Vinyl Bay 777’s Favorite Songs of 2018

2018 was an amazing year for music. From big artists who dominated the year’s musical discourse to up-and-comers who really made an impact, there was no shortage of great tunes out there for our listening pleasure. And now that we only have a few more days until 2019 begins, this is the perfect opportunity to step back and remember the music that really stood out.

As 2018 comes to a close, Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, is taking a look back at some of our favorite songs from the past year. From hip-hop and pop to indie and rock, here are eight songs that we hoped you loved as much as we did.

1.       Childish Gambino, “This Is America”: I’m not even a fan of today’s rap style and this is a great song. “This Is America” harnesses the power of words to make a bold, powerful statement about our culture. It makes itself well understood, using pacing to make its message digestible. The song also had one of the best videos this year and really got people talking. (video)

2.       Superorganism, “Everybody Wants To Be Famous”: Low key and unassuming, “Everybody Wants To Be Famous” was a breakout single for Superorganism this year. The song’s mild tempo, minimalist feel and confident-yet-odd lyrics are a testament to the band’s off the beaten path aesthetic and is made for the internet age. (video)

3.       Courtney Barnett, “Nameless, Faceless”: Courtney Barnett isn’t afraid to “tell it like it is” in her lyrics. “Nameless, Faceless” is proof of that. Backed by a psychedelic-ish guitar melody, the song serves out a perfectly worded response to the differences men and women face out in public. During the verses, she doesn’t back down as she nonchalantly reprimands a guy for putting her down and wonders what happened to him to make him say something like that. (video)

4.       Death Cab For Cutie, “Gold Rush”: Everyone can relate to the feeling when everything around you seems to be changing without you. Death Cab For Cutie captures that perfectly in “Gold Rush.” Written by Ben Gibbard about how the neighborhood he grew up in has changed, he paints a vivid picture of his feelings through metaphor and melody. It’s far from the melancholy days of “I Will Follow You Into the Dark,” but just as emotional and grabbing. (video)

5.       The 1975, “It’s Not Living (If It’s Not With You)”: There is a certain cold, 80s electronic element that permeates The 1975’s recent singles like “Love It If We Made It” and “Give Yourself A Try” (though both do have their positive points). But “It’s Not Living” feels different. While still clearly 80s-inspired, it has the bounce of a synth-pop track. It’s upbeat (even if the lyrics aren’t) and catchy. (video)

6.       Dan + Shay, “Tequila”: Country duo Dan + Shay had a ton of success this year, including two number one songs on country radio. The first of these was “Tequila,” a wistful track about the things that make you remember that someone special. It’s pleasantly somber yet joyful at the same time. (video)

7.       Barns Courtney, “99”: It seemed to be a theme this year in music to reminisce about the 1990s. However, none of those songs quite capture the essence of growing up in that decade like Barns Courtney’s “99.” Its nostalgic for the era, but doesn’t’ hit you over the head with references or that “simpler time” feeling. Instead he relates a love story in the lyrics, using a swirling guitar melody to wrap around it and provide a funky, totally unique vibe. (video)

8.       Marshmello feat. Bastille, “Happier”: At this point “Happier” feels a bit played out, as it has been a major crossover radio hit for both EDM DJ Marshmello and rock band Bastille. But its popularity is a function of it being a pretty brilliant collaboration. The song’s mood is decidedly bright for lyrics that depict a guy deciding that he has to leave his significant other in order for that person to be happy. But that melody and infectious beat is what adds to the song’s appeal. (video)

New Year’s is a time to reflect on the year that was, as well as a time to celebrate the potential of the new one in front of us. Music has always been great at conveying this, as there are many songs that present this sentiment both lyrically and melodically.

Previously, we gave you a list of rock songs to help you ring in the New Year. Now, with 2019 only a week away, Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, it back with even more songs to make your New Year’s Eve playlist shine. From party anthems to reflective wishes for “better” days, here are five more songs about the New Year to get you ready for 2019.

