As always, this has been a pretty good week for music. We
saw new music and videos from current pop favorites like Lorde, Coldplay and
Bruno Mars, as well as established artists like The New Pornographers, Mario
and Trombone Shorty. There were also some great tracks from up-and-comers like
Sylvan Esso and Stolen Jars. Supergroup Dreamcar also made their debut,
bringing together members of two formidable 90s/2000s bands.
Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s top music outlet, wants you to
start your weekend off with the best in new music. That is why we have compiled
this list of our favorite new songs and music videos from the past week.
1.
Trombone Shorty, “Here Come The Girls”: This
song is pure funk. The horns provide the framework for the song’s
energy-charged melody and Trombone Shorty (aka Troy Andrews)’s soulful vocals.
It’s just a fun song to listen to and a great introduction to his upcoming
album, ‘Parking Lot Symphony.’ (video)
2.
Sylvan Esso, “Die Young”: Esso shines on “Die
Young,” bringing a lot of personality to this indie-pop track. I enjoy the
retro-sort of vibe the song blends in, hanging 60s-tinged vocals on perfectly
synced snare beats. (video)
3.
Mario, “Let Me Help You”: I think I liked the
video for this song more than the song itself. Mario’s perfectly choreographed beach
dancing reminded me of 90s/2000s pop and R&B videos, the same kind of
videos that made him so popular in the first place. The song isn’t bad though. It
also maintains some of the same old-school vibe as the video with its
treat-you-right lyrics, simple melody and easy drum beat. (video)
4.
Dreamcar, “Kill For Candy”: The first single
from No Doubt / AFI super group, Dreamcar, “Kill For Candy” has an 80s-synthpop
vibe that’s sticks in your head. Davey Havok’s dramatic vocals are a match made
in heaven for the style, while Tony Kanal, Tom Dumont and Adrian Young come out
of their ska-punk shell and are as tight as ever. (video)
5.
The New Pornographers, “High Ticket Attractions”:
“High Ticket Attractions” is a fast-paced indie-rock piece. The guitars power through
the entire song without stopping, a consistent undertone keeping it together
and focus. It doesn’t seem like that chaotic a song, but the video perhaps
helps lead the viewer in that direction, which ultimately doesn’t seem that far
off in terms of the energy it exerts. (video)
6.
Stolen Jars, “Eliot”: “Eliot” kind of starts off
slow, but the symphonic/horn breakdown in the middle really picks it up. When
the female singer comes back in at the end, the listener is already perked up
and can get more into what the song has to offer. That is, it’s spacey vocals
and guitar-less power. (video)
7.
Lorde, “Green Light”: Lorde has been out of the
spotlight for the last four years, carefully plotting out what she wanted to
say with her next album. Now, we have “Green Light,” the singer’s first single
from her upcoming album, ‘Melodrama.’ Lorde shows a more hopeful, expressive
side in this song. She sings with the same kind of spaced out vocal as before,
but this time about love instead of her past. The video sees the singer dancing
in the streets singing along to her song. (video)
8.
Coldplay,
“Hypnotised”: “Hypnotised” starts off slowly with a beautiful piano
introduction before we hear from Chris Martin’s careful vocals, a sound we
really haven’t heard from the band in many years. In a way, the song kind of
brings back some of the indie-elements of early Coldplay while marrying it with
their newer pop vibe. (video)
These were just some of our favorite new tracks and music
videos from the past week. Use these as a jumping off point in your own path of
music discovery. Have a great weekend and happy listening!
