Yesterday, SpaceX successfully launched their Falcon Heavy
rocket into space. Now deemed the most powerful rocket ever launched by a
private company, the unmanned rocket was sent out to test its ability to deliver
larger cargo into deep space. The payload for this test included leaving behind
a red Tesla Roadster and a spacesuit-wearing mannequin named “the spaceman”
that is currently headed for an asteroid belt past Mars.
Music has often been inspired by outer space. Countless
artists have sung about the stars, space travel, and alien life, using it both
as both story and metaphor. Even Elon Musk thought about the music when
launching Falcon Heavy, who decided to have “Space Oddity” blasting through the
speakers of the Tesla as it floats through space.
In honor of the launch of Falcon Heavy, Vinyl Bay 777, Long
Island’s music outlet, is taking a look at songs inspired by space. Here are
seven tracks destined to bring you to the stars.
1.
Moby, “We Are All Made of Stars”: Everything in the cosmos is made up of what
Carl Sagan referred to as “star stuff.” And since Earth and its life forms are
part of this, technically, we are all made of “star stuff.” “We Are All Made of
Stars” pays homage to this fact that makes everyone and everything related. (video)
2.
David
Bowie, “Space Oddity”: There would be no space songs list without David Bowie’s
“Space Oddity.” Inspired by ‘2001: A Space Odyssey,’ Bowie wrote a very moving,
heart-wrenching song about Major Tom’s ill-fated trip to space. (video)
3.
Elton
John, “Rocket Man”: Inspired by Ray Bradbury’s ‘The Rocket Man,’ Elton John’s
“Rocket Man” tells the story of an astronaut whose solitary life in space has
him questioning why he’s there. Then when he does come home, he seems to be a
different person. (video)
4.
Ludo, “In Space”: “In Space” is a
tongue-in-cheek pop-punk version of “Rocket Man.” It’s a love song about an
astronaut who always wanted to go to space, but now can only think about the
one they left behind on Earth. And atmosphere. (video)
5.
Muse, “Starlight”: Many of Muse’s songs would be
perfect for this list, as space seems to be a running theme for a lot of them,
particularly those on 2006’s ‘Black Holes and Revelations.’ “Starlight” takes
that space analogy further than the others. The song starts off with the
narrator going off in a ship to “chase starlight” only to find that missing his
loved ones isn’t worth it. Learning this lesson is represented by the “black
holes and revelations.” (video)
6.
The
Killers, “Spaceman”: In “Spaceman,” The Killers paint a fairly realistic
story of what it might be like to be abducted by aliens. He remembers the light
beams and being cut open, though people tell him it is all in his head. (video)
7.
Beastie
Boys, “Intergalactic”: Though the song is more about bragging than space,
the Beastie Boys use a lot of space imagery on “Intergalactic” to drive home their
points. Other than the hook of “intergalactic planetary,” most likely used to
boast about their skills, they also make mention of Uranus, alternative
dimensions and galaxies, and even ‘Star Trek’s’ Mr. Spock. (video)
There have been many songs written about outer space, as
well as using space as a metaphor for other feelings, emotions or situations.

songs.
