Week In Review: New Songs / Music Videos You Need to Check Out (December 29, 2019-January 4, 2020)

Happy New Year! It’s the first weekend of the 2020 and though we’re not even a full week in, we’re already seeing the first new music of the year trickling onto the internet. And despite the oddness that is Justin Bieber’s highly-anticipated new song, there are some good tracks out there this week.

Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, has once again combed the internet for the week’s best new songs and music videos. Here are five (and a few more) that we think are worth a listen this weekend.

1.       Oh Wonder, “Happy”: “Happy” puts an upbeat spin on the post-break-up song motif. Instead of anger or jealousy, the lyrics tell of growth and healing. There is no ill-will anymore, only happiness. The song’s bubbly, cheery melody and perky attitude are contagious. (video)

2.       Lauv, “Changes”: “Changes” is a low-key, motivating track about how change is both scary and necessary. The track’s catchy melody and steady beat is a great vehicle for Lauv’s poignant and relatable lyrics. (video)

3.       Ben Watt, “Figures In The Landscape”: Described as a “call to action in response to feelings of powerlessness” by Watt himself, “Figures In The Landscape” is a thought-provoking track that implores its listeners to celebrate what they have or fight for what for what they believe in. Starting off as a soothing piano melody, the song quickly swells, using synths to ramp up the pace and urgency. (video)

4.       Set It Off, “So Predictable”: With “So Predictable,” Set It Off have managed to make their pop-punk sound even bigger. The melody swells from each frustrated verse into this giant chorus, gaining in energy and making you want to get up and dance. (video)

5.       Hailee Steinfeld, “Wrong Direction”: Ending 2019, actress and singer Hailee Steinfeld released break-up song “Wrong Direction.” The downbeat ballad comes from the perspective of someone coming out of an abusive relationship and realizing what they should have seen all along. Steinfeld’s vocals stand above the rest of the music, giving power and emotion to her heart-wrenching lyrics. (video)

Further Listening:
·         Bombay Bicycle Club, “I Can Hardly Speak”: “I Can Hardly Speak” (video)
·         Why Don’t We, “Chills”: (video)
·         Skip Marley, H.E.R., “Slow Down”: (video)
