Back to School: Seven Songs about School to Get You Ready for the First Day

Labor Day is over, which means summer vacation is over and school will be back in full swing over the next week.

Most people go to school in their lifetimes. And because of this universality, school is also a popular topic for bands and artists to write about.  From songs about high school love interests and feeling bored in class to both loving and dismissing the entire institution, you would be hard pressed not to find a song that summed up your own feelings on the subject.

Whether the prospect of another school year terrifies or delights you, Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, wants to help pump you up with a list of songs written about school. Here are seven of our favorite songs about school that will get you out of bed and rocking your way out the door to your first class.

1.       Bowling for Soup, “High School Never Ends”: If it makes you feel any better, being in high school is no different than being in the real world. That’s what Bowling for Soup have to say about the experience in their tongue-in-cheek roll call of famous names, “High School Never Ends.” In other words, you’ll be dealing with the same petty people and problems long after graduation. 2.       Asher Roth, “I Love College”: “I Love College” is a song about college frat life, specifically getting wasted at frat parties. That’s obviously not what college is all about, nor is it something most frats condone, but Roth does get one thing right: once you graduate, you will most likely miss your time there. (video)

3.       Ramones, “Rock ‘N’ Roll High School”: If you “don’t care about history” or any other school subject, perhaps you would want to go to “Rock ‘N’ Roll High School.” There you can get your “kicks” and get “chicks” while driving around “in your GTO.” Life experience… the most important kind. 4.       Pink Floyd, “Another Brick In The Wall Part 2”: There are, of course, things wrong with the education system and no one points that out better than Pink Floyd does on “Another Brick In The Wall Part 2.” With a refrain of “hey, teacher, leave these kids alone,” the band rails against how schools make students complacent and sucks away their individuality. 5.       Wheatus, “Teenage Dirtbag”: A song right out of the early 2000’s loveable loser movie era, “Teenage Dirtbag” tells the story of a high school “loser” who likes a popular girl but she “doesn’t know who” he is. Who hasn’t been made to feel like that before? (video)

6.       Nada Surf, “Popular”: If you ever wanted to know who to be popular in high school, Nada Surf frontman Matthew Caws tells you how in the band’s 1996 single “Popular.” Main takeaways of this somewhat sarcastic take on the high school experience: wash your hair, flirt and date everyone. 7.       Vampire Weekend, “Campus”: It’s awkward seeing someone you hooked up with across campus. The guys in Vampire Weekend know how you feel, reflecting that feeling in the lyrics to “Campus” in the most realistic light possible. School song points also go to the band for having written much of their debut album while still in college at Columbia University. (video)

Whether you love or hate school, we’re sure you will love these songs about school. Check these out and have a rocking school year!
