Music Industry Revenue Up in 2017, Digital Album Sales Succumb to Physical

Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, takes a brief look at RIAA’s 2017 Year-End findings

The Recording Industry Association of America’s year-end Revenue Statistics came out last week, detailing the state of music sales in the United States in 2017. Indicating that the industry as a whole has grown in revenue from the previous year, even though albums sales continue to lag.

According to the RIAA, music industry revenue is at the highest it’s been in a decade. At an estimated $8.7 billion retail value and $5.9 billon wholesale value, the industry grew 16.5% and 12.6%, respectively, over 2016. The chart report also marks that this is the second year in a row that revenues grew, the first time since 1999 that this has happened.

The biggest platform for this growth was streaming services. Making up 65% of revenue in 2017, paid subscriptions, streaming radio and ad-supported on-demand services made an astounding 43% leap from 2016. Paid subscriptions in particular made for much of that domination, growing 63% and making up 47% of the music industry’s revenue, approximately $4 billion.

With the growth of streaming, sales across the board have been on the decline. The RIAA found that digital sales were hit the hardest, dropping 25% over all in 2017, making up $1.3 billion in revenue. This goes for both singles and albums, which individually declined 25% and 24%, respectively. The RIAA remarked in the report that this is the first time since 2011 that physical format revenue exceeded that of digital.

In contrast, the physical album sales decline wasn’t as drastic as it was in years past. In 2017 there was only a 4% decline in value over the last year, making up $1.5 billion of the industry’s revenue. The decline is slower than it has been in previous years, thanks mostly to the vinyl resurgence, up 10% in 2017, as CD shipments once again fell, this time by 6%.

Earlier this year, Buzzangle and Nielsen released their year-end, coming to many of the same conclusions as the RIAA. Both had reported that there was an increase in music consumption in 2017 sparked by an all-time high in streaming. They also picked up on the drop in digital downloads and less-drastic decline of physical sales.

According to the RIAA’s 2017 Revenue Statistics, the music industry has been picking up a little in the last couple of years. Revenue is at its highest in a decade, thanks to streaming’s increased foothold on the industry, now making up the largest part of the music industry’s revenue. Even though physical and digital sales continue to struggle, it’s slowed pace of decline and the increase in vinyl sales come as a shimmer of hope for physical music lovers.

Week in Review: New Songs and Music Videos You Need to Check Out (March 18-24, 2018)

The weekend is finally here! That makes it the perfect time to sit back, relax and catch up on all the new music you may have missed from the past week.

This past week saw the release of a lot of great new songs and music videos, especially when it comes to rock and alternative. Jack White put out a new video for his single “Over and Over and Over” just in time for his new album to drop. Panic! at the Disco put out a new video along with the announcement of a new album. We also got new videos from Escape the Fate, Marilyn Manson, Bleachers and Echosmith.

Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, loves new music. That’s why we’ve compiled this list of some of our favorite new songs and music videos from the past week. Here are eight that we recommend for your weekend listening / viewing pleasure.

1.       Panic! at the Disco, “Say Amen (Saturday Night)”: Following 2016’s breakout ‘Death of a Bachelor,’ the band’s first number one album, Panic! at the Disco announced a new album, ‘Pray for the Wicked,’ this week, along with the release of two new songs. Intended as the album’s first single, “Say Amen” is sonically closer to some of the songs on ‘Too Weird to Live, Too Rare to Die!.’ The song features a few sampled spots and strong, less-flourish-y vocals. Not to mention the action-filled video is very creative and captivating. (video)

2.       Escape the Fate, “Broken Heart”: There have been a lot of videos in the last five years that have attempted to incorporate technology into their plots to varying degrees of success. Escape the Fate’s new video for their catchy melodic hard rock track “Broken Heart” is one of the better ones. Starting out with the band playing the song in a non-descript room with black walls, we come to learn that this is a video being played on someone’s phone. As she gets calls and texts and generally goes about getting ready for her day, the band gets jostled around with the phone’s movements. (video)

3.       Bleachers, “Alfie’s Song (Not So Typical Love Song)”: Bleachers finally released a video for “Alfie’s Song,” the band’s contribution to the ‘Love Simon’ soundtrack. The song itself is a fun, upbeat, bouncy track that sounds like it belongs in an indie rom-com (perfectly enough). Playing off the song’s lyrics, the video turns the typical love story ending on its head by having Jack Antonoff ruining every shot of the video until the girl comes to find him instead. It’s breakdown of the “fourth wall” is effective, motivating the rest of the video’s atypical love story to progress. (video)

