Live Shows in New York This Weekend (August 10-12, 2018)

Another week is almost over, which means the weekend is just around the corner. If you’re still looking for something to do with your time off, why not check out a live show?

The New York-area music scene is buzzing this weekend with amazing live music. Shakira’s long awaited ‘El Dorado’ tour will be hitting the city, as will the second half of Evanescence’s ‘Synthesis’ tour. Punk fans will have a chance to catch Pennywise and Sick Of It All this weekend. In terms of metal, Black Label Society will be in town to melt some faces. If you don’t have a lot of money, The Breeders and Gary Clark Jr. are both playing their own respective free shows while Americanafest NYC will be bringing even more talent to the city for free.

Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, loves live music. That’s why we’ve once again compiled a list of our top pick live shows happening in the New York area this weekend. Here are eight that we think will be worth checking out.

1.       Gary Clark Jr.: Enjoy the summer sun out east with a free show from blues-rock guitarist Gary Clark Jr. Get ready for an intimate night of soulful music before Clark’s fall tour, where you can catch him in October playing with Eric Clapton at Madison Square Garden. (Friday, Surf Lodge Montauk)

2.       Black Label Society: This past January, Black Label Society celebrated their 20th anniversary as a band by releasing their 10th studio album, ‘Grimmest Hits.’ The album has been doing very well on the rock charts, debuting at number one on the Hard Rock and Independent Charts. Black Label Society play two shows this weekend, including a show on Long Island with Corrosion of Conformity and Eyehategod as openers at The Paramount tonight, before frontman Zakk Wylde heads out on tour with Ozzy Osbourne later this month. (Friday, Paramount Huntington)

3.       Pennywise, Sick Of It All: House of Vans is going back to their punk roots for tonight’s House Party show, one of the last before the venue closes at the end of the month. Following their stint on the final Vans Warped Tour (and closing out the final date with a spirited version of “Bro Hymn.” There’s video of it, its fantastic.), California punk legends Pennywise will be taking the House of Vans stage. Their latest album, ‘Never Gonna Die,’ came out this past April, their first in nearly a decade. The band has tapped local hardcore vets Sick Of It All to open the show, so you know that there will be some serious moshing going on. Unfortunately, the RSVP period for this free show is now closed, but for those who have already done so, get there early because you won’t want to miss it. (Friday, House Of Vans)

4.       Shakira: Latin pop powerhouse Shakira’s latest album, ‘El Dorado,’ was one of the highest-grossing Latin albums of 2017, topping sales charts, going nine-times platinum in the United States and earning a handful of Grammy and Billboard Awards. Now, you can catch her live as her El Dorado World Tour finally hits New York tonight. (Friday, Madison Square Garden)

5.       The Breeders: Earlier this year, The Breeders released their fifth studio album, ‘All Nerve,’ their first album of new music in a decade and first album with their “Last Splash” line-up in more than two decades. A full tour behind the album was announced this week, with the closest New York City date being at The Stone Pony in New Jersey on October 24. Thankfully, the band plays a free show as part of Celebrate Brooklyn this weekend, the final free show for the season. (Saturday, Celebrate Brooklyn)

6.       Americanafest NYC: This weekend Lincoln Center Out of Doors will play host to some of the biggest Americana Artists out there for the fifth annual AmericanaFest NYC. Saturday will feature performances from Joe Henry and the legendary Mavis Staples. Then on Sunday, up-and-coming country singer Margo Price and Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real will take the stage. The whole event is free, so all you have to do is show up. (Saturday & Sunday, Lincoln Center)

7.       Evanescence, Lindsey Stirling: Last year, rockers Evanescence released their first album in six years, ‘Synthesis,’ which found the band reworking pieces of their back catalog into classical/electronic arrangements. The band is currently on the second US leg of the Synthesis tour, which includes a full orchestra backing them up. Violinist Lindsey Stirling, who contributed to Evanescence’s track “Hi-Lo,” will be joining them as support for this leg of the tour, which makes a stop on Long Island this weekend. (Saturday, Jones Beach Theater)

8.       PVMNTS, Lost In Society, Neverkept: California pop-punkers PVMNTS are getting ready to release their debut EP this month and will be celebrating with an EP release show in Brooklyn this weekend. Featuring actor Tyler Posey (‘Teen Wolf’)on vocals, bass and guitar, Freddy Ramirez on vocals, guitar and bass and Nick Guzman on drums, this is the band’s first east coast performance, so it is sure to be a special occasion. Opening the show will be fellow punk rockers Lost In Society and Neverkept. (Sunday, Knitting Factory Brooklyn)

There are a lot of big shows in rock and pop happening in the New York area this weekend. Check out some of our live show picks above or any of the many other smaller shows happening around the area and spend your free time rocking out.
