Another work week has come and gone and the extended Labor Day
weekend is now in full swing. For many, this is a chance to take in the last
remaining bits of summer before the cooler fall weather begins. While you’re barbequeing and making your last
attempts at getting to the beach, why not also take this opportunity to take a
look back and add some the week’s best new tunes to your weekend playlist?
This has been a busy week saw the release of a lot of great
new songs and music videos. Sia
premiered her new collaboration, LSD, with Labrinth and Diplo while Kesha’s
collaboration with The Struts ona new version of their latest single hit the
internet as well. Heck, Eminem
even released an entire album of new music out of the blue. However, it was
rock that really shined this week. Twenty One Pilots, Good
Charlotte, The Decemberists and Escape The Fate all came out with new songs.
Panic! At The Disco, AJR, and The 1975 released new videos for their previously
released singles. We also got some great new tunes from up-and-coming artists
like WSTR and Bry.
Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, loves new music.
That’s why we’ve scoured the internet for the best new songs and music videos of
the past week. Here are nine to get your Labor Day weekend started off right.
1.
Bry, “Burn”: “Burn” is a very easy song to take
in. A simple acoustic track, the song’s laid-back indie-rock style comes across
sweet, honest and endearing. It’s the kind of song you can listen to over and
over again. (video)
2.
Lauv, “Superhero”: What hit me most about “Superhero”
was the storytelling. The premise, which Lauv explains in the beautiful video
that accompanies the song, follows a guy who had found his perfect girl but
lost her one night after a fight and instantly regrets the loss. Starting with
just an acoustic guitar line and vocal layering, Lauv relates the story with
honesty, building the instrumentation as the story builds and finally letting
it back down to just vocals as it ends. (video)
3.
Escape The Fate, “I Am Human”: With “I Am Human,”
Escape The Fate puts its own spin on the “don’t judge a book by its cover”
adage using power and style. The song’s melody sounds very much like Breaking
Benjamin’s “I Will Not Bow,” though it’s lyrical content screams human
complexity in the same way Meredith Brooks’ “B****” did two decades ago. In a
world where differences can often be seen as a bad thing, the song reminds
people, especially in the hardcore community, that even though we may be
different, everyone is still human. (video)
4.
The
1975, “TooTimeTooTimeTooTime”: After hearing it a few times, “TooTimeTooTimeTooTime”
really starts to grow on you. The song’s dancehall cadence makes this song
about infidelity in the digital dating era feel more upbeat than its subject
matter suggests. That being said, it’s hard not to get sucked into its breezy
feel. (video)
5.
The Struts feat. Kesha,
“Body Talks”: This week, The Struts released a new version of their single “Body
Talks,” this time sung as a duet with Kesha. The collaboration adds a
back-and-forth to the song that you (obviously) don’t get with the original, giving
you a female perspective that is just as raunchy as the male one. Kesha and
frontman Luke Spiller’s voices work well together and their over-the-top stage presences
complement each other’s energy. (video)
6.
Panic! At The Disco, “High Hopes”: Following his
high-flying performance at the MTV VMAs last week, Panic! At The Disco has
released a video for “High Hopes.” The clip features frontman Brendon Urie
walking up the side of a building in downtown LA as he sings the song’s
uplifting, “always reach for your dreams” lyrics. As he gains ground, onlookers
below cheer him on until he gets to the top and breaks into a full band refrain
of the chorus. It’s an obvious comparison to the steady rise his career has had
since the band started in 2004 and a fitting video for such a catchy earworm of
a song. (video)
7.
WSTR, “Silly Me”: WSTR’s latest single “Silly Me”
is a fun pop-punk song that reinforces the band’s penchant for not taking
themselves too seriously. The song’s goofy charm is reminiscent of early Simple
Plan or Bowling for Soup. It also doesn’t
hurt that the song’s spunky melody and Celtic flourishes make it hard to get
out of your head once you hear it. (video)
8.
Twenty One Pilots, “My Blood”: The fourth song
released from the band’s upcoming album ‘Trench,’ “My Blood” has a jazzier, more
R&B-tinged melody than what people are used to from the genre-bending band.
It’s an experiment that works, providing a fuzzed out, ethereal feel that makes
it a good track to chill out to. (video)
9.
The
Decemberists, “Sucker’s Prayer”: “Sucker’s Prayer” is a very self-aware
song. Dealing with the dark theme of a failed suicide attempt, the song doesn’t
let itself get bogged down, instead using its words to communicate those
feelings rationally. The melody helps too, blending country jangle with indie
rock “weirdness” (as frontman Colin Meloy calls
it) to tell the story in an almost bard-like fashion. (video)