1.       Daft Punk, “One More Time”: Though not really about the coming of the New Year, “One More Time” is an iconic 1990s dance club banger about celebrating what you have. Like the song says, “don’t wait” until its “too late,” just dance and celebrate one more time. Make this party count. (video)

2.       Goo Goo Dolls, “Better Days”: The New Year is often thought of as a time when people can get a fresh start in life. The Goo Goo Dolls’ “Better Days” speaks to this, wishing that those who need it will come up on better times in the coming year. Take that clean slate and make life better, because as the song says, “Tonight’s the night the world begins again.” (video)

3.       Bon Jovi, “New Year’s Day”: “New Year’s Day” encompasses every feeling one has about the New Year in one song. It laments the passage of time, it looks ahead to happy days and how we live life. But most importantly, it toasts to the coming year and its promise of a new beginning. Amen to that. (video)

4.       Counting Crows, “A Long December”: “A Long December” finds Counting Crows frontman Adam Duritz reflectively looking back at a hectic year that seems to have been filled with heartache and pain. He hopes that the next year will be “better than the last,” which is something we can all relate to at this time of year. (video)

5.       ABBA, “Happy New Year”: Much of “Happy New Year” is about New Year’s Day itself once the pomp and circumstance of New Year’s Eve is over. This new day feels different and unknown in both good and bad ways. However, the important thing to take from the song comes from its chorus, which wishes that the New Year will bring unity and that our hopes and dreams will be closer to fulfilled. (video)

New Year's Eve Musical Television Specials to Ring in 2019

Watching the ball drop on New Year’s Eve is a time-honored tradition in New York. Times Square is filled with revelers who come down just to witness the LED-lit orb usher in the coming year. However, many people dislike the chaos of it all, making it as much a tradition to stay home and watch the event unfurl on television.

Music is often a deciding factor in which New Year’s Eve program you tune into. Over the last month, news has been creeping out about which programs will get which performers. And from what we know so far, between all the specials, a lot of this year’s hottest artists will be present to ring in 2019.

With New Year’s Eve only a week-and-a-half away, Vinyl Bay777, Long Island’s music outlet, is taking a look at some of the musical specials ushering in 2019. From pop and R&B to country and rock, here are the biggest television options to help you make the best New Year’s Eve choice possible.

1.       ‘Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve’: Ryan Seacrest fills the shoes of Dick Clark for a 12^th year to ring in the New Year. The special takes the celebration national with musical acts taking the stage in three different time zones. Christina Aguilera is the big headliner this year with additional performances by Bastille, Dan + Shay, New Kids on the Block and more taking place in New York City, Camila Cabello, The Chainsmokers, Halsey and more in California, and Florida Georgia Line in New Orleans. (8PM, ABC)

2.       ‘New Year’s with Steve Harvey’: After the success of last year’s broadcast, Steve Harvey and Maria Menounos return for a second year as hosts of Fox’s New Year’s Eve celebration. The special will include performances from Sting, Florence & the Machine, Jason Aldean, Robin Thicke, Juanes and Why Don’t We, among others, as well as appearances by comedians Ken Jeong and  Kenan Thompson and Fox’s NFL Sunday commentators. (8PM, Fox)

3.       ‘New Year’s Eve with Carson Daly’: Learning from last year’s New Years programming flub, NBC is bringing back their Carson Daly-hosted holiday eve program.  Joining Daly as co-hosts will be ‘SNL’s’ Leslie Jones and Chrissy Teigen. The event will have performances from Kelly Clarkson, Andy Grammer, John Legend, Blake Shelton and headliner Diana Ross. Also performing are Keith Urban and Brett Young, though their sets will be telecast from Nashville’s ‘Music City Midnight’ event. (10PM, NBC)

4.       ‘New Year’s Eve Live’: Anderson Cooper takes you into the New Year for his 16^th time and second with co-host Andy Cohen. The straight-man/funny-man nature of their relationship made last year’s broadcast the network’s most watched NYE of all time. No music announced yet, but there are sure to be a lot of celebrities dropping by. (8PM, CNN)

This year’s New Years Eve programming line-ups are filled with some of the hottest artists in music today. Whichever you watch, there are sure to be some great performances leading up to the midnight ball drop.

Year in Review: Vinyl Bay 777’s Top Songs of 2017 (Part Two)

Sunday night marks the end of 2017. This is usually a time to reflect on all the good and bad that has happened over the last year. That also goes for music, as this is also a great time to look back at all the great tunes released in 2017.

