Bands of Brothers: Seven Bands Made of Siblings

The trailer for a new Oasis documentary has hit the internet, showing the rise and fall of one of the most influential bands of the 1990s Brit Pop invasion. ‘Supersonic’ will make its debut in UK theaters on October 2 with a special satellite event. There is no word yet on a US release date.

When Oasis released their debut album, ‘Definitely Maybe’ in 1994, the band rocketed to stardom, as did brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher. Throughout the band’s tenure, the relationship between the two became strained, leading to a lot of name calling and a formal break-up in 2009.

Oasis weren’t the only band to be dominated by siblings. Here are seven more bands whose family bonds run deep.

1.       Kings of Leon: Composed of brothers Nathan, Caleb and Jared Followill and their cousin Matthew Followill, the band hit it big in 2008 with their hit “Sex on Fire,” and have been staples on adult contemporary radio ever since. Though at one time the relationship between the siblings was contentious, the band is in a better place and working on new music.

2.       Good Charlotte: Unlike Oasis, the Madden twins (Benji and Joel) don’t have any ill will against each other. Even after Good Charlotte went on hiatus, the two set out on their own, performing country-tinged pop songs together under the name The Madden Brothers. Now that Good Charlotte is back, the two have been blasting their early 2000s brand of pop-punk once again, releasing a new album earlier this year.

3.       Bee Gees: Barry, Maurice and Robin Gibb became the hottest band of brothers on the disco scene with hits like “Stayin’ Alive” and “How Deep is Your Love.” Unfortunately, both Maurice and Robin have passed away, leaving Barry as the only remaining sibling, so the band isn’t performing anymore.

4.       Tegan and Sara: Twins Tegan and Sara Quinn have been getting more and more publicity lately, especially after they released “Everything is Awesome” for ‘The Lego Movie.’ But even before that, their indie-pop was getting them recognized by college radio stations all over the country.

5.       The Kinks: Ray and Dave Davies created one of the greatest Brit Pop bands, The Kinks, in the early 1960s, influencing countless bands, including Oasis and Blur. The band released 24 studio albums before breaking up in 1996. It wasn’t until 2015 that the brothers would perform on stage together again, during one of Dave’s London solo shows.

6.       Heart: Best known for their hits “Barracuda,” “What About Love” and “These Dreams,” Heart is led by sister duo Ann and Nancy Wilson. The two would become the only original members of the group when they reformed in 2002 after a seven year hiatus. Most recently, the band released a new album, ‘Beautiful Broken,’ and toured all summer with Joan Jett and Cheap Trick.

7.       The Beach Boys: One of the biggest bands of the mid-1960s, The Beach Boys originally consisted of brothers Brian, Dennis and Carl Wilson, as well as cousin Mike Love and friend Al Jardine. Over the last 50 years, the band has released hits like “Surfin’ Safari,” “Surfin’ U.S.A.” and “Little Deuce Coup,” as well as the cult-status album ‘Pet Sounds.’ While Carl and Dennis are no longer with us, what was left of the original Beach Boys reunited in 2011 for their 50^th anniversary and the first proper Beach Boys tour in 10 years.

While siblings may not always get along, these bands have stuck it through and gave the world so much amazing music.

Seven Most Popular Pink Floyd Songs

On this day in 1944, Roger Waters, singer and bassist for legendary jam band Pink Floyd, was born in England.

Pink Floyd has been a staple of the global rock scene for decades. Releasing their debut album, ‘The Piper at the Gates of Dawn,’ in 1967, the band has put out 15 studio albums, three live albums, 10 greatest hit albums and had more than 27 singles. That’s not even mentioning the hundreds of bootlegged recordings of the band’s live shows that were made and passed around in the band’s “golden years.”

The band hit commercial success in 1973 with their eighth album, ‘Dark Side of the Moon.’ Their subsequent concept albums, ‘Wish You Were Here,’ ‘Animals,’ and especially ‘The Wall,’ were also hits for the band and would give them the biggest hits of their career.

In honor of Waters’ birthday, here are seven of Pink Floyd’s most popular singles. These are the songs that have been played and overplayed for years, yet we still can’t get enough of them.

1.       “Welcome to the Machine”: From the album ‘Wish You Were Here,’ “Welcome to the Machine” is a trudging ode to the music industry. Synth-heavy and filled with a cacophony of sound effects make this one of Pink Floyd’s most recognizable songs.

