Nostalgia is very in right now as we all attempt to relive our
glory days. In that regard, we have all wished at one point or another that our
favorite bands that have parted ways will someday get back together. We all “freak
out” every time we hear that some beloved band or group will be reuniting for
either a new album or a tour. Even the slightest appearance of members of a
long-broken-up group together sets the rumor mills ablaze.
Vinyl Bay 777 has been following the rumors and has compiled
this list of seven artists for whom the rumor mills have been stirring lately.
While some of these are coming to fruition, others, quite disappointingly, have
no base in fact.
1.
Jet: Let’s start with a rumor that has turned
out to be true. Australian rock band Jet broke up in 2012 after releasing three
studio albums. Best known for their hit “Are You Gonna Be My Girl,” rumors
started swirling last year that they would be opening up for AC/DC, but nothing
ever happened. They picked up again in September when the band was rumored to
be opening for Bruce Springsteen when he came to Australia, only this time, it
ended up being the truth. Jet will be opening up for Springsteen on five dates
of his tour in January and February of 2017, then later that month playing
their first headlining show together since 2010.
2.
The Smashing Pumpkins Original Line-Up: On to
something that could possibly happen in the near future. It’s been nearly two
decades since Billy Corgan has played with James Iha, D’arcy Wretzky and Jimmy
Chamberlin as the Smashing Pumpkins. However, rumors have been swirling since
Corgan and Chamberlin have been playing shows together since 2014 and Corgan’s
soured relationship with Iha and Wretzky has sweetened up a bit. While Corgan
has made it clear that they are not ready for a reunion yet, it might not be
too long before fans get one.
3.
Destiny’s Child: The group has briefly reunited
twice since they formally broke up in 2006; once at the 2013 Super Bowl
Half-Time show and another time at the 2015 Stellar Awards. This makes talk of
an actual Destiny’s Child reunion seem like it could be in the cards. New
rumors have risen in the last week as an Instagram account for the trio has
just been launched with nostalgic pictures of the trio being posted. With the
group’s 20th anniversary coming up in 2017, there are whispers that
there could be a reunion tour in the works. But of course, that’s speculation.
4.
From First To Last and Sonny Moore (Skrillex):
This one is not necessarily about a band that might get back together, but who
they might get back together with. While From First To Last did break up for
four years, they have been consistently touring since 2014 with a different
line-up. However, in August, the band’s new vocalist announced that he was
leaving the band, sparking rumors that the band could be reuniting with former
frontman Sonny Moore, a.k.a. Skrillex. There has been no word since, but some
pop-punk fans might be sitting on the edge of their seats waiting to hear
something.
5.
Oasis:
Rumors have been swirling about a possible Oasis reunion on the occasion of the
new documentary about the band, ‘Supersonic.’ There was one theory going around
this weekend that Liam and Noel Gallagher have made up and are looking at
possible opening bands for a 2017 tour. However, this has not been confirmed
and Liam has a new album coming out next year that he will probably focus on.
And, oh yeah, they’re still calling each other potatoes over Twitter. We’ll see
what happens.
6.
Talking Heads: On to things that most likely
will not happen. Earlier this year, there was some speculation that the Talking
Heads would be reuniting for a tour and to record new music. This is apparently
not the case, as band members Jerry Harrison and Chris Frantz have stated.
While their comments to Blast Echo make it sound like they would be up for a
reunion, it sounds as if David Byrne might not be.
7.
The Smiths: We know this is never happening, but
it keeps popping up. New rumors began earlier this year when a Twitter account
was set up by Warner Music UK for the band. It turns out that the account was
only created as a way to celebrate the band’s legacy and not to announce some
big news. Smiths frontman Stephen Morrissey has said repeatedly that the band
will never get back together because it wouldn’t have the same kind of spirit.
And also, he doesn’t want to.
Whether or not the above rumors are true, the rumor mills
will continue to give people hope that their favorite defunct bands will get
back together. People remember the good old days and the music that made them
feel a certain way and want to relive that.
