Spring Equinox: Songs that Feel Like Spring

Today marks the first day of spring in the U.S., a time usually marked not only by longer days ahead, but by the reemergence of plant life and the promise of non-freezing weather. After the late season snow the east coast has been pounded with over the last few weeks (with more to come in the forecast), just the thought of spring coming is enough to warrant a sense of excitement. What better way to expand on that feeling of light and renewal than by listening to some tunes to get you into the spring mindset.

What makes a good spring song isn’t necessarily the lyrics being about spring itself, but the feeling it gives you when you listen to it. A spring song should leave you feeling happy. It should be able to transport you somewhere where the sun is shining on you and the flowers are about to bloom.

Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, can’t wait for spring to arrive! That’s why we’ve compiled a list of some of our favorite songs with that spring day feel. Here are seven songs that will have you feeling the happiness and renewal of the season.

1.       U2, “Beautiful Day”: Released in 2000, “Beautiful Day” perfectly captures the mindset of stepping out your front door and seeing nothing but blue skies. The song begs you not to let good days “get away” in the most clarion, euphoric way possible. (video)

2.       The Polyphonic Spree, “Light and Day”: Usually songs about letting the sun in are more for the summer than the spring. However, “Light and Day” delivers that burst of excitement that can only come from going outside and “greeting” the new day, which definitely feels like the thing to do on the first day of spring. 3.       Johnny Nash, “I Can See Clearly Now”: “I Can See Clearly Now” is one of those songs that you can’t help smiling when you hear it. Its lyrical content is pretty straight forward, talking about the clarity of thought the singer has once the “rain is gone” and there is nothing holding them back. Many are likely to share in this sentiment once all the snow has melted. (video)

4.       American Authors, “Best Day of My Life”: “Best Day of My Life” is a great, pop-y tune to whistle while you’re walking down the street in the spring air with your head in the clouds. The song is contagiously optimistic, the way a crisp spring day should make you feel. (video)

5.       OneRepublic, “Feel Again”: Thanks to its pounding beat and upbeat lyrics about feeling love again, “Feel Again” has an over-the-top, almost gospel-like euphoria to it. Much like the warmer spring weather will defrost the snow, his newfound love defrosted his cold heart, letting him “feel again.” Who wouldn’t want to shout that from the rooftops? (video)

6.       The Postal Service, “Such Great Heights”: The melody and lyricism of “Such Great Heights” are as easy-going and sweet as a mild spring day. It’s a quiet, introverted love song that makes you smile when you hear it. (video)

7.       Vampire Weekend, “Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa”: Melodically, “Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa” just screams sun and nice weather. With its preppy, minimalistic sound, this song is the sonic equivalent of spending a breezy day on a boat out on the bay. (video)

Spring often brings about feelings of renewal and happiness, contrasting the bleakness of winter the season is supposed to wash away. There are many songs that capture that same fresh, spring feeling. Check out some of our favorite spring songs above and let us know which songs remind you of the season.