2.       “Another Brick in the Wall (Part II)”: A staple of many classic rock stations and a number one single for Pink Floyd, “Another Brick in the Wall” is simple yet demanding. Critical of the way schools churn out students who can’t think for themselves, there is a theme of rebellion and uprising that’s threaded throughout the entire song. This is sustained by the song’s pulsing baseline and further advanced with the chorus of children singing. Also, it has one of the creepiest videos from the film version of ‘The Wall’ ever.

3.       “Comfortably Numb”: Also from ‘The Wall,’ “Comfortably Numb” starts as a slow, ethereal tune, a sort of escape from the rest of the album, then descends into madness by the end.  It is the song’s psychedelic lightness that makes the song one of the band’s most memorable, and one the stations play over and over.

4.       “Hey You”: The third big hit from ‘The Wall,’ “Hey You” is a call for help. It’s panicked and frantic, just like the album’s main character looking for someone to notice his pain immediately before something happens. The song brings back parts of other ‘Wall’ songs, the culmination of so many pent up feelings. Every time it comes back to a verse, the words “hey you” talk directly to the listener, making it more personal.

5.       “Wish You Were Here”: Although this song was never officially a single, it still became one of the band’s most well-known. The title track from their 1975 album, it chronicles bandmate Syd Barrett’s descent into mental illness. With some of the most memorable lyrics of any Pink Floyd song, this fan favorite has become a radio staple because aren’t we all “lost souls swimming in fish bowls.”

6.       “Money”: Pink Floyd’s first number one in the U.S., “Money” made a lot of money. The ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ track criticizes consumer culture in its lyrics with a sort of up-beat, bouncy baseline.

7.       “Time”: Contemplating the passage of time, “Time” feels like time ticking by. This ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ single is brooding and pensive, with a baseline that feels like a heart beating and a chiming clock introduction.  

Pink Floyd has become one of the most highly regarded bands in rock music. Their albums ‘Dark Side of the Moon,’ ‘Wish You Were Here’ and ‘The Wall’ have spawned several of the biggest rock hits of the 1970s and 1980s. And Roger Waters was at the forefront of it, having penned many of the tracks on this list.

Five Albums Celebrating Milestone Anniversaries in September 2016

It’s hard to believe that it’s already September. Summer is almost over, school is about to begin and the cooler weather will be here before you know it.

While we reminisce about this past summer and look forward to all the new music we will be getting this month, let’s also take a look back at beloved albums that have become a part of our collective music memory.

Here are five albums that are celebrating milestone anniversaries this September:

1.       Nirvana, ‘Nevermind’: It seems like there’s a new anniversary for this album all the time, but in 2016, quintessential grunge band Nirvana’s second album, ‘Nevermind,’ turns 25 on September 24! A masterpiece of an album the whole way through, it gave us megahit “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” as well as “In Bloom,” “Come As You Are,” “ Breed,” “Lithium,” “Polly” and “On A Plain.” It’s no surprise that this album has been talked about for years and will be talked about for years to come.

2.       Justin Timberlake, ‘Future Sex/Love Sounds’: Noted as being his “comeback” of sorts, Justin Timberlake’s second album, ‘Future Sex/Love Sounds,’ will be celebrating its 10^th anniversary on September 12. The phrase “bringing sexy back” became a solid part of our slang for a couple of years after its release.

3.       Beyoncé, ‘B’Day’: While not as iconic as her debut album, Beyoncé’s second studio album, ‘B’Day,’ was still one of the most successful albums of the mid-2000s. Celebrating its 10^th anniversary on September 4. If there’s anything to remember from this album, it’s the single “Irreplaceable,” which is dramatic and empowering at the same time. There’s a reason why she’s called the “Queen B.”

4.       Jay-Z, ‘The Blueprint’: Beyoncé’s husband is also celebrating an album anniversary this September. ‘The Blueprint’ (the original) will turn 15 on September 11. The album gave us the song “Izzo (H.O.V.A.), which became a cultural phenomenon and popularized a new way of spelling one’s name.

5.       Weezer, ‘Pinkerton’: While the album was a dud when it was first released, Weezer’s second album, ‘Pinkerton,’ which turns 20 on September 24, has become one of the band’s most iconic. A cult classic by today’s standards, ‘Pinkerton’ gave us such hits as “El Scorcho” and “The Good Life.”

The Black Eyed Peas and Using Music to Promote Peace

It was announced on Thursday that the Black Eyed Peas would be reuniting for a re-recording of their hit “Where Is the Love.”

