The first weekend of spring is upon us. As all of us are
trying to forget the late-season snow that now blankets the area and think
warmer thoughts, this weekend will be a great time to finally get out and break
free of this crazy weather. And what better way to do that than to head out to
a live show.
New York’s music scene is always bustling with shows big and
small, and this weekend is no different. There are a lot of rock shows
happening around the area including a record release show from Jack White, a charity
event headlined by O.A.R. and four nights of MGMT. Hardcore fans will have the
opportunity to see rare shows from I Am the Avalanche and Nightmare of You, as
well as tours from Circa Survive and Norma Jean. Even 90s R&B fans have
something to look forward to as Brandy will be taking the stage for a few
one-off shows this weekend.
Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, has once again
scoured the internet for the hottest shows happening in the New York area this
weekend. Here are eight that we think will be worth braving the snow and ice to
see.
1.
Jack White: The former White
Stripes frontman released his third solo album, ‘Boarding House Reach,’
today. Tonight’s show marks the second of three album release shows the singer
is doing to promote the album. Don’t worry if you don’t have tickets though, as
the entire show is being livestreamed on Twitter. (Friday, Warsaw)
2.
O.A.R.: The ‘Concert for Dreams’ takes place
tonight, raising money for the Garden of Dreams Foundation to aid in helping
children in the tri-state area combat “homelessness, extreme poverty and
illness.” Headlined by O.A.R., the show will also feature performances from Run-DMC’s
Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, Gavin
DeGraw, Counting Crows’ Adam Duritz, fun.’s Nate Ruess, Goo Goo Dolls’ John
Rzeznik, Matt Nathanson and Robert Randolph. (Friday, Beacon Theatre)
3.
Brandy:
Known for her pop-y 1990s R&B singles, Brandy is back. Over the last few
years, the singer has been back on television and Broadway. In 2016 she
released a new single, “Beggin’ & Pleadin’,” and is supposedly working on
her first new album in six years. Check out Brandy tonight as she breaks out
all the hits during a pair of one-off shows: a solo gig tonight in New York and
with Ashanti in Connecticut Saturday. (Friday, B.B. King Blues Club)
4.
MGMT:
MGMT released their fourth album, ‘Little Dark Age,’ this past February to high
praise from critics and fans alike. The band ends the first leg of their US
tour in New York this weekend with three shows in Brooklyn. They will also be
sticking around into the week, playing the opening show at the new Sony Hall in
Times Square on Tuesday. (Saturday, Kings Theatre; Sunday & Monday,
Brooklyn Steel)
5.
Circa
Survive: Circa Survive kicks off their spring tour this weekend. The
hardcore band released their latest album, ‘The Amulet,’ in September, their
first release on Hopeless Records. Foxing and Hail the Sun will be opening the
show. (Saturday, The Paramount Huntington)
6.
The English Beat: Get some 2-tone ska into your
weekend with one of the originals of the genre, The English Beat. The Dave
Wakeling-led US offshoot of the band will be releasing their first album, ‘Here
We Go Love,’ this May and are playing a string of small club dates this spring
leading up to release day to celebrate. (Sunday & Monday, City Winery)
7.
I Am the Avalanche & Nightmare of You: New
York punk rockers I Am the Avalanche and New York indie-rockers Nightmare of
You have teamed up for a few east coast shows in the last week, culminating
this Sunday in a big hometown show. This is the first time I Am the Avalanche’s
original line-up will be playing together in four years. Nightmare of You has
also said that these are their only shows of the year. (Sunday, Gramercy
Theatre)
8.
Norma Jean: Metalcore band Norma Jean has been
getting nostalgic this month. The band is currently on a US tour playing their
third album, ‘Redeemer,’ in its entirety.
Along for the ride are Gideon, Toothgrinder and Grey Haven, who will be
opening the shows. (Sunday, Knitting Factory)
End your winter hibernation by heading out to see some live
music in New York this weekend. Check out one of the shows above or any of the
other amazing shows happening around the area and start your spring off the
right way.
