Happy Independence Day weekend! As you’re gearing up to
celebrate with friends and family, why not take a look back at some of the new
music and videos that came out this week.
This week saw new music from new and established artists
alike. Neil Young released a new song that flips the traditional patriotic
anthem on its head. The Killers put out a video to accompany last week’s new
track, “The Man.” Arcade Fire, The National, Liam Gallagher and St. Vincent all
premiered new songs from their upcoming albums this week, while The xx
continued to promote their latest with a new music video. We also got great new
music from up-and-coming bands like Nothing More, Sheer Mag and Oh Wonder.
Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, has been keeping
an eye out for the best new music and videos of the week. Here are seven that
we think you should check out this holiday weekend.
1.
Neil
Young + Promise of the Real, “Children of Destiny”: Just in time for the
Fourth of July, Neil Young and his band Promise of the Real have released an
anthemic new protest song and video. In its first few seconds, “Children of
Destiny” grabs you and wraps you up in the excitement of its parade-march
tempo. These bursts of energy urging people to “stand up for what you believe”
are juxtaposed with softly sung verses that are barely decipherable through
Young’s fairly thin voice. The video continues the light and dark trade off,
going between happy, cheerful people celebrating independence and the hustle
and bustle of big cities and images of refugees and military planes. (video)
2.
The xx, “I Dare You”: “I Dare You,” the third
single from The xx’s critically acclaimed new album ‘I See You,’ has the same
back and forth conversational feel that the album’s first single “On Hold” does.
It’s probably about as playful as the band can get without breaking from their laid
back sound. The video, which stars Paris Jackson (Michael Jackson’s daughter)
and ‘Stranger Things’ star Millie Bobby Brown, features two young couples (and
Brown) exploring a seemingly abandoned stone building. (video)
3.
St. Vincent, “New York”: St. Vincent really
shows off her voice on “New York,” a slow jam sweetly and nonchalantly sung
over a driving kick drum beat. It’s a little on the sad side, panning out like
a letter to a lost loved one, but that doesn’t stop it from being impactful and
memorable. The only thing that would make this song sound even better is if it
were acoustic. (video)
4.
Nothing More, “Go To War”: “Go To War” is a
commentary on the aggressiveness of our current cultural landscape wrapped in
hard rock guitars and hard-hitting lyrics. The song itself is effective, using
the same aggression being sung about to drive
home their point that just because you have opposing views doesn’t mean you
have to “go to war” and lose sight of the good relationships in your life. (video)
5.
The
Killers, “The Man”: I talked about “The Man” when it came out last week,
but The Killers have now released a music video for the song and it pretty much
goes along with what I was saying. The song comes off as cocky, just as Brandon
Flowers’ many characters do in the video. However, by the end, all the
characters come out feeling a bit defeated, making the song seem more like a
commentary of people who actually act that way. (video)
6.
Sheer Mag, “Suffer Me”: “Suffer Me,” the third
single off Sheer Mag’s upcoming debut album, has elements of 70’s funk and 80’s
new wave that give this really unique, retro groove. The performance parts of
the video add to this aura, as they are shot in this smoke-y, soft-lit room that
make it look like it was shot during the disco era. (video)
7.
Arcade Fire, “Signs of Life”: Arcade Fire has
released another video this week, this time for the song “Signs of Life.” The
song’s 70’s groove, which falls somewhere in between disco and rock, draws you
in and keeps you bobbing you head to the beat. (video)
These are some of our favorite songs and music videos that
were released this week. Check these out and enjoy the long holiday weekend
with some new tunes.