4.       RaeLynn, “Queens Don’t”: Country newcomer and ‘The Voice’ semifinalist RaeLynn’s latest single “Queens Don’t” is an anthem for women’s empowerment. The song’s confident and strong lyrics are delivered with a melody that is pure country pop catchiness. This will definitely get stuck in your head and leave you singing it with as much sass as RaeLynn does. (video)

5.       Rae Morris, “Someone Out There”: “Someone Out There” is a beautifully sung reminder that there is always someone who loves you whether you know it or not. Its piano-driven melody helps in creating a sense of sweetness and honesty in the song that is great for those quiet moments. (video)

6.       Oliver Hazard, “Hey Louise”: With simple guitar strumming and easy vocals, “Hey Louise” sounds like a breezy summer day. Its melody sounds a little like The Shins, though far less polished. (video)

7.       Echosmith, “Over My Head”: Channeling the same slinky indie-pop vibe that first got the band noticed, “Over My Head” takes “Cool Kids” and gives it a little more pop and a lot more anger. Sydney Sierota’s vocal delivery is strong, conveying the frustration in the lyrics well. (video)

8.       Jack White, “Over and Over and Over”: Released to coincide with the release of his new album, ‘Boarding House Reach,’ Jack White put out a video for his single “Over and Over and Over.” The video is just as weird as the song, taking place in a singular room in various states of color, clutter and occupation. Changes happen quicker as the song gets more and more frantic. There are even certain scenes where White is in a room with multiples of himself. (video)

From rock to indie and country, there have been a lot of great new songs and music videos released over the last week. If you missed any of it, start by checking out some of our favorites above and spend the weekend with some great new tunes.

Live Shows to Check Out in New York This Weekend (March 23-25, 2018)

The first weekend of spring is upon us. As all of us are trying to forget the late-season snow that now blankets the area and think warmer thoughts, this weekend will be a great time to finally get out and break free of this crazy weather. And what better way to do that than to head out to a live show.

New York’s music scene is always bustling with shows big and small, and this weekend is no different. There are a lot of rock shows happening around the area including a record release show from Jack White, a charity event headlined by O.A.R. and four nights of MGMT. Hardcore fans will have the opportunity to see rare shows from I Am the Avalanche and Nightmare of You, as well as tours from Circa Survive and Norma Jean. Even 90s R&B fans have something to look forward to as Brandy will be taking the stage for a few one-off shows this weekend.

Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, has once again scoured the internet for the hottest shows happening in the New York area this weekend. Here are eight that we think will be worth braving the snow and ice to see.

1.       Jack White: The former White Stripes frontman released his third solo album, ‘Boarding House Reach,’ today. Tonight’s show marks the second of three album release shows the singer is doing to promote the album. Don’t worry if you don’t have tickets though, as the entire show is being livestreamed on Twitter. (Friday, Warsaw)

2.       O.A.R.: The ‘Concert for Dreams’ takes place tonight, raising money for the Garden of Dreams Foundation to aid in helping children in the tri-state area combat “homelessness, extreme poverty and illness.” Headlined by O.A.R., the show will also feature performances from Run-DMC’s Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, Gavin DeGraw, Counting Crows’ Adam Duritz, fun.’s Nate Ruess, Goo Goo Dolls’ John Rzeznik, Matt Nathanson and Robert Randolph. (Friday, Beacon Theatre)

3.       Brandy: Known for her pop-y 1990s R&B singles, Brandy is back. Over the last few years, the singer has been back on television and Broadway. In 2016 she released a new single, “Beggin’ & Pleadin’,” and is supposedly working on her first new album in six years. Check out Brandy tonight as she breaks out all the hits during a pair of one-off shows: a solo gig tonight in New York and with Ashanti in Connecticut Saturday. (Friday, B.B. King Blues Club)

4.       MGMT: MGMT released their fourth album, ‘Little Dark Age,’ this past February to high praise from critics and fans alike. The band ends the first leg of their US tour in New York this weekend with three shows in Brooklyn. They will also be sticking around into the week, playing the opening show at the new Sony Hall in Times Square on Tuesday. (Saturday, Kings Theatre; Sunday & Monday, Brooklyn Steel)

5.       Circa Survive: Circa Survive kicks off their spring tour this weekend. The hardcore band released their latest album, ‘The Amulet,’ in September, their first release on Hopeless Records. Foxing and Hail the Sun will be opening the show. (Saturday, The Paramount Huntington)