Earlier this week, Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, brought you eight of our favorite songs of 2017. However, eight songs don’t do all the great music released this year any justice. That is why we are back with eight more songs that grabbed our attention this year.

1.       Haim, “Want You Back”: Sister trio Haim made the comeback people were waiting for in 2017 when they released their sophomore album,’ Something to Tell You.’ The album was worth the wait, especially first single “Want You Back.” Harking back to classic rock and pop songs of the 1970s and 80s, the song has an infectious groove that makes you want to get up and dance. 2.       Enter Shikari, “Live Outside”: Filled with electronic fanfare and punk rock energy, “Live Outside” bombards you with so much power and bravado that you have to take notice. With such a strong single, it’s a shame these guys didn’t get more hype in the United States. (video)

3.       Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee, “Despacito”: Arguably the biggest song of the year, “Despacito” too the world by storm, becoming the most popular Spanish song since 1996’s “Macarena.” It also helps that the hook is so catchy it gets stuck in your head. (video)

4.       Harry Styles, “Sign of the Times”: You would think that a former boy band member would follow in the same pop path as his band, but that wasn’t the case for One Direction’s Harry Styles. The singer decided to take a more indie-rock approach to his self-titled debut album, introducing it to the world with lead single “Sign of the Times.” A down-tempo track heavily influenced by British rock, the song’s piano-driven melody is both beautiful and memorable. 5.       Carly Rae Jepsen, “Cut to the Feeling”: Jepsen is always good for a feel good pop song and she provided that in spades this year with “Cut to the Feeling.” The song has a chorus that screams out in joy. Pitchfork called it “bombastic,” which is a great word for this song. (video)

6.       Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, “Hope the High Road”: “Hope the High Road” is a politically pointed alt-country piece about taking the “high road” over those that are trying to bring us down. Isbell’s no-nonsense lyricism and strong, hummable melody compliment the song’s biting theme perfectly. (video)

7.       PVRIS, “What’s Wrong”: PVRIS came out strong this year with “What’s Wrong,” the first single from their sophomore album ‘All We Know of Heaven, All We Need of Hell.’ The song has a strong and powerful melody that grabs you and keeps you invested as it rises and falls. It has all the theatrics of an Evanescence song with its footing squarely on the hardcore side of pop-punk. “What’s Wrong” also arguably happens to have one of the best videos of the year. (video)

8.       Courtney Barnett & Kurt Vile, “Over Everything”: Of all the indie-rock duets, Courtney Barnett and & Kurt Vile’s collaboration on 2017’s ‘Lotta Sea Lice’ was one of the most anticipated and one of the best. “Over Everything,” the album’s first single, proves that the two singer-songwriters have great chemistry, as their vocal and writing styles mesh well. The lyrics play out like a stream of consciousness conversation between two musicians talking about their processes, which is probably exactly what this song is. (video)

Rock Out into the New Year with These Live Shows in New York This Weekend (December 29-31, 2017)

New Years is a time to both reflect on the year that has passed and celebrate the incoming one with open arms. Why not send off 2017 and welcome in 2018 the right way with one more wild night of rock music by checking out a live show?

There are a lot of shows happening in New York surrounding the New Year. Phish will be making their 10^th New Years appearance at Madison Square Garden. Gogol Bordello, Matisyahu and Glassjaw will be bringing their tours through the area this weekend. Dillinger Escape Plan will be playing their final show ever. And that doesn’t even account for all the club and dance parties being thrown to ring in 2018.

Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, loves live music. That’s why we’ve been scouring the internet for the weekend’s hottest shows in New York. Here are eight that we think will bring 2017 to the perfect end.

1.       Gogol Bordello: Don some purple and check out gypsy punks Gogol Bordello as they take on Brooklyn tonight. The band is currently in the middle of a world tour behind their latest effort, ‘Seekers and Finders.’ (Friday, Brooklyn Steel)

2.       Patent Pending: If you missed Long Island pop-punk band Patent Pending’s annual X-Mosh show in Amityville last weekend, the band will be back in New York tonight to play their debut album, ‘Save Each Other, The Whales are Doing Just Fine,’ in its entirety again. The band will be joined by original vocalist Michael Ragosta for the show. These guys have an amazing stage presence, bringing together catchy music, tongue-in-cheek humor, “choreographed dancing” and more. (Friday, Knitting Factory)

