Ahh, the weekend. A chance to sit back, relax and recover
from the week that was. It’s also a great time to catch up on all the new music
you may have missed while busy with other matters.
This week saw the release of a lot of great new songs and
music videos. Twenty One Pilots released a stand-alone video for their latest
single. Coheed and Cambria continued to bring their new album to life with their
latest video. We also got some new videos from You Me At Six, Papa Roach and Stand
Atlantic. Eminem released a new song and video for his contribution to the ‘Venom’
soundtrack. Hot new bands The Struts and Greta Van Fleet both released new
songs, as did rock established artists like Tenacious D, Halsey, Alessia Cara and
Young the Giant. There were some new rock songs from The Struts, Greta Van
Fleet, Papa Roach and Young The Giant. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, loves new music.
That’s why we’ve once again searched the internet for the week’s best new songs
and music videos. Here are seven you need to check out this weekend.
1.
Amanda Palmer & Jasmine Power, “Mr.
Weinstein Will See You Now”: There is something haunting about the solemness of
this song. The way all the choral parts bounce off each other are like
different voices speaking out. Obviously written in the wake of the Me Too
movement, the song speaks powerfully for anyone who finds themselves a victim
of such horrible crimes. The video adds another layer to the song, giving the
listener a visual representation of the throng of women who are stepping up and
speaking out. Just looking at the way each chorus member expresses their
feelings shows how different people react, some people showing distain, some
fear and some anger. (Note: If you don’t like nudity, do not watch. It makes up
half the video.) (video)
2.
You Me At Six, “Back Again”: You Me At Six have
finally released a video for their funk-filled latest single “Back Again.” Set
in a bowling alley, frontman Josh Franchesci finds himself playing in a
tournament against two hustlers a la ‘The Big Lebowski.’ Of the video,
Franchesci told Kerrang! that “Back Again is a really fun and lighthearted song
for us and we wanted to have a video which also reflected that.” (video)
3.
Twenty One Pilots, “My Blood”: A new video was
released for Twenty One Pilots’ electro-rock-leaning single “My Blood” this
week. As the song begins with the band’s signature sung-rapped verses and goes into
its falsetto-sung electronic choruses, the video unfolds the story of what
seems to be an older brother looking out for his younger brother after the
death of their mother. After building up their relationship, the story shifts
showing that there was no brother at all. (video)
4.
Coheed
And Cambria, “Old Flames”: To coincide with the release of their new album ‘Vaxis:
Act I: The Unheavenly Creatures,’ Coheed and Cambria released a video for their
single “Old Flames.” The song’s piano intro comes in quiet and unassuming as
the video comes upon a band filled with people. As soon as the main characters
in the album’s story barge in to rob said bank, the song breaks out into this
melodic chaos, bolstered by frontman Claudio Sanchez’s masterful lyrical
storytelling. The dancers in white do a great job of representing that chaos
with their frenzied movements against the impeccable lighting. (video)
5.
The Struts, “Fire”: “Fire” might not have the
big chorus that some of the band’s previous singles have, but as the energy builds
there is no stopping it. The verses have the familiar melody of wintery
Christmas carols set on fire for show and effect. By the end, the song is lit ablaze
with the band’s signature over-the-top vocals and powerful guitars. (video)
6.
Greta Van Fleet, “Anthem”: Taking a cue from
late 1960s/early 1970s folk rock, “Anthem” is a low-key ballad full of peace
and love. It’s a warranted change of pace from their usual Led Zeppelin-like
fare, showing a different side to a band that is perhaps still trying to find
their own sound. (video)
7.
Stand Atlantic, “Lost My Cool”: Billed as one of
the “most brutally honest songs” on their upcoming album, “Lost My Cool” is a
break up song from the perspective of the one being hurt by the other’s
actions. The catchy pop-punk melody is the perfect vehicle for the singer’s
anger and frustration as you can feel every barb and jab she doles out in her
lyrics. (video)