6.       The English Beat: Get some 2-tone ska into your weekend with one of the originals of the genre, The English Beat. The Dave Wakeling-led US offshoot of the band will be releasing their first album, ‘Here We Go Love,’ this May and are playing a string of small club dates this spring leading up to release day to celebrate. (Sunday & Monday, City Winery)

7.       I Am the Avalanche & Nightmare of You: New York punk rockers I Am the Avalanche and New York indie-rockers Nightmare of You have teamed up for a few east coast shows in the last week, culminating this Sunday in a big hometown show. This is the first time I Am the Avalanche’s original line-up will be playing together in four years. Nightmare of You has also said that these are their only shows of the year. (Sunday, Gramercy Theatre)

8.       Norma Jean: Metalcore band Norma Jean has been getting nostalgic this month. The band is currently on a US tour playing their third album, ‘Redeemer,’ in its entirety.  Along for the ride are Gideon, Toothgrinder and Grey Haven, who will be opening the shows. (Sunday, Knitting Factory)

End your winter hibernation by heading out to see some live music in New York this weekend. Check out one of the shows above or any of the other amazing shows happening around the area and start your spring off the right way.

Spring Equinox: Songs that Feel Like Spring

Today marks the first day of spring in the U.S., a time usually marked not only by longer days ahead, but by the reemergence of plant life and the promise of non-freezing weather. After the late season snow the east coast has been pounded with over the last few weeks (with more to come in the forecast), just the thought of spring coming is enough to warrant a sense of excitement. What better way to expand on that feeling of light and renewal than by listening to some tunes to get you into the spring mindset.

What makes a good spring song isn’t necessarily the lyrics being about spring itself, but the feeling it gives you when you listen to it. A spring song should leave you feeling happy. It should be able to transport you somewhere where the sun is shining on you and the flowers are about to bloom.

Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, can’t wait for spring to arrive! That’s why we’ve compiled a list of some of our favorite songs with that spring day feel. Here are seven songs that will have you feeling the happiness and renewal of the season.

1.       U2, “Beautiful Day”: Released in 2000, “Beautiful Day” perfectly captures the mindset of stepping out your front door and seeing nothing but blue skies. The song begs you not to let good days “get away” in the most clarion, euphoric way possible. (video)

2.       The Polyphonic Spree, “Light and Day”: Usually songs about letting the sun in are more for the summer than the spring. However, “Light and Day” delivers that burst of excitement that can only come from going outside and “greeting” the new day, which definitely feels like the thing to do on the first day of spring. (video)

3.       Johnny Nash, “I Can See Clearly Now”: “I Can See Clearly Now” is one of those songs that you can’t help smiling when you hear it. Its lyrical content is pretty straight forward, talking about the clarity of thought the singer has once the “rain is gone” and there is nothing holding them back. Many are likely to share in this sentiment once all the snow has melted. (video)

4.       American Authors, “Best Day of My Life”: “Best Day of My Life” is a great, pop-y tune to whistle while you’re walking down the street in the spring air with your head in the clouds. The song is contagiously optimistic, the way a crisp spring day should make you feel. (video)

5.       OneRepublic, “Feel Again”: Thanks to its pounding beat and upbeat lyrics about feeling love again, “Feel Again” has an over-the-top, almost gospel-like euphoria to it. Much like the warmer spring weather will defrost the snow, his newfound love defrosted his cold heart, letting him “feel again.” Who wouldn’t want to shout that from the rooftops? (video)

6.       The Postal Service, “Such Great Heights”: The melody and lyricism of “Such Great Heights” are as easy-going and sweet as a mild spring day. It’s a quiet, introverted love song that makes you smile when you hear it. (video)

7.       Vampire Weekend, “Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa”: Melodically, “Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa” just screams sun and nice weather. With its preppy, minimalistic sound, this song is the sonic equivalent of spending a breezy day on a boat out on the bay. (video)

Spring often brings about feelings of renewal and happiness, contrasting the bleakness of winter the season is supposed to wash away. There are many songs that capture that same fresh, spring feeling. Check out some of our favorite spring songs above and let us know which songs remind you of the season.

Live Shows in New York This Weekend (March 16-18, 2018)

Another weekend is almost upon us. And with this Saturday being St. Patrick’s Day, there is sure to be a lot going on. However, if St. Patrick’s Day isn’t really your thing, you can always spend your weekend rocking out at a live show.