3.       Matisyahu: Jewish reggae sensation Matisyahu’s Broken Crowns tour comes to Long Island tonight. Appealing to music lovers of all faiths, his shows are both spiritual and energetic. Not a bad way to spend a Shabbat evening. (Friday, The Paramount Huntington)

4.       Phish: Phish return to Madison Square Garden this weekend for their annual New Year’s shows. The run started last night and goes through Sunday, bringing the band’s Garden shows up to 17 for the year (17 in 17)and 56 in total. This is the band’s 10^th New Years run at the famed venue (Friday – Sunday, Madison Square Garden)

5.       Dillinger Escape Plan: This is your final chance to see New Jersey metalcore band Dillinger Escape Plan live. The band will be calling it quits after tonight’s show. Opening the show will be Code Orange and Daughters. (Friday, Terminal 5)

6.       Glassjaw: Glassjaw released their third album, ‘Material Control,’ earlier this month, their first full album in 15 years. Now the band is back on the road, playing Long Island this weekend. New York hardcore legends The Cro-Mags will be opening, so this is looking to be an amazing show. (Saturday, The Paramount Huntington)

7.       Macy Gray: Macy Gray’s 2016 jazz album, ‘Stripped,’ was very well received by critics and fans alike, moving her career in a new direction.  The raspy-voiced singer will be continuing her foray into jazz this weekend, playing four shows at New York jazz club Iridium to ring in the New Year. (Saturday & Sunday, Iridium)

8.       They Might Be Giants: They Might Be Giants will be returning to New York this weekend to ring in the New Year. The band, who’s quirky brand of alt-rock has made them fan favorites, is getting ready to release their 20^th album, ‘I Like Fun,’ in January. (Saturday & Sunday, Music Hall of Williamsburg)

Year in Review: Vinyl Bay 777’s Top Songs of 2017

Sunday night marks the end of 2017. This is usually a time to reflect on all the good and bad that has happened over the last year. That also goes for music, as this is also a great time to look back at all the great tunes released in 2017.

A lot happened in the world of music in 2017. Ed Sheeran, Kesha, Eminem, Haim and Taylor Swift, among others, all had highly-anticipated new releases that had everyone talking all year long. Artists like Portugal. The Man and St. Vincent were able to attain mainstream success.

Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, would like to take this opportunity to look back at some of our own favorite songs from 2017. Here are eight that grabbed our attention throughout the year, and in some cases launched the artist into the mainstream.

1.       Portugal. The Man, “Feel It Still”: Portugal. The Man had one of the biggest songs of the year with “Feel It Still,” the second single from their eighth album, ‘Woodstock.’ Aided by its placement in Vitamin Water’s television commercials (which are still being aired months later), the song has this infectious groove that sucks you in and doesn’t let go. Singer John Gorley’s falsetto is intriguing too, as if trying to emulate the voice of the song’s character, not just tell her story. The band released two other singles from the album, and while “Live in the Moment” also became popular, it never had the reach that “Feel It Still” did. (video)

2.       Neck Deep, “In Bloom”: Neck Deep really broke out in 2017 with their single “In Bloom.” Set to a catchy melody with a solid, memorable hook in the chorus, “In Bloom” is a reflective track about self-improvement. The song’s success helped the band’s third album, ‘The Peace and the Panic,’ become their best-selling to date. (video)

3.       Ed Sheeran, “Shape of You”: Ed Sheeran’s return in 2017 with his third album, ‘÷,’ was massive. Since the album’s release in March, you couldn’t get away from him (not that you would necessarily want to). Out of all the singles released from the album, “Shape of You” arguably had the most impact this year. With its dance-club beat and catchy melody, it became the most streamed song of the year on Spotify and spent a fifth of the year on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. (video)

4.       St. Vincent, “Los Ageless”: St. Vincent had a big year in 2017. Her new album, ‘Masseduction,’ reached number 10 on the Billboard 200, her highest placement on the chart yet. The album’s popularity was preceded by three outstanding, unique singles. We’ve chosen “Los Ageless” for this list because of its memorable 80s new wave/synth-pop vibe. (video)