“#WHERESTHELOVE (feat. The World)” will feature the Peas, plus an all-star cast of singers and celebrities, including A$AP Rocky, Jaden Smith, Snoop Dogg, Quincy Jones, Mary J. Blige, Nicole Scherzinger and many, many more, lending their vocals in the name of charity. Proceeds from the track will be going to the i.am.angel foundation, a charity started by will.i.am to help underprivileged children through providing college scholarships, in an effort to curb gun violence in the United States.

This is obviously not the first time musicians have come together in such a way for a cause. Go back to Band Aid in 1984 with “Do They Know It’s Christmas.” Bob Geldof wrote the song to raise awareness of the famine that was going on in Ethiopia. “We Are the World,” written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie, was inspired by Band Aid and also raised money for African famine relief. Over the years, these songs have been recorded and re-recorded to benefit various charities and relief funds.

Charity concerts have also been a popular way to get the word out. We’ve seen with Live Aid and Live 8 that music can bring the whole world together for a united cause.

While the idea behind “#WHERESTHELOVE (feat. The World)” is not new, it is an effective way to get a message out there. Because the song was so popular and political for its time, giving it a facelift and a new meaning will breathe new life into it.

It’s almost Labor Day weekend, which means the unofficial end of summer and just four more short days until the kids go back to school.

1.       Electric Zoo Festival: The largest EDM festival in New York is coming back to Randall’s Island Park Friday through Sunday. While the price of tickets is very steep, you get what you pay for. The line-up features the hottest DJs from all over the world, including Bassnectar on Friday, Tiësto and Steve Aoki on Saturday and Hardwell and The Chainsmokers on Sunday, as well as many, many more.

2.       Various 90s Nights: This Friday, there are three separate 1990s nights going on in New York. If you have deep love and nostalgia for the decade, you’ll want to check out these parties.  To start, Saved By the 90s, with the Bayside Tigers! and DJ Suga Ray returns for another week at Webster Hall. If you’re lucky, a famous 90s face will show up for a surprise DJ set! Le Poisson Rouge is doing their own 90s night with the Fresh Kids of Bel-Air rocking the decade’s hottest tunes. Or… if you don’t feel like leaving the island, Mulcahy’s has you covered with The 90s Band and the Larger Than Life Boy Band Tribute. Whichever one you hit up, it will be a blast from the past.

3.       Marc Antony: The Latin crooner will be taking the stage for two shows this weekend at Radio City Music Hall. If you didn’t see him last weekend, now is your chance to see him before he moves on to Las Vegas.

4.       Smithereens: The famed 80s rock band have been celebrating their 30^th anniversary this year and will be performing Saturday and Sunday nights at Wonder Bar in Asbury Park, NJ. But don’t sweat it if you don’t want to go to New Jersey. The band will be back to play B.B. King’s in January.

5.       Kanye West: West will be bringing his Saint Pablo Tour to Madison Square Garden on Monday and Tuesday. See the hip hop master at work and why he’s considered one of the best-seeling artists of all time.

1.       Ramones, ‘Ramones’: The iconic debut album from iconic punk band Ramones turned 40 this year. For the occasion, Rhino is releasing a 40^th anniversary edition of the album, as well as a cassette of the album for Cassette Store Day. The album contains some of the band’s biggest hits, including “Blitzkrieg Bop,” “Beat on the Brat,” “Judy is a Punk” and more.

2.       Various Artists, ‘Burger Says Sire’: Speaking of Ramones, Burger Records has included them on their Cassette Store Day release as well. ‘Burger Says Sire’ is a compilation of classic tracks from some of Sire Records’ most iconic artists from the late 1960s through 1990. Besides Ramones, the tape features Flamin Groovies, Richard Hell and The Voidoids, Dead Boys, Madonna and more. 3.       Death Cab for Cutie, ‘The Photo Album’: It’s been 15 years since the release of Death Cab for Cutie’s breakthrough third album, ‘The Photo Album.’ For Cassette Store Day, Barsuk Records will be releasing the album on cassette for the first time. The release also includes the track “Gridlock Caravans” which was not released with the original US version of the album, as well as a download card.

4.       JEFF the Brotherhood, ‘Global Chakra Rhythms’: Releases don’t get much more limited edition than this. JEFF the Brotherhood will be releasing their mysterious double-LP, ‘Global Chakra Rhythms,’ as a colored double-cassette for Cassette Store Day, and are limiting its release to only 200, hand-numbered copies.

5.       J Dilla, ‘Welcome 2 Detroit/The Shining’: Two albums in one! BBE will be releasing J Dilla’s debut album, ‘Welcome 2 Detroit,’ and posthumous second album, ‘The Shining,’ together on one, very limited edition, cassette.

