Albums to Watch For in August 2019

The new month of August begins this week, which means a whole new batch of albums will be hitting shelves just in time to add to your late summer playlist. With highly anticipated releases from Taylor Swift, Tool, Slipknot and more, August is gearing up to be a great month for new releases.

Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, loves new music. That’s why we’ve rounded up some of our picks for the albums to watch for in August 2019. Here are six (and a few more) we think will be worth checking out.

1.       Volbeat, ‘Rewind, Replay, Rebound’: Volbeat get eclectic with their upcoming album ‘Rewind, Replay, Rebound,’ out Friday. From the pop-punky “Leviathan” and the classic rock-leaning “Last Day Under The Sun” to the rockabilly “Pelvis on Fire” and hard rocking “Cheapside Sloggers,” there seem to be a lot of different elements being dealt out with this album. However different though, all of these singles are memorable and rock hard, which bodes well for the album. (8/2)

2.       Slipknot, ‘We Are Not Your Kind’: Slipknot will be releasing their sixth studio album, ‘We Are Not Your Kind,’ in August.  Frontman Corey Taylor said to NME in 2018 about the tone of the album, “It’s complicated, it’s dark, it’s heavy, it’s heavy, it’s melodic, it’s fierce, it’s angry, it’s raw as hell.” That seems to check out, as singles “Unsainted” and “Solway Firth” are intense, aggressive pieces of metal. 3.       Sleater-Kinney, ‘The Center Won’t Hold’: Sleater-Kinney continues their reunion this year with their upcoming ninth studio album, ‘The Center Won’t Hold.’ Produced by St. Vincent, the album features some of the band’s most biting lyricism and cultural commentary to date. Unfortunately, it will be the band’s last album with drummer Janet Weiss, who announced that she was leaving the band in July. (8/16)

4.       Frank Turner, ‘No Man’s Land’: Whereas much of Frank Turner’s repertoire is self-deprecating rock-tinged folk about himself, ‘No Man’s Land’ gets back to the storyteller nature of true folk. The songs, each about a famous woman in history, range from upbeat, jaunty tunes about tavern owner / “witch” Jinny Bingham and early rocker Sister Rosetta Thorpe to low, brooding tracks about dancer Mata Hari. 5.       Taylor Swift, ‘Lover’: One of the most highly anticipated albums of the year, ‘Lover’ finds Taylor Swift engaging the happy, bubbly Taylor she drowned in darkness on her last album, 2017’s ‘Reputation.’ The aesthetic associated with the new album cycle is colorful, as evidenced by the imagery in the videos for “Me!” and “You Need to Calm Down.” Both of those singles landed at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, while the album has reportedly set pre-order records on Apple Music, so it’s not a stretch to say that this will be a hot release.  (8/23)

6.       Tool, ‘Fear Inoculum’: After years of lawsuits and slow progress, Tool’s first album of new music in 13 years, ‘Fear Inoculum’ is finally making its way to shelves this August. The wait alone makes this another one of the most highly anticipated albums of the year, and the slow trickle of information on it only adds fuel to that fire. (8/30)

Albums Coming Out in August 2018

With the new month of August starting tomorrow, summer release season continues to rage on. That means there is a whole new roster of album releases to get excited for.

August is filled with a lot of highly anticipated new albums. Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj both have huge releases slated to come out in the next month. The same goes for rock bands Alice in Chains and Death Cab for Cutie. Lovelytheband is slated to release its debut album, as is Bon Iver / The National side project Big Red Machine. Jason Mraz is releasing a new album sure to fit the warmth of the summer sun. August will also see some unexpected new music from the likes of Alkaline Trio, Plain White T’s and Blue October.

Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, loves new music. That’s why we’re taking a look ahead at some of August’s hot new releases. Here are nine that we think will be worth picking up in the coming month.

1.       Lovelytheband, ‘Finding It Hard to Smile’: Lovelytheband had a breakout year in 2017, with their debut single “Broken” becoming a huge alt-rock hit. Though their second single “These Are My Friends” hasn’t hit quite the same level of success, the song hits the same pop-y, easily consumable notes as the first. If the rest of the album is like this, than the band could have one of the biggest underground albums of the summer. (8/3)

2.       Jason Mraz, ‘Know’: Jason Mraz consistently comes out with amazing, catchy, laid-back tunes from album to album and from what I’ve heard of ‘Know’ so far, his latest album will be no different. “Have It All” in particular merges the fast-talking wordplay of his early work with the acoustic, happy-go-lucky feel of his more recent fare, making for a well-rounded sound. 3.       Nicki Minaj, ‘Queen’: It seems like Nicki Minaj has been everywhere on everyone else’s albums over the last few years, but keeping quiet about the progress of her own work. That changed in April when the rapper announced a new album, ‘Queen,’ and released two back-to-back singles. Minaj continues to keep many of the album’s details quiet though, as she has not released an official track list yet. However, with Minaj’s unique flow and style, there is no doubt that theis album will sit on top of the sales charts. (8/10)