There are a lot of shows going on in New York this weekend, both St. Patrick’s Day and non-holiday-related. Demi Lovato will be bringing her arena tour with DJ Khaled to the area this weekend as are Judas Priest. Pop fans will also have the chance to see Charli XCX and Daughtry on much smaller stages. In rock music, the Beach Boys are back in town for a dose of nostalgia, while Story of the Year bring their new album to life on stage. For those who are looking to celebrate with the Irish, Murphy’s Law will be hosting their yearly St. Paddy’s Day show.

Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, loves live music. That’s why we’ve once again collected a list of some of the biggest shows happening in the New York area this weekend. Here are nine shows we think will be worth checking out.

1.       Story of the Year: Story of the Year released their first album in seven years, ‘Wolves,’ this past December. The album has some of the band’s most personal and melodic songs to date on it, a welcome change of pace for the hardcore band. In lieu of a traditional tour, the band has been playing one-off “album release” shows, the next of which takes place in New York tonight. (Friday, Gramercy Theatre)

2.       Demi Lovato & DJ Khaled: The worlds of pop and hip-hop collide when Demi Lovato and DJ Khaled’s massive North American tour hits New York tonight. Last year, Lovato and DJ Khaled both released high-charting new albums, ‘Tell Me You Love Me’ and ‘Grateful,’ respectively. (Friday, Barclays Center)

3.       Bully: Twice a month, Brooklyn’s House of Vans holds their ‘Get On Board’ women’s skate clinics. However, tonight’s ‘Get On Board’ session gets kicked up a notch with not just the clinic, but a skateboard building  workshop, mini-documentary and panel discussion, as well as a live music performance from female-fronted rock band Bully, open skate session and street market afterwards. Like all shows at House of Vans, tonight’s event is free with RSVP (there is a separate RSVP for the clinic and the concert). (Friday, House of Vans)

4.       Judas Priest: Metal legends Judas Priest came back swinging with a brand new album, ‘Firepower,’ earlier this month. Many publications, including Blabbermouth, calling it their “best album in a long time.” The band is currently on tour behind the album sans Glenn Tipton, who recently announced that he is battling Parkinson’s Disease.(Saturday, Nassau Coliseum)

5.       Murphy’s Law: It wouldn’t be St. Patrick’s Day without a show from Murphy’s Law. The Celtic punk band will be taking over Brooklyn Bazaar this Saturday with Drunken Rampage, Moral Panic and Runny for a night of drinking, moshing and intense punk energy that will leave you seeing green the next day. (Saturday, Brooklyn Bazaar)

6.       The Beach Boys: Following the 50th anniversary celebration of ‘Pet Sounds’ last year, The Beach Boys are back on tour. Mike Love and crew will be playing all the hits that have made them one of the most influential bands in rock history. (Saturday, NYCB Theater at Westbury)

7.       “Weird Al” Yankovic: Weird Al is known for his bizarre and hilarious pop and rock parodies, but what the casual fan might not know is that the musician/comedian has also written a lot of his own music. That will be the focus of his ‘Ridiculously Self-Indulgent, Ill-Advised Vanity Tour,’ which hits Long Island this weekend. Without costumes, props or videos, the show will still probably be silly and upbeat, since that is the nature of all of his music. If you can’t make this show, Weird Al will be returning to New York later this week for two shows at the Apollo Theater. (Saturday, The Paramount Huntington)

8.       Daughtry: Most artists tour behind their just released albums. But Daughtry are doing it the other way around on their ‘Before the Album’ tour. The tour will feature four brand new songs, as well as the band’s many hits. Frontman Chris Daughtry recently announced that recording has wrapped on their upcoming, as-yet-untitled fifth album and new music would be coming soon. (Saturday, St. George Theatre)

9.       Charli XCX: Before heading out on tour with Taylor Swift this May, pop singer Charli XCX is playing a series of small shows behind last year’s ‘Pop 2’ mixtape. The first night took place in Los Angeles this past Thursday with round 2 taking place in Brooklyn this weekend. Reading reviews of Thursday’s show, expect a wild night of music with a lot of special guests. (Sunday, Elsewhere) (Sold Out)

Between St. Patrick’s Day and all the amazing live shows happening in New York, this weekend is sure to be filled with non-stop excitement. If you’re still looking for something to do, check out some of our concert picks above and spend your weekend rocking out.

Pi Day: Seven Songs About Pi(e)

Happy Pi Day! The one day in the year that corresponds with the first three digits of pi (𝝅), many high school math and science classes tend to celebrate with pizza parties and the like. But you don’t have to be in school to celebrate Pi Day. You can have your own celebration by listening to songs written about pi(e)!