6.       Heavens to Betsy, ‘Calculated’: If you love riot grrrl, this is the release for you! Heavens to Betsy, featuring a pre-Sleater-Kinney Corin Tucker, is rereleasing its one and only full-length album, ‘Calculated,’ for Cassette Store Day! The album last saw a repressing on vinyl for Record Store Day in 2014 and will now be getting the cassette treatment.

'Hardwired...to Self Destruct' is the tenth studio album from the iconic metal band, who's hits include "Enter Sandman," "Nothing Else Matters," "The Memory Remains" and "Master of Puppets," among others. This is the band's first record since 2008's 'Death Magnetic.'

Five Long Island Artists You May Not Have Known Were From Long Island

Long Island has always been known for having an amazing music scene. Artists such as Billy Joel, Joan Jett and Taking Back Sunday have all come out of the scene and taken the world by storm.

But Long Island’s famed musicians don’t end there. Many artists have come from the Nassau and Suffolk areas, not to mention Queens and Brooklyn, and made it to the big time.

Here are five artists from Long Island that you might not have known call Long Island home:

1.       Steve Vai: Famed singer, songwriter and guitarist Steve Vai has been working with music greats such as Frank Zappa, Yngwie Malmsteen, David Lee Roth, Ozzy Osbourne and more since the 1980s. But did you know that he grew up in Carle Place! He lived here until he went to Berklee College of Music and began his music career.

2.       Twisted Sister: Best known for hits like “I Wanna Rock” and “We’re Not Gonna Take It,” Twisted Sister has been bringing glam rock to the masses since the 1970s. Though originally based out of New Jersey, the band relocated to Long Island, the home of their lead singer Dee Snyder, who had grown up in Baldwin. Snyder was even a member of the Baldwin High School concert choir before graduation.

3.       Blue Öyster Cult: Before they were known as Blue Öyster Cult, the band was called Soft White Underbelly and getting their start in the Stony Brook University area.  The band played many gigs in the area before signing with Elecktra, changing their name and subsequently signing to Columbia Records. Now, the band is best known for hits such as “Don’t Fear the Reaper” and “Burnin’ for You.”

4.       Lou Reed: Born in Brooklyn and raised in Freeport, Lou Reed is best known as the former lead singer of The Velvet Underground, as well as for his solo work. He has become one of the greatest and most revered musicians of all time, and even after his passing in 2013, his legacy and music have lived on.

5.       Mariah Carey: The pop diva known for massive hits like “Honey” and “One Sweet Day” is a Long Island girl! Carey grew up in Huntington and later lived in Greenlawn. The singer currently holds the record for most number one singles by a female artist with 18.

3.       Green Day: It’s been four years since the celebrated 90s pop-punk band released their ‘Uno,’ ‘Dos,’ ‘Tre’ trilogy of albums and went on hiatus. Now Green Day is back and gearing up to release ‘Revolution Radio’ on October 7. You can hear the album’s first single, “Bang Bang,” right now. 4.       Bon Jovi: Another band who has been consistently putting out music, Bon Jovi will be releasing their 14^th album, ‘This House is Not for Sale’ on October 21. You can hear the title track right now.

5.       Van Morrison: Best known for songs like “Brown Eyed Girl” and “Moondance,” prolific rock musician Van Morrison will be releasing his 36^th studio album, ‘Keep Me Singing,’ on September 30. 2009, more than 2.5 million vinyl records were sold in the United States.

MYTH # 8

New vinyl manufacturing equipment is currently being manufactured

False.

There’s no doubt that pressing machinery is in high demand with the

incredible resurgence of vinyl records. However, very little new manufacturing equipment is being made today. For example, the last cutting lathes were manufactured in the 1980s, and can only be found through independent service consultants and cutting room service departments.

MYTH # 7

7″ vinyl cut at 33rpm sounds as good as 12″ vinyl cut at 33rpm

False.

It’s never a good idea to cut a 7″ at 33 rotations per minute, it generally

sounds bad. 7″ records are smaller, so naturally the grooves are more

compressed. As the grooves get closer to the center of a record the groove

width is reduced. Therefore, at the slower speed of 33rpm, distortion can be highly noticeable and cause an unattractive sound. With the circumference of 12″ records, there is more surface area to experiment with. It is more manageable to engrave the outside of the disc where there is better frequency response and minimal tracing distortion. If you have your heart set on putting out a 7″ record, remember that it is highly recommended to record at the speed of 45rpm.

MYTH # 6

7″ vinyl always comes with a big spindle hole

False.