4.       Death Cab for Cutie, ‘Thank You for Today’: A lot has happened with Death Cab for Cutie since they released 2015’s ‘Kintsugi,’ the biggest of which was the departure of founding member Chris Walla. Now with Ben Gibbard as the sole original member, the band comes back with their ninth studio album, ‘Thank You for Today,’ this August. The album’s first single, “Gold Rush,” which is described as a “requiem” for changing neighborhoods and features a sample from Yoko Ono’s “Mind Train,” is memorable and the proper continuation of the indie-rock sound the band has helped define. 5.       Ariana Grande, ‘Sweetener’: Ariana Grande’s upcoming fourth album, ‘Sweetener,’ is one of the most anticipated albums of the summer. Having released three singles from the album so far, each has charted on the Billboard Hot 100 and people have been especially enthusiastic about the innovativeness of “No Tears Left to Cry” and “God Is a Woman.” Sales also won’t be hurt by the fact that she has been in the public eye for more than her music lately; she recently got engaged to comedian Pete Davidson, for whom she wrote the namesake song on the album. 6.       Blue October, ‘I Hope You’re Happy’: Blue October took a more positive approach with their upcoming album, ‘I Hope You’re Happy.’ While many of the band’s previous songs have dealt with pain and mental strife, the title track seems to find frontman Justin Furstenfeld reconciling with life. The sound is less dark too, adding in a bit more synth and pep. It will be interesting to hear were this new sound takes them. (8/17)

7.       Alice in Chains, ‘Rainier Fog’: It’s been five years, but Alice in Chains is back with a brand new album. ‘Rainier Fog’ is the grunge / metal band’s sixth album and first for the BMG label. According to a Rolling Stone interview feature, vocalist / guitarist Jerry Cantrell said that much of the album is a look back at where the band came from, with inspiration coming from the Seattle music scene, as well as the bands that inspired them to play (especially on the title track). 8.       Alkaline Trio, ‘Is This Thing Cursed?’: Alkaline Trio have been quietly at work on a new album, ‘Is This Thing Cursed?’,” their first in five years. Now the band is ready to share what they’ve come up with. According to an interview with the band in New Noise Magazine, the writing for the album was very similar to that of their second album, ‘Maybe I’ll Catch Fire,’ with vocalist / bassist Dan Andriano saying “I really feel like we made a record that the old school fans are going to dig.” (8/31)

9.       Big Red Machine, ‘Big Red Machine’: Earlier this year, Bon Iver frontman Justin Vernon and The National’s Aaron and Bryce Dessner started a new side project called Big Red Machine, releasing four songs through a new streaming website they created, PEOPLE. Now the group is putting out an official, self-titled album. This could be an interesting collaboration considering the two bands’ very different sounds. (8/31)

New Albums to Watch For in August 2017

The summer music release season continues to roll on as August gets under way. With all the new albums coming out, it’s time to take a look at what albums will be coming out this month.

August will see new releases from some top music talents, as well as some up-and-coming players in the game. Kesha will be making her return this month when she puts out her first album in five years. Quiet Riot will be debuting their new lead singer with their upcoming album. Queens of the Stone Age and Gogol Bordello will also be putting out new music. PVRIS is poised to make their big break with their upcoming sophomore album.

Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, has been browsing the internet for the latest news on new albums. Here are seven coming out this month that we think will be worth checking out.

1.       Dan Wilson, ‘Recovered’: Best known as the lead singer of 1990s one-hit-wonders Semisonic, you may not know that Dan Wilson also writes music for some of today’s hottest artist. ‘Recovered’ finds Wilson taking on some of these songs for himself. The track list includes such hits as Adele’s “Someone Like You,” John Legend’s “You and I” and Dixie Chicks’ “Not Ready To Make Nice,” among others. There is even a rerecording of his own hit, “Closing Time.” (8/4)

2.       Quiet Riot, ‘Road Rage’: ‘Road Rage’ is veteran metal band Quiet Riot’s first album with new lead singer James Durban, best known for his stint on ‘American Idol.’ The entire album was rerecorded to accommodate the new singer after the departure of Seann Nichols. (8/4)

3.       Kesha, ‘Rainbow’: Due to legal issues, Kesha has not been able to release new music in more than five years. The fact that ‘Rainbow’ is even being released and how quickly it was put together and ready to go is a miracle in itself. Listening to the singes, Kesha has a lot to say and is really branching out from the boozy pop she’s known for. This could possibly be one of the hottest albums of the year. (8/11)

4.       Gogol Bordello, ‘Seekers and Finders’: It’s been four years since Gogol Bordello has released a new album. With ‘Seekers and Finders,’ the gypsy punk band make their return, describing the album to Consequence of Sound as a “very magical and playful record” that “echoes the band’s persona.” (8/25)

5.       PVRIS, ‘All We Know of Heaven, All We Need of Hell’: It was only a couple of years ago that PVRIS were playing the small, unknown stages of Warped Tour. Now the band is poised for their big break with their upcoming sophomore album, ‘All We Know of Heaven, All We Need of Hell.’ Single “What’s Wrong,” is a fantastic, powerful track that really shows what the band can do, so I have a lot of faith that this is going to be a great album. 6.       Queens of the Stone Age, ‘Villains’: Queens of the Stone Age will be mixing up their sound a bit when they release their seventh studio album, ‘Villains,’ later this month. Produced by Mark Ronson, frontman Josh Homme decided to go a bit more upbeat with the new album, telling Rolling Stone that he wanted the kind of “tight, vacuous dry sound” of previous Ronson hit “Uptown Funk.” It will be interesting to hear how he integrates that into the band’s hard rock sound. 7.       Filthy Friends, ‘Invitation’: Started as a David Bowie cover band, supergroup Filthy Friends will be releasing an album of originals this month. The band features Slater-Kinney’s Corin Tucker, R.E.M.’s Peter Buck, The Minus 5’s Kurt Bloch and Scott McCaughey and King Crimson’s Bill Rieflin, and has already released the album’s first two singles, “Any King of Crowd” and “The Arrival.” (8/25)