Okay, so there aren’t really any serious songs about pi. Heck, there aren’t that many serious songs about the food either. However, there are many artists who use “pie” in their songs to refer to something else. Some artists, like Warrant, Led Zeppelin and Motley Crue, have used it to describe sex. Don McLean used it as a reference to Americana. Still others, like The Beatles and James Taylor, use it as a term of endearment to express their feelings for someone.

Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, is celebrating Pi Day by taking a look at songs that use pie in its various meanings. Here are seven sexy and sincere songs that make reference to the sweet treat.

1.       Warrant, “Cherry Pie”: Hair metal band Warrant had a handful of hits in the late 1980s and early 1990s, but their most recognized song by far is “Cherry Pie.” The song’s lyrics mainly focus on singer Jani Lane having sex with his girlfriend, but whether he is calling his girl as hot and sweet as the dessert or using the treat to talk about her private parts remains unknown. (video)

2.       Don McLean, “American Pie”: “American Pie” is obviously not about pie, but more of a take on the saying “American as apple pie.” The song was written about the “day the music died,” the fateful day Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and the “Big Bopper” were involved in a tragic plane crash. These artists were supposed to be the future of American rock ‘n’ roll, but were cut down before they could be big. (video)

3.       Led Zeppelin, “Custard Pie”: The opening track to Led Zeppelin’s ‘Physical Grafiti,’ “Custard Pie” is another song filled with sexual innuendo. Here, the pie is definitely a stand-in for the woman’s private parts, calling it “sweet and nice” and telling her to “same me a slice.”Even so, the song has been deemed by many critics as one of the band’s best songs. (video)

4.       The Beatles, “Honey Pie” and “Wild Honey Pie”: The Beatles included two songs referencing “pie” on their double album ‘The Beatles (The White Album).’ “Honey Pie” tells the story of a man who wants his actress girlfriend (referred to as “Honey Pie”), who moves to the United States and makes it big, to come home to England. “Wild Honey Pie” reprises the theme of the first song. (“Honey Pie” video) (“Wild Honey Pie” video)

5.       Mötley Crüe, “Slice of Your Pie”: The third track from Mötley Crüe’s ‘Dr. Feelgood,’ “Slice of Your Pie” makes yet another thinly veiled reference to sex. Here, singer Vince Neil begs a young girl (“so young ever get caught they’ll arrest me”) to “order me up another slice of your pie,” calling her “sweet” and “pretty” and telling her he has something “sticky sweet” for her. Eww! (video)

6.       James Taylor, “Sweet Potato Pie”: A beautiful tribute to the woman he loves, James Taylor’s “Sweet Potato Pie” tells of a man who is so happy that he finally has the girl he has loved since childhood. The song goes into extreme depth to tell the listener why he loves his girl, practically proclaiming his love from the rooftops. (video)

7.       The Four Tops, “I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)”: A classic Motown love song, The Four Tops went to number one in 1965 with their upbeat love song “I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch).” The song bursts with love and joy, exclaiming “Sugar pie honey bunch / you know that I love you / I can’t help myself / I love you and nobody else.” (video)

Whether meant to reference sex or used as a cute term of endearment, there are a lot of songs about pie. Kick off your Pi Day celebration by checking out the tracks above, then let us know what pi songs you love.

Week in Review: New Songs / Music Videos to Check Out (March 4-10, 2018)

It can be hard to keep track of all the new songs and music videos that come out over a given week. We get it, things get busy and there is a lot to take in. That’s why the weekend makes for a great time to check out all the new music you may have missed during the hustle and bustle of daily life.

This week saw the release of a lot of new rock and alternative tracks. Lily Allen and Shinedown both announced new albums with corresponding lead singles that shake things up and show each in a brand new light. The Neighbourhood and A Perfect Circle both released videos for their previously released singles. We also got great new tracks from established artists like The Decemberists and Owl City, as well as newcomers like Betty Who, Bishop Briggs, Blossoms, Sunflower Bean and Movements.

Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, has been searching the internet for this week’s best new songs and music videos. Here are nine that we think are worth checking out.

