New York has a one-of-a-kind music scene that demands to be
heard. From New York City to Long Island, there are live shows happening every
night of the week. With the weekend just around the corner, now is a great time
to indulge in one of the many concerts and tours that pepper the area nightly.
This weekend will see no shortage of amazing live shows
coming to the New York area. The Northside Festival, now in its 10th
year, continues its take over northern Brooklyn. Forest Hills Stadium kicks off
its summer line-up with indie darlings Belle & Sebastian, Perfume Genius,
Frankie Cosmos, Nathaniel Rateliff and The Head and the Heart are all playing
Queens this weekend. Fans of 1990s nostalgia will have the chance to see Dru
Hill, the Gin Blossoms, Tonic and Vertical Horizon. This weekend will also see
big shows from stadium rockers U2 and metal greats Blue Oyster Cult.
Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, loves live music.
That’s why we’ve compiled a list of some of this weekend’s hottest shows
happening in the New York area. From rock and pop to R&B, here are seven
shows we know you won’t want to miss.
1.
Northside Festival: Through panel discussions on
technological innovation and nightly showcases with top artists from around the
world, the Northside Festival has been bringing the best of music and
innovation to Brooklyn for the last 10 years. This year’s festival kicked off
on Wednesday, but there’s still a lot of great music still coming up this
weekend. Highlights still to come include Have Mercy, Deerhoof, Protomartyr, Parquet
Courts and Mama Juke, as well as the yearly weekend-long block party on Bedford
Avenue with live music and art installations. (Friday-Sunday, Various Venues)
2.
Belle & Sebastian / Perfume Genius / Frankie
Cosmos: Belle & Sebastian hopes to help people solve their problems as
their US tour rolls through Queens tonight. Their latest trio of EPs, ‘How to
Solve Our Human Problems’ Parts I, II and III, were released earlier this year.
The Scottish indie-rockers will be joined by Perfume Genius, who released the
critically praised ‘No Shape’ last year, and Frankie Cosmos, who released her
critically praised third album ‘Vessel’ in March. (Friday, Forest Hills Stadium)
3.
Blue
Oyster Cult: Long Island metal pioneers Blue Oyster Cult have had a
prolific career, releasing 13 studio albums over the last five decades. With rumors
of their first album of new music in 16 years looming large, the band is currently
out on the road playing their biggest hits. (Friday, Space at Westbury)
4.
Dru Hill: Sisqo and the whole Dru Hill gang are
back to bring that sweet 1990s R&B nostalgia to the masses. Their second
album, ‘Enter The Dru,’ turned 20 this year, so this will obviously be a
special show. (Friday, Sony Hall)
5.
Nathaniel
Rateliff & the Nightsweats / The Head and the Heart: Nathaniel Rateliff
released his second album with backing band The Night Sweats, ‘Tearing At The
Seams,’ this past March, hitting number one on the Americana / Folk chart and
number 11 on the Billboard 200 chart during its first sales week. The band
wraps up their tour with fellow folk rockers The Head and the Heart in Queens
this weekend before heading to Europe next month. (Saturday, Forest Hills
Stadium)
6.
U2:
U2 recently earned the record for having a number one album in each of the last
four decades when their latest album, ‘Songs of Experience,’ dropped this past
December. The band brings their massive “Experience + Innocence” arena tour to
Long Island this weekend, with more New York dates to come later in the month. (Saturday,
Nassau Coliseum)
7.
Gin
Blossoms / Tonic / Vertical Horizon: With 1990s nostalgia package tours
being all the rage, the combination of alt-rock heavyweights Gin Blossoms,
Tonic and Vertical Horizon seems too good to pass up. While you’ll probably
hear some new stuff, as Gin Blossoms are getting ready to release a new album
next week and Vertical Horizon released one in February, there is no doubt that
the night will be focused on the hits. (Sunday, Paramount Huntington)
New York’s bustling music scene is something to be
experienced and this weekend will give you a great chance to do just that.
Check out some of the shows above or any of the smaller shows happening around
the area and spend your weekend rocking out.
