Week In Review: New Songs & Music Videos You Need to Check Out (January 5-11, 2020)

In this first full week of 2020, the music machine has resumed in full force, bringing with it a wealth of new songs and music videos for our enjoyment. This was especially true for pop and rock music this week, as we got some great new tracks from Ozzy Osbourne, Alicia Keys, Boomtown Rats and more.

Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, has been scouring the internet for the week’s best new songs and music videos. Here are eight (and a few more) of our favorites that we think are worth another listen this weekend.

1.       Ozzy Osbourne feat. Elton John, “Ordinary Man”: “Ordinary Man” is a very unexpected, though not unwelcome, change of pace for Ozzy Osbourne. Elton John’s presence is felt heavily in the track’s piano-driven melody. A true ballad, you get Osbourne’s honest take on fame and life in a very blunt, direct way (the only way he can do a song like this). Surprisingly, Osbourne and John’s voices aren’t too different when they sing and actually fit together really well. Slash’s guitar solo towards the end is also outstanding. (video)

2.       The Script, “Run Through Walls”: “Run Through Walls,” is an uplifting track about appreciating the people in your life that have your back no matter what. The song’s universal pop-rock melody and easily understood lyrics are memorable are the perfect delivery service for its message. (video)

3.       Alicia Keys, “Underdog”: “Underdog” is a song that celebrates the struggles of everyday people just trying to get by. The acoustic guitar and steady beat deliver the song’s message in an easy and memorable way. Keys has a way of appealing to everyone with her songs and this is another great example of that. (video)

4.       Niall Horan, “Put A Little Love On Me”: “Put A Little Love On Me” is a love ballad with a memorable, familiar pop vibe and sweet, heartfelt vocals. The piano-driven melody and sincerity in Horan’s voice made me smile. I could hear this song being made into a duet as well, perhaps with a female vocalist to put a second perspective into it. (video)

5.       The Darkness, “In Another Life”: The latest single off last year’s ‘Easter Is Dead,’ “In Another Life” is a memorable power ballad that will have you singing along at the top of your lungs. The video is an interpretation of the lyrics, with frontman Justin Hawkins playing a devil in hell that is in love with an angel in heaven and tries to find a way to be with her. (video)

6.       Grouplove, “Deleter”: “Deleter” has this big energy that grabs you from the very beginning and doesn’t let go. It’s hard not to bob and bounce your head along to the song’s powerful garage-rock beat.  (video)

7.       Caroline Rose, “Feel The Way I Want”: You can’t help but feel good when listening to “Feel The Way I Want.” The song has a groovy, soulful 70s-meets-today vibe, especially with that horn section that accents the verses. It’s the kind of song that makes you want to groove along in the way Caroline Rose dances across the United States in the video. (video)

8.       of Montreal, “You’ve Had Me Everywhere”: “You’ve Had Me Everywhere” has an upbeat, 80s synth-pop vibe that’s very easy to listen to. Its sweet lyrics will make you smile, while its memorable melody will have you humming along even after the song is over.  (video)