1.       Lily Allen, “Three”: This week, Lily Allen announced plans to release her fourth studio album, ‘No Shame.’ Along with the announcement came two new songs: the low-key, hip-hop-assisted “Higher” and the piano ballad “Three.” And while both have great tunes, “Three” is a bit more intriguing to me. In it, she puts herself in the place of a three-year-old child, telling someone (perhaps a parent) not to leave. It’s solemn and introspective, a new kind of track we haven’t necessarily heard from Allen before. (video)

2.       The Decemberists, “Once In My Life”: “Once In My Life” goes from folk to rock to gospel in the span of five minutes. The transitions are seamless. Its original folk tune escalates when the drums come in to frame it. The tone shifts again about three minutes in, where a big drum roll prompts the song to build into this joyous, soaring gospel-tinged chorus. (video)

3.       Owl City, “New York City”: In true Owl City form, “New York City” has this fluttery pop sound complete with sound effects and head-in-the-clouds melody. The lyrics are just as light hearted and uplifting as the melody. It’s not only a love song to a girl, but to anyone looking to see the world. (video)

4.       The Neighbourhood, “Scary Love”: Upon the release of their new album, self-titled album, The Neighbourhood released a video for their single “Scary Love.” The video features Tommy Wiseau (‘The Room’) as a demon hunter who walks into a diner where he ends up engaged in a laser gun battle with the waitress behind the counter. “Scary Love’s” 80s synth-rock sound goes well with the overall 80s-style and feel of the video. (video)

5.       Blossoms, “I Can’t Stand It”: “I Can’t Stand It” has a clean garage-rock sound with tinges of synth and keyboard rock to give it movement. Its repetitive hook is just catchy enough to get stuck in your head. (video)

6.       A Perfect Circle, “Disillusioned”: A Perfect Circle released the music video for “Disillusioned,” the second single from their upcoming album, ‘Eat The Elephant.’ Taking place at an institution where everyone is connected to their phones and worshiping electronics that’s as dark and haunting as Maynard James Keenan’s vocals, one individual escapes to find a more colorful world outside of her screen. She then proceeds to break others out of their trance as the song bursts out of its piano-driven melancholy. The premise fits lyrically with the song, soundtracking the video with lyrics about “putting down the silicon obsession” and “taking a look around.” (video)

7.       Sunflower Bean, “Twentytwo”: “Twentytwo” is a delightful mix of retro and lo-fi indie rock. It has this muted garage rock sound that makes it feel a little like it was recorded in the 60s, though it clearly sounds like it was written out of today’s indie-rock climate. It’s good if you want to relax and space out for a while. (video)

8.       Movements, “Deadly Dull”: The subject of “Deadly Dull” is pretty clear: This is a song about watching a loved one with Alzheimer’s deteriorating mentally. The lyrics contemplate how the loved one must feel, as well as whether this will happen to him too. It gets a little loud for a song of this subject, but anyone who has ever dealt with the disease can relate to this song. (video)

9.       Shinedown, “Devil”: “Devil” is one of the heaviest rock songs Shinedown has released in years. The first single from their upcoming concept album ‘Attention Attention,’ frontman Brent Smith told Billboard that the song is about fear of self and fear of the world around you. Though the song is a departure from the band’s standard, lighter rock, one thing that has remained the same in their songwriting is their ability to come up with clever, catchy choruses, as “Devil’s” sing-song-y nature is very memorable. (video)

A lot of great new songs and music videos were released over the last week. Catch up this weekend by checking out some of our favorites above. Then, let us know which new songs you’ve been into this week.

Shows in New York this Weekend (March 9-11, 2018)

The weekend is almost here, which means it’s almost time to kick-back, relax and enjoy some free time. What better way to do that than going out to see some live music?

From the big venues to the small clubs, New York is always bustling with live music on a nightly basis and this weekend is no different. From established musicians like Elvis Costello, Michael Schenker and Kool Keith to newer artists like Chevonne and the Fuzz and Skinny Lister, there is a lot to look forward to.

Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, loves live music. That’s why we’ve once again searched the internet for the best shows New York has to offer this weekend. Here are seven shows you will not want to miss.

1.       Elvis Costello & the Imposters: After two successful shows at Brooklyn Steel and the Capitol Theatre on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively, Elvis Costello & the Imposters come back to Westchester for two more shows this weekend. Among getting to see him play from his prolific back catalog, the singer also released a new single, “You Shouldn’t Look At Me That Way,” earlier this month. (Friday & Sunday, The Capitol Theatre)

2.       Buckcherry: Hard rockers Buckcherry have gone through a bit of a reshuffling lately with original guitarist Keith Nelson and drummer Xavier Muriel leaving the band. However, the band seem to be as strong as ever. The band will be playing a few shows in the area this weekend, as well as a Rocks Off boat cruise in April. (Friday, The Paramount Huntington; Saturday, Wellmont Theater)

