Week in Review: New Songs / Music Videos You Need to Check Out (February 4 – 10, 2018)

With the hustle and bustle of daily life, it can be hard to keep track of all the new music that comes out during the week. That makes the weekend a great time to catch up on what you may have missed.

Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, is here to help! We’ve been keeping track of all the latest new songs and music videos released over the last week. Ranging from punk and indie to garage and pop rock, here are eight tracks that we think are worth checking out.

1.       Maroon 5, “Wait”: Maroon 5 has finally released a video for their single “Wait.” The song finds singer Adam Levine begging his girl to come back after he did something to make her walk out, and the visuals give you the impression that he is really distraught over it. The video is comprised of a series of dreams that vary from his girl’s face being made out of paint and an army of pissed off copies of her beating him up to being caught in an apocalyptic hail storm and finally being unraveled like rope as she slams the door. Like dreams, it makes no sense, but perhaps that’s the point. (video)

2.       We Are Scientists, “One In, One Out”: We Are Scientists returned this week with the announcement of a their seventh album, ‘Megaplex,’ and a brand new single to go with it. On “One In, One Out,” the band opts for a 80s synth-pop sound, one that’s even a bit more pop-y than their more garage-rock leaning fare. This song is a great entryway for the band’s music, as it will make you want to delve deeper into their back catalog. (video)

3.       Portugal. The Man, “Keep On”: Following the amazing 2017 Portugal. The Man had with their album ‘Woodstock,’ the band has now released a video for the album’s next single, “Keep On.” Though it might not live up to the magic that is “Feel It Still” or even “Live for the Moment,” “Keep On” is still melodically strong, giving off more of a surf-rock vibe than the others. The guitar lead paired with lead singer John Gourley’s high-pitched falsetto makes this is a great tune to jam out to. (video)

4.       The Fratellis, “Starcrossed Losers”: “Starcrossed Losers” is an electrified garage-rock jam with a pop-y, memorable melody that permeates your being. Telling the story of a girl who is trying to get her crush to recognize her, you can feel her plea within the rush of the song. (video)
5.       The Wonder Years, “Sister Cities”: The Wonder Years have finally released the first single and title track to their upcoming new album, ‘Sister Cities.’ Written from the perspective of where the band has been and what they have witnessed over the last two years, the song is one of their more reflective pieces. Its sound is a bit heavier than some of their previous songs, but that darkness adds to the emotions it makes you feel. (video)

6.       MGMT, “Me And Michael”: The fourth single from MGMT’s new album, ‘Little Dark Age,’ released this past week, “Me And Michael” is a dreamy tune about the friendships you think will last but aren’t always as “solid" as they seem. For the video, the band tells the untrue story how the song came to be, stealing it from a Filipino band and becoming globally famous for it. Once people find out, the band’s fame comes crumbling down and they are left with nothing. (video)

7.       Paramore, “Rose Colored Boy”: Paramore is still cranking out videos from last year’s fantastic ‘After Laughter,’ the latest of which is for “Rose Colored Boy.” Set on an 80’s morning news and talk show, the video sees frontwoman Hayley Williams go from perky hostess to one who is distressed by all the perkiness around her, eventually completely snapping as she starts jumping on her news desk. “Rose Colored Boy” once again deals with Williams’ bouts with anxiety, manifesting here in what seems to be her questioning her reasons for continuing in music. 8.       A Perfect Circle, “Talk Talk”: Earlier this week, A Perfect Circle finally announced their plans to release their fourth studio album, ‘Eat the Elephant,’ their first in 14 years. Along with the news, the band released the song “Talk Talk.” The song’s trudging guitars and low-set vocals give it a heavy, calculated feel with a sound that borders on eerie. (video)
