Trench,’ has been garnering praise from both critics and fans, who have turned it into the band’s best-selling album so far. Twenty One Pilots is in the middle of their worldwide ‘Bandito’ tour, which hits Long Island this weekend and NYC’s Madison Square Garden on Tuesday. (Saturday, Nassau Coliseum)

6.       They Might Be Giants: They Might Be Giants are bringing their ‘An Evening with TMBG’ show to New York this weekend. As stated on their website, this is a brand new show with two sets per night featuring hits and fan favorites from their albums, including from their latest release, ‘I Like Fun.’ Also mentioned is a “show within a show” called Quiet Storm that boasts new arrangements for songs with a quiet and stormy twist. (Saturday, Terminal 5)

7.       Garbage: This year marks the 20^th anniversary of alt-rock band Garbage’s iconic second album, ‘Version 2.0.’ To celebrate, the band is released a 20^th anniversary edition of the album, as well as embarked on a nationwide tour. The US dates of that tour wrap up in New York this weekend. (Saturday, Kings Theatre)

8.       Two Feet: Electronic artist and singer Two Feet’s slow tempo’d break out single “I Feel Like I’m Drowning” has been all over alternative radio this year. The song comes from his debut full-length, ‘A 20 Something F***,’ released earlier this month, which has been getting positive reviews from critics. Catch him in New York this weekend before he hops on tour with Panic! At The Disco in the New Year. (Saturday, Brooklyn Steel)

9.       Minus the Bear: Over the summer, indie rockers Minus the Bear called it quits after nearly 17 years together. To give their fans a proper goodbye and to promote their final EP, ‘Fair Enough,’ the band has embarked on a North American farewell tour that hits the New York area this weekend. According to the band’s website, they will be “digging deep” into their back catalog, so you might even hear some songs they never play. (Sunday & Monday, Irving Plaza)

10.   Marc Anthony: One of the biggest names in Latin music, Marc Anthony has sold millions of albums over the course of his more than three decade career. His latest single, “Esta Rico,” featuring Will Smith and Bad Bunny, earned the singer another top 10 hit on the Latin charts in the US. Anthony brings his Legacy tour to New York this weekend, aiming to get you out of your seat and dancing in the aisles. (Sunday, Madison Square Garden)

11.   Billy F Gibbons: ZZ Top frontman Billy F Gibbons dug deep into his blues roots this year for his second solo album, ‘The Big Bad Blues,’ released this past September. Hear the rocker in a new light when his ‘Big Bad Blues’ tour hits Long Island this weekend and NYC’s Iridium Jazz Club on Tuesday and Wednesday. (Sunday, Paramount Huntington)

Shows to Check Out in New York this Weekend (October 19-21, 2018)

The weekend is almost here. In just a few short hours, it’ll be time to take a break from the work week and have some fun. If you’re still not sure what to do, why not rock out at a live show.

There is a lot going on in terms of live music in New York this weekend. Elton John makes his first of eight stops in New York before he says goodbye to touring. Steely Dan continues its nine-night residency at the Beacon Theatre. Pop singers Jessie J, Lily Allen and Elle King are all in town, as is breakout boy band Brockhampton. In rock, Bouncing Souls, Guided by Voices, Psychedelic Furs and Stabbing Westward are all playing shows in the area this weekend. And that’s just the beginning.

1.       Elton John: Elton John may be retiring, but not without a proper goodbye first. The artist’s Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour will be making its first of eight stops in the New York area tonight. Tonight’s show, like most of the other New York dates, is sold out, though you may be able to catch him next year on Long Island. His Nassau Coliseum date on November 16, 2019 goes on sale today. 2.       Bouncing Souls & Swingin’ Utters: Check out some melodic punk from two of the genre’s heaviest hitters, The Bouncing Souls and the Swingin’ Utters. The bands kick off a three date string of east coast shows tonight with a concert cruise along the Hudson. The show is sold out, though the Bouncing Souls will be back in December, this time on land. (Friday, Rocks Off Cruise)

3.       Arlo Guthrie: Folk rocker Arlo Guthrie will be celebrating one of his most requested songs, “Alice’s Restaurant,” on tour this time around. The ‘Alice’s Restaurant – Back By Popular Demand’ tour hits Long Island tonight with his daughter Sarah Lee Guthrie opening. If you can’t catch him tonight, Guthrie will be back in NYC on November 24 at Carnegie Hall for his annual Thanksgiving show. (Friday Theatre at Westbury)

4.       Jessie J: Pop singer Jessie J did some growing up with the recording of her latest album, ‘R.O.S.E.’ The album, which was released earlier this year, shows a different, less pop-y side to her sound. Check out the new Jessie J when her tour hits New York tonight.  (Friday, Hammerstein Ballroom)

5.       Lily Allen: Lily Allen has been busy over the last year. In the span of a year she released both a personal new album, ‘No Shame,’ and a brutally honest memoir, ‘My Thoughts Exactly.’ Allen will be bringing her new, no-holds-barred attitude to New York this weekend when her No Shame USA Tour comes through. (Saturday, Terminal 5)

6.       Stabbing Westward: Stabbing Westward’s third album, ‘Darkest Days,’ turned 20 this year. To celebrate, the recently reunited industrial rockers will be heading out on tour, where they will play the album in full. (Saturday, Gramercy Theatre)

7.       Guided by Voices: Ever since reuniting in 2016, Guided by Voices has been very busy recording. Not only have they released four albums in the last three years (the latest of which being this year’s ‘Space Gun,’ the band’s 25^th overall), but they have three more in the works to bring them through 2020. Catch these prolific indie-rockers with openers Park Doing at their sold out show in New York this weekend. (Saturday, Bowery Ballroom)

8.       Psychedelic Furs: Though they may not have released any new music in more than two decades, The Psychedelic Furs are just as popular as ever. In the last year alone the band’s music was heard on both popular Netflix series ‘Stranger Things’ and the award nominated film ‘Call Me By Your Name.’ Refresh yourself on the rest of the band’s catalog when their fall tour hits Staten Island this weekend. (Saturday, St. George Theatre)

9.       Steely Dan: Steely Dan kicked off another of their Beacon Theatre residencies yesterday and will be continuing on through October 30. Catch the band (which, following Walter Becker’s passing last year, features Donald Fagen as the only original member)performing their classic albums in their entirety, as well as a second set of hits and fan favorites. (Saturday – 10/30, Beacon Theatre)

10.   Elle King: Best known for her 2015 single “Ex’s and Oh’s,” Elle King has made a name for herself playing bluesy pop rock with an edge. Her sophomore album, ‘Shake the Spirit,’ hits shelves today. Catch King playing an intimate show this weekend in her home borough of Brooklyn. (Sunday, Rough Trade)

11.   Brockhampton: Boy Band Brockhampton have been one of the biggest groups to break this year. Their fourth studio album, ‘Iridescence,’ released last month, skyrocketed to number one on the Billboard 200 chart in its first week. The group will be bringing their mix of hip-hop, R&B and pop to New York this weekend as part of their ‘I’ll Be There’ tour. (Sunday & Monday, Terminal 5)

12.   Tower of Power & Average White Band: To celebrate their 50^th anniversary this year, Tower of Power released their first album of new music in almost a decade, ‘Soul Side of Town,’ in June. The band teams up with fellow soul rockers Average White Band, who released their first album with new material in 15 years this past February, for an epic nostalgia tour sure to leave you dancing in the aisles. (Sunday, Tilles Center)
