The weekend is almost here, which means it’s time to put the
finishing touches on your weekend plans. If you’re still not sure how you want
to spend your time to relax and let loose, why not spend your weekend free time
rocking out at a live show.
Even with the Super Bowl this Sunday, there are still plenty
of shows happening in New York to get you moving. The city will be rocking this
weekend with the “traditional” rock ‘n’ roll of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and
the Americana-rock of Jason Isbell, as well as the pop-punk of Neck Deep, Enter
Shikari and The Dangerous Summer. Jools Holland is even making some rare US
appearances this weekend. If reggae is more your style, the CCB All-Stars will
be paying homage to the legendary Bob Marley, while Bad Brains vocalist HR will
be playing a rare solo show.
Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, has once again
been searching for this weekend’s hottest shows in New York. Here are nine shows
that we think will be worth checking out.
1.
Enter Shikari: Enter Shikari put out an
incredible album last year in ‘Sparks,’ which saw the band adding more of an
electronic element to their pull-no-punches pop rock sound. The British band is
currently on the North American leg of their album tour, which features support
from Single Mothers and Milk Teeth. (Friday, Music Hall of Williamsburg)
2.
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club: Black Rebel
Motorcycle Club have been carrying the rock ‘n’ roll torch for nearly two
decades. Last month, the band released their eighth studio album, ‘Wrong
Creatures,’ to decent reviews. The band is currently on tour behind the album,
hitting New York tonight with Night Beats in tow as opener. (Friday, Brooklyn
Steel)
3.
Neck Deep: Pop punk band Neck Deep had a
fantastic year last year, releasing their breakthrough third album ‘The Peace
and the Panic.’ A stunning album with a clear, classic pop-punk sound, it
reached number 4 on the Billboard 200 in the US and went to number one in their
native UK. The band is currently on tour in the US behind the album with
Seaway, Creeper and Speak Low If You Speak Love as support. (Friday,
Playstation Theater) [Sold Out]
4.
HR of Bad Brains: Following last year’s Bad
Brains reunion, frontman HR is playing a few solo shows to start off 2018. The
first show happens tonight in Brooklyn with another scheduled for Bowery
Electric on May 3. Expect a more reggae-tinged set, as that has been the
direction his solo music has been going in lately. (Friday, El Cortez)
5.
The Dangerous Summer: Following a three year
hiatus, The Dangerous Summer regrouped last year (sans guitarist Cody Payne,
who was recently convicted on burglary charges) and released their self-titled
fourth album last Friday. The band is following up the album with a US tour,
which hits New York tonight. Support for the show comes from Microwaves and The
Band Camino. (Friday, Knitting Factory)
6.
Jools
Holland: Former keyboardist for Squeeze
and current host of ‘Later...With Jools Holland,’ Jools Holland has been a
presence in the music sphere for four decades. He released his latest album, ‘As
You See Me Now,’ which he collaborated on with Jose Feliciano, last year.
Holland is currently in the middle of a four-night run of New York shows, his
only US shows scheduled for 2018. (Friday - Sunday, Blue Note)
7.
Jason
Isbell and the 400 Unit: Fresh off their recent Best Americana Album Grammy
win for last year’s outstanding ‘The Nashville Sound,’ Jason Isbell and the 400
Unit continue on their North American tour. The band hits Brooklyn this weekend
for a sold out show, sponsored by WFUV. James McMurtry will open the show. (Saturday,
Kings Theatre) [Sold Out]
8.
CCB Reggae All-Stars: Tuesday marks what would
have been reggae icon Bob
Marley’s 73rd birthday. In honor of the legend, CCB Reggae
All-Stars will be holding their annual Bob Marley Birthday Tribute show at B.B.
King Blues Club. Now in its 22 year, the group will be playing two sets of
classic Marley hits. (Saturday, B.B. King Blues Club)
9.
Rex Orange County: Coming in second on BBC Music’s
Sound of 2018 list, Rex Orange County is one of the hottest up and coming
artists out of the UK. He released his second album, ‘Apricot Princess,’ last
year, impressing critics and fans with his light, easy-going sound. (Sunday,
Music Hall of Williamsburg) [Sold Out]
From rock to reggae to pop-punk, this weekend is looking
like a great weekend for live music in New York. If you’re still looking for
something to do this weekend, check out these or any of the other amazing shows
happening in the area and rock out!