5.       P!nk, “What About Us”: P!nk has never been one to shy away from wearing her heart on her sleeve in her music. Such is evidenced in her bold, political new album, ‘Beautiful Trauma,’ and especially its first single, “What About Us.” The song is a passionate plea for answers in a world that feels like it is swallowing us whole. It helps that this plea is backed by a beautiful melody and biting lyrics. (video)

6.       Kesha, “Praying”: Kesha has been through a lot over the last few years which led to a long drought in music from the boisterous singer. That changed in 2017 when she released ‘Rainbow’ and it’s strong lead single “Praying.” The song debuted a new, more mature side of Kesha that we hadn’t heard previously, one that shows off her vocal abilities and passion, proving that she doesn’t need to seem drunk to make a good song. 7.       Paramore, “Hard Times”: If Paramore’s self-titled 2013 album broke the band into the mainstream, 2017’s ‘After Laughter’ proves that that is where they belong. The album moves the band further towards 80s-inspired new wave, synth-pop and funk, as evidenced on lead single “Hard Times.” The song is an upbeat track about falling on “hard times” and feeling useless, a common theme among the songs on the new album. 8.       Linkin Park, “Heavy”: Linkin Park went in a completely different direction with 2017’s ‘One More Light.’ Known for their mixture of hip-hop beats and melodic rock, the band focused heavily on the melodic part of their sound. The change was very polarizing, but it arguably led to some of their most poignant work. “Heavy,” the album’s lead single, is one of the band’s most emotional (behind the album’s title single), as well as one of their strongest lyrically and melodically. The song took them out of this box and proved that they could be more than just a nu-metal band. (video)

Seven Songs Timed To Start the New Year off Right

A new meme has popped up over the last couple of weeks where people suggest how to perfectly time a song so that the best part coincides with the stroke of midnight. For example, Bull Moose Records tweeted on December 17 that if you listen to Phil Collins’ “In The Air Tonight” at exactly 11:56:44, the song’s massive drum fill will come in right as the ball drops. Over the last few weeks, more and more people have been participating, giving their own suggestions for songs and television moments to play, as well as songs to leave behind in the New Year.

There are a lot of great moments in music that are worthy of highlighting the New Year’s arrival. That’s why Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, is hopping on the trend and giving you some of our own time stamp suggestions. Here are seven to highlight your countdown to 2018.

1.       Queen, “Bohemian Rhapsody”: Okay, the first one is not our own. Ultimate Classic Rock suggests playing “Bohemian Rhapsody” at exactly 11:55:53 PM or approximately 4 minutes and 10 seconds in. That’s the point at which the song will transition into that final, iconic guitar riff, leading everyone to jump up and down, head bang and go crazy. (video)

2.       Queen, “We Are the Champions”: With a chord structure and feel similar to a hard rock version of “Auld Lang Syne,” you could easily play “We Are the Champions” during your count down too. Start playing at 11:59:30, or about 30 seconds into the song, to get that build-up before the bravado of the first chorus. (video)

3.       Blur, “Song 2”: “Song 2” is two minutes of non-stop Brit-pop energy, perfect for getting any party started. And if you start the song at 11:59:44 (approximately 16 seconds into the song), you can have that iconic “Woo Hoo” shout in the New Year! (video)

4.       Portugal. The Man, “Live in the Moment”: The band’s second single from their latest album, “Live in the Moment” begs the listener to do just that in the catchiest way possible. It’s also a great sentiment to bring into the New Year with you. Turn it on at 11:59:22 (approximately 38 seconds into the song) to launch into the first “la las” of the song. (video)

5.       Chumbawamba, “Tubthumpting”: A song you’ve probably heard at every party since the mid-1990s, “Tubthumping” never fails to get people dancing. Set this song up at 11:59:50, right as you’re getting ready to count down, so midnight starts off with a jump. The song doubles as a reminder that you’ll keep getting back up in the New Year, because people will “never keep [you] down.” (video)

6.       The Isley Brothers, “Shout”: “Shout” is another song that you hear at just about every party. It’s just such a happy, joyous song. So why not bring that into your New Years countdown. The whole song is over the top in energy, but if you start the track up at 11:56:30 (3:30 minutes into the song), the song will be getting “a little bit louder now” 3:30 minutes into it until it bursts out again with those “heys” at midnight, 15 seconds later.