Back in the 1950s, 7″ records were made with large spindle holes for one

main reason: it allows easier handling by jukeboxes. You can still find

them, and Record Pressing can still make them with both large and small

spindle holes.

MYTH # 5

Gold records are made of gold

False.

If this were true, I would have tried getting my hands on one a long time ago. When an artist goes “gold” or “platinum” it refers to the number of albums that were sold. Initially, trimmed and plated metal masters, mothers, or stampers were used to make the awards. Most gold and platinum records are actual vinyl records dipped in metallic paint. Sorry metal detector aficionados.

MYTH # 4

You can NOT play a lacquer master on a record player

False.

Yes you can! If you have a turntable or lathe that accommodates a 14 inch disc, the size of lacquer masters, you can play it. You can even play the mother, a metal version of the record. The only thing you cannot play on a record player is a stamper itself because these are created as the negatives meaning that the grooves are reversed.

MYTH # 3

Direct Metal Mastering (DMM) sounds better than lacquer mastering

False.

There is a difference between the two processes, but there is a consensus that lacquer mastering simply has a better, warmer sound. DMM works well with long LPs – there is better pitch control in the system (for those that have not been back-converted to lacquer as most have), which is better for longer lengths (albums etc.). There is also higher frequency response and, because of this, grooves cannot be cut as deep and there is sometimes a tin-type sound to DMM. For warmer, deeper sound and better base response, lacquer mastering is the way to go. Lacquers can also be significantly louder on EP’s or singles than DMM. Have you ever wondered where dubstep gets that explosive bass that shakes your entire body? That’s lacquer mastering at its finest.

MYTH # 2

Record labels are glued on

False.

In the vinyl manufacturing process, special paper is used and baked to remove all moisture that makes adhesion possible. There is no glue used in the manufacturing process. Instead, special PVC melted into rubber patties, called “biscuits,” are placed between two record labels in a press. A metal stamper is used to apply pressure at a very hot temperature to melt and mold the biscuit and labels together to create the vinyl record.

You can cut deeper grooves in a 180 gram record than in a thinner record

False.

A record press can only produce grooves that are as deep as the cuts in the lacquer master. This depth is far shallower than any record thickness. Consequently, the thickness or thinness of the record has no impact on the depth of the grooves. Considering this, there has yet to be a record made where the two sides of the grooves meet in the middle meaning a thicker record is not necessarily advantageous. However, some artists, producers and consumers prefer the benefits of a thicker record which include reduced warp, less breakage, longer lasting quality, and that the weight of the records make them nicer to hold.

Vinyl Revival Stumps Digital Age

Vinyl records, the kind that we here at Vinyl Bay 777 love to frame, study, and spin, are undoubtedly technology from last century.  In an era where a gadget the size of your hand can store half a terabyte of data, translating into thousands of songs spanning hundreds of albums, it sounds almost quaint that physically distributed music – cold, hard media such as Compact Disks and magnetic tape - could stand up to digital downloads.  With electronic audio formats such as MP3's dominating in the cost, storage space, quality and, sadly, ease-of-piracy categories, the only leg left for solid media to stand on is the value of touch.  Surprisingly for many who don't work with us at Vinyl Bay 777, the soft grooves of vinyl records have managed to provide physical media a grip on the sales charts long after their supposed death at the hands of CD's.

According to Wikipedia, global sales in Vinyl have skyrocketed from around $55 million in 2007 to $171 million in 2012.  $55 million of that growth came between 2011 and 2012 alone.  This resurrection of a media form once written off as dead is being called the “Vinyl Revival,” a term popularized in part by Britain's The Independent's use of the term in their 2012 article, The Rapacity Of The Record Revival.

Part of the reason for the Vinyl Revival's success has been its status symbol as part of collector-edition sets for groups like the Foo Fighters, or pre-order packages for bands like Silversun Pickups.  In the case of pre-order packages, sometimes an MP3 copy of the album is included with the purchase, merging digital and physical distribution.  Collectors can hold on to their mint-condition vinyl albums and still listen to the music they bought!  Plus, no amount of internet uploading can duplicate a physical object, so sales officials can rest assured that they will get an excellent mark-up on their merchandise even if the MP3 files find their way to a torrent site.

Speaking to The Independent in its Record Revival article, Sean Bidder, the creative director of Vinyl Foundry, argued that it was worth “another few pounds” to create a vinyl album because of its superior “quality and craftsmanship.”  We at Vinyl Bay 777 completely agree.  We love feeling the velvety grooves of our albums, and that's why we got into the industry.
