Week In Review: New Songs / Music Videos You Need to Check Out (January 28-February 3, 2018)

It’s finally the weekend! Time to sit back, relax and catch up on all the new music you may have missed during this very busy week.

Rock and pop were very prominent in new music this week. Justin Timberlake released two new singles just days ahead of the release of his brand new album. P!nk released a powerful new video for a powerful song from her latest album, as did Halsey and rock bands Story of the Year and Incubus. Stone Temple Pilots continued to tease their comeback album with a second single. Both Frank Turner and Korn frontman Jonathan Davis released singles to accompany the announcement of their respective new albums.

Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, has once again been keeping track of the best new songs and music videos released over the past week. Here are seven that we think will be worth taking the time to  check out.

1.       Stone Temple Pilots, “Roll Me Under”: Along with further details about their upcoming self-titled album, Stone Temple Pilots have released another new single this week. “Roll Me Under” is a pretty straightforward rock track. Jeff Gutt’s gritty vocals complement the even grittier guitars well. (video)

2.       Poets of the Fall, “False Kings”: “False Kings” has this heavy, beautiful rock track. It’s slow tempo and pacing give it a haunting feeling that’s only aided by frontman Marco Saaresto’s strong, clear vocals that are as smooth as molasses. (video)

3.       Frank Turner, “1933”: British “punk poet” Frank Turner announced a new album this week with the release of a new single, “1933.” The song is a political rant that American Songwriter reports was written out of anger over the connections being made between punk rock and the alt-right. It’s catchy and aggressive tone give the song a sense of power and immediacy. (video)

4.       Jonathan Davis, “What It Is”: Korn frontman Jonathan Davis gave the world a taste of his upcoming debut solo album this week with the release of first single “What It Is.” Still dark and dramatic, “What It Is” trades heavy, nu metal guitars and guttural singing for a sound more melodic sound than your typical Korn song. This is probably what it would sound like if a Korn song were made up of only its chorus. (video)

5.       Story of the Year, “Praying For Rain”: There is something about “Praying For Rain” that doesn’t feel like your typical Story of the Year song. Its melody has a certain clarity that make its lyrics also seem clearer, more emotional and more direct. (video)

6.       P!nk, “Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken”: P!nk premiered her latest single, “Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken” live at the Grammys on Sunday, followed by a no frills video for it the next day. The piano-driven track makes an honest and powerful statement about not giving up and fighting for what is right. P!nk’s passionate and bold vocals shine on songs like this. And that she left the video and her Grammy performances so muted make the words and power of the song so much stronger. (video)

7.       Justin Timberlake, “Say Something” & “Man of the Woods”: Justin Timberlake released two new singles this week, title track “Man of the Woods” and Chris Stapleton collaboration “Say Something,” leading up to the full release of his new album yesterday. Both tracks are much more palatable than the previous two, which makes me think the album might not only be filled with unintelligible noises. “Say Something” has a great groove with impactful lyrics and pleasant underlying acoustic track. “Man of the Woods” is the kind of muted dance track that you would expect to come from an album that was advertised as being both “down-home southern” and “electronic.” The better video goes to “Man of the Woods” because it humorously tries to convince you that Timberlake is an outdoorsman.