3.       Skinny Lister: In 2016, British folk-punks Skinny Lister released a new album, ‘The Devil, The Heart & The Fight,’ with a deluxe edition released late last year. Now, the band is bringing the album back to the US. Be prepared for an energetic show. (Friday, Knitting Factory)

4.       Michael Schenker: Famed UFO and Scorpions guitarist and solo artist Michael Schenker is back at it with his new band, Michael Schenker Fest. The band released their debut album, ‘Resurrection,’ earlier this month and is hitting the road behind it. (Saturday, Irving Plaza)

5.       Kool Keith: One of the most prolific rappers in hip-hop, Kool Keith has released more than 30 collaborative and solo studio albums. His latest solo effort, ‘Feature Magnetic,’ was released in 2016. Most recently, it was announced that he would be reuniting his group Dr. Octagon for new music this year. Catch him solo for a one-off show in New York this weekend. (Saturday, Highline Ballroom)

6.       Chevonne and The Fuzz: New Jersey’s Chevonne and the Fuzz will be making their way to Manhattan this weekend for a late night set. Led by ‘The Voice’ season three finalist Chevonne, you’ll be blown away by her larger than life stage presence and amazing voice. (Saturday, Rockwood Music Hall Stage 1)

7.       Senses Fail: Last month, New Jersey hard rockers Senses Fail released their seventh studio album, ‘If There Is Light, It Will Find You,’ the band’s most personal album yet. Upon release, the album became their best selling in more than a decade, topping the Independent, Alternative and Hard Music charts, number two on the Rock chart and number 57 on the Top 200, just to name a few. The band is currently on a headlining tour with Reggie and the Full Effect, Have Mercy and Household as support, hitting New York this weekend. (Sunday, Music Hall of Williamsburg)

Getting out to a live show is a great way to spend your hard earned free time and make lasting memories. Check out one of the shows above or any of the other amazing shows the area has to offer this weekend.

Albums Celebrating 30, 40 & 50-Year Anniversaries in 2018

There are a lot of albums that are celebrating milestone anniversaries in 2018. This year marks the 30th and 40th anniversaries of debut albums from the likes of Soundgarden, NWA, Van Halen and The Cars. Iconic albums from The Beatles, Blondie, Jimi Hendrix and more are also being fondly remembered and celebrated 40 and 50 years later.

Last week, Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, took a look at albums celebrating 10th and 20th anniversaries in 2018. Today, we return to the nostalgia rabbit hole to look at albums turning 30, 40 and 50 this year.

30 Years
1.       Metallica, ‘…And Justice for All’: Metallica’s fourth studio album and first without bassist Cliff Burton, ‘…And Justice for All’ saw the band release some of their most complex songs ever. The album was also one of their most popular, peaking at number six on the Billboard 200.

2.       Soundgarden, ‘Ultramega OK’: Though not originally a hit, Soundgarden’s debut album, ‘Ultramega OK,’ laid the groundwork for grunge and the sound that was about to come out of the Seattle scene. Ahead of this year’s anniversary, the album was reissued, this time taking its rightful place within the top 10 on Billboard’s Vinyl Albums and Tastemaker Albums charts.

3.       NWA, ‘Straight Outta Compton’: One of the defining albums of the late 80s hip-hop scene, ‘Straight Outta Compton’ helped give rise to west coast “gangsta” rap. It’s influence remains apparent three decades later, being included into the National Recording Registry last year, as well as inspiring the title of an award-winning biopic about NWA in 2015.

4.       R.E.M., ‘Green’: R.E.M. made their major label debut in 1988, releasing their sixth album, ‘Green,’ on Warner Bros. Records. Opting for more major-key tracks and the inclusion of mandolin, lap steel guitar, accordion and cello, the album saw the band expanding their sound and creating one of their most well-received albums of all time.

40 Years

1.       Blondie, ‘Parallel Lines’: The second of two albums released in 1978, ‘Parallel Lines’ became Blondie’s most iconic album. A step away from the band’s punk and new wave roots, singles like “Heart of Glass” and “One Way or Another” took on more of a pop and disco sound, giving them crossover pop fame.

2.       The Who, ‘Who Are You’: The Who were already big stars when they released ‘Who Are You,’ their eighth studio album and last to feature Keith Moon on drums. The title track became a hit for the band, leading the album to reach number two on the Billboard Pop Albums chart.

