It’s been a long week and it’s time to unwind. Why not see a
live show get some of that pent up energy out before the start of the next work
week.
Vinyl Bay 777 has you covered. Here are our picks for the
shows we think you should see this weekend in New York.
1.
Tegan and Sara: These twins have had a meteoric
rise to the top, heavily sparked by their song for the ‘Lego Movie,’ “Everything
is Awesome.” They released their latest album, ‘Love You to Death,’ in May and
are currently touring behind it with Torres as the main supporting act. (Friday,
Madison Square Garden)
2.
Indigo Girls: The late 80’s alt-rock duo and
political activists released their 14th studio album, ‘One Lost Day,’
in 2015. Tickets for tonight’s show, featuring Becky Warren as main support,
are sold out, but perhaps there will be more at the door. (Friday, Space at
Westbury)
3.
Toots & the Maytals: Legendary reggae band Toots
and the Maytals are back on the road again after an incident caused singer
Toots Hibbert to refrain from playing live for more than three years. Leba will
be opening the show. (Friday, Capitol Theatre)
4.
Emarosa: Hardcore band Emerosa released their fourth
studio album, ‘131,’ this past summer, their first for Hopeless Records. Having
already released five singles from the album already, the band are now set to
embark on a fall headlining tour. They will be taking Anarbor and Cold
Collective with them as support, with Cedar Green joining them at Saturday’s
show in New York. (Saturday, Studio at Webster Hall)
5.
Machine Gun Kelly: Hip Hop artist Machine Gun
Kelly released his sophomore album, ‘General Admission,’ late last year after
much anticipation. He is currently on tour, playing New Jersey’s Starland
Ballroom on Sunday before heading off to the Midwest. (Sunday, Starland
Ballroom)
6.
Jam The Vote: In a time where everyone is bogged
down in all this election talk, The Preservation Hall Jazz Band and Blind Boys
of Alabama are holding an “old fashioned New Orleans-style jam session” to
relieve you of that stress. The show is in partnerships with HeadCount.org, a
non-partisan voter registration organization, and will feature a number of
special guests, including Craig Finn (The Hold Steady), Eugene Hutz (Gogol
Bordello), Matisyahu, Questlove and more. If you can’t make it to Port Chester
for the show, you can stream it online in exchange for a promise that you will
vote. (Sunday, Capitol Theatre)
7.
Elvis Costello: Having released 30 studio albums
over the course of his career, Elvis Costello has been an influential part of music
history for nearly 40 years. In 2015, he released his memoir, ‘Unfaithful music
& Disappearing Ink.’ His show on Sunday might be sold out, but his show on
Monday does not look to be. (Sunday and Monday, Beacon Theatre)
