Week in Review: New Songs / Music Videos You Need to Check Out (May 27-June 2, 2018)

It can be hard to keep track of all the new songs and music videos that come out in a given week. It’s understandable, I mean, life gets hectic and there just isn’t enough time. However, with the weekend here, now is the perfect chance to catch up on all the new music released over the last seven days.

This week saw a lot of high-profile artists releasing new songs and videos. Maroon 5 and Kesha both released new videos this week from their latest releases. Gorillaz, who announced their upcoming album ‘The Now Now’ this week, released a new single to go with it, as did The 1975, who announced two new albums. The week also saw some impressive country singles from the likes of Dierks Bentley and Dan + Shay. As for rock, we got new videos from the likes of Good Charlotte, Johnny Marr, Oh, Weatherly and This Wild Life, as well as new songs from Jim James, Dee Snider, The Wonder Years and Scars on Broadway.

Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, loves new music. That’s why we’ve once again been scouring the internet for the week’s hottest new songs and music videos. Here are seven of our favorites that we think will be worth checking out.

1.       Dierks Bentley feat. Brothers Osbourne, “Burning Man”: Country artist Dierks Bentley released the inspirational video for his new single “Burning Man” this week. The song hits hard with its galloping pace and self-reflective lyrics. For the video, Bentley introduces the viewer to a man who had a heart attack at age 25 and his inspirational story about how he turned his life around. Such gives the song a second, equally pronounced meaning, one of being able to change one’s life but not their fighting spirit. (video)

2.       Maroon 5, “Girls Like You”: With virtually staccato pacing and fairly minimal instrumentals, “Girls Like You” comes off focusing almost entirely on the lyrics. The pounding beat highlights everything that frontman Adam Levine sings, adding a bit of bounce and danceability to it. I don’t feel like Cardi B’s verse was quite necessary, but it doesn’t hurt it either. In fact, the song comes in and out of it pretty smoothly. (video)

3.       Dan + Shay, “Alone Together”: Yet another fantastic song from Dan + Shay’s upcoming self-titled album, “Alone Together” is an upbeat pop-country track that will have to tapping your toes to the beat. These guys know how to write a good love song with lyrics that are swoon-worthy. (video)

4.       Gorillaz, “Humanity”: The first single from Gorillaz just announced new album ‘The Now Now,’ “Humility” finds the band returning to a more structured sound. Electric guitars and island-like percussion loops drives the song’s easy, laidback tempo. Such gives it a summer time, breezy feel, perfect for laying out on the beach soaking up some sun. (video)

5.       Good Charlotte, “Actual Pain”: The official video for “Actual Pain” was released this week and it’s almost as heart-breaking as the song itself. Telling the story of a mother and her son, the video first shows us the kind of relationship the two have and enjoying each other’s company. By the middle, however, we see the mother in a deep depression, virtually immobile on the bed and her son trying to get her out of it. She snaps at him, which then tears the two of them apart. It paints a good picture of the effects of depression and mental illness and how it doesn’t affect just the one depressed, but the family as well. (video)

6.       This Wild Life, “Catie Rae”: “Catie Rae” has a sweet, simple melody that is guaranteed to make you smile…or at least hum along. The acoustic guitar and ukulele combo drives home this feeling while the orchestral interlude near the end adds another layer to the first love / only love story it tells. (video)

7.       The 1975, “Give Yourself A Try”: The 1975’s latest single “Give Yourself A Try” is very conversational in tone, finding frontman Matt Healy imparting his millennial wisdom on the younger generation, telling them to lighten up and take a chance on themselves. The lyrics are supported by fast guitars that keep the song’s early 2000’s alt-rock vibe moving along at a staggering pace. (video)

The weekend is a great time to catch up on some of the new songs and videos you may have missed during the week. Check out some of our favorites above and kick your weekend off right with some new music.
