This week, New York saw its second heat wave of the summer with record high temperatures and humidity making it virtually unbearable to stay outdoors
for extended periods of time. And even though it’s supposed to be a little
cooler in the coming days (if you can call mid-upper 80s “cool”), it still feels
way too hot to function properly.
With the hot weather showing no signs of calming this week,
Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, brings you a list of heat-fueled
songs to match the climbing temperatures outside. Here are six that will leave
you stumbling to turn up the air conditioning.
1.
Buster
Poindexter, “Hot Hot Hot”: This cover by New
York Doll David
Johansen’s pseudonym Buster Poindexter has been the life of the party since
its release in 1987, becoming a hit for parties everywhere. Its calypso flair
made it the perfect song for conga lines and limbo contests. At least you can
dance to it while you’re melting from the “hot hot hot” heat. (video)
2.
Nelly,
“Hot In Herre”: With lyrics that depict a hot, sweaty dance club, the premise
of “Hot In Herre” might not sound like it fits the theme. However, the amount
of sweat being produced by this weather make this song feel pretty apt. Just
don’t “take off all your clothes” in public. (video)
3.
Bananarama,
“Cruel Summer”: Like the song says, “This heat has got right out of hand.” With
air that’s “heavy and dry” and burning pavement, this has definitely been a
grueling, “cruel summer.” (video)
4.
The Lovin’ Spoonful, “Summer In The City”: These
lyrics sum it up pretty well: “All around, people looking half dead / Walking
on the sidewalk, hotter than a match head.” The heat is so oppressively draining
that even just walking around is tiring. Like the song says, best to head out
at night to have some fun when it’s cooler. (video)
5.
Ella
Fitzgerald, “Too Darn Hot”: When the weather is too hot, you don’t feel
like doing anything. This classic jazz track, originally written by Cole Porter
for ‘Kiss Me, Kate’ and popularized by Ella Fitzgerald, knows that all too
well. The lyrics declare that it is even too hot for love. (video)
6.
Santana
feat. Rob
Thomas, “Smooth”: While not really about hot weather, the opening lines “man
it’s a hot one / like seven inches from the midday sun” seemed all too familiar
over the last few days. The song’s steamy Latin melody doesn’t do anything for
the heat factor of the song either. At least Rob Thomas has his girl to keep
him cool. (video)
With the wave of sizzling heat we’ve been subjected to the
last few days, it has felt brutal outside. But there are songs that know your
pain. Commiserate with the songs above and let us know which hot weather songs
you love in the comments below.