3.       Van Halen, ‘Van Halen’: Van Halen’s self-titled debut album was a huge hit upon its release in 1978. Featuring several singles that would become rock radio staples, including “Runnin’ with the Devil” and “Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love,” the album reached number 19 on Billboard’s pop albums chart and continues to be a best-seller decades later.

4.       The Cars, ‘The Cars’: The Cars released their self-titled album in 1978 to critical and commercial success. “Just What I Needed” became a rock radio staple, while the album itself peaked on the Billboard Charts at number 18.

50 Years

(Note: Yes, Led Zeppelin is turning 50 this year. However, their debut album came out in 1969, and therefore will not be 50 until January 2019.)

1.       Velvet Underground, ‘White Light/White Heat’: The follow-up to their groundbreaking debut album, ‘White Light/White Heat’ found the Velvet Underground headed in a new direction with their sound. Without influence from Andy Warhol or Nico, the band got more aggressive with their sound and content, writing about unsavory subjects like sex and drugs. The album can be seen as a step towards punk before punk was even a conscious thing.

2.       Big Brother & the Holding Company, ‘Cheap Thrills’: ‘Cheap Thrills’ saw Big Brother & the Holding Company earn their biggest success yet. Their second (and last) album with Janis Joplin as frontwoman, the album reached number one on the Billboard Top LPs chart with single “Piece of My Heart” becoming a classic rock track. It would be the last time the band would see that kind of success.

3.       Jimi Hendrix Experience, ‘Electric Ladyland’: Noted by many as one of the greatest albums of all time, ‘Electric Ladyland’ became the Jimi Hendrix Experience’s best-selling album ever. The album topped the Billboard album chart for two weeks with their cover of “All Along the Watchtower” becoming their highest-charting single and arguably more iconic than the original.

4.       The Beatles, ‘The Beatles (The White Album)’: Released near the end of The Beatles’ career together, their self-titled album features some of the band’s most iconic and eclectic songs. Songs like “Back in the U.S.S.R.” and “Revolution” were more upbeat while “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” “Blackbird” and “Don’t Pass Me By” are some of the most beautiful melodies the band has ever recorded.

5.       Rolling Stones, ‘Beggars Banquet’: The Rolling Stones’ ninth album, ‘Beggars Banquet’ found the band hitting out with a harder edge than their previous album. Leading off with “Sympathy for the Devil,” the album reached number five on the Billboard 200 upon release.

In 2018, there are a lot of iconic albums that are celebrating milestone anniversaries. Go back in time by checking out some of those turning 30, 40 and 50 this year, and let us know what albums you’re nostalgic for.

Week in Review: New Songs / Music Videos You Need to Check Out (February 26 – March 3, 2018)

Welcome to the weekend! With another week in the books, it’s time to take a look back at the new songs and music videos released over the last seven days.

As always, there was a lot of new music vying for our attention this week. In pop, Meghan Trainor made her return to music with a new single while P!nk released yet another single from her fantastic new album. Country duo Dan + Shay released a stirring new single. Then in rock, Jack White released another new single from his upcoming album, as did The Kills, Yo La Tengo, Chvrches, Hawthorne Heights and Moby.

Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, loves new music. That’s why we’ve once again been searching the internet all week for the best new songs and music videos. Here are 10 of our favorite pop, rock and country tracks we think you need to hear.

1.       Dan + Shay, “Tequila”: Dan + Shay’s latest single “Tequila” is a sweet, countrified love ballad that will have you pinning for the “one that got away.” You can hear the thought and light in Shay Mooney’s voice puts even more feeling into the melody. (video)

2.       Weird Al Yankovic, “The Hamilton Polka”: Weird Al’s polka take on the ‘Hamilton’ soundtrack is zany and hilarious. He gives the originally rapped lyrics a slight melodic bend, and then brings out the horns and sound effects to really put it over the top. (video)

3.       Moby, “This Wild Darkness”: Moby enlists a gospel choir for his latest single, “This Wild Darkness,” a song about trying to find light in the darkness of the world we live in. The song’s candid lyrics and honest delivery pull no punches when it comes to intent. Its grave tone is only exaggerated by the solemn-ness of the choir’s singing. This theme runs through the video as well, with Moby speaking directly into the camera during his verses among images of the world in despair. (video)

4.       The Vaccines, “Put It on a T-Shirt”: “Put It on a T-Shirt” is a polished rock track that combines elements of today’s indie-rock with bands like The Doors and The Smiths for a sound that is at the same time both classic and modern. The song is catchy enough to grab your attention while the variety in the melody will keep you invested. (video)

5.       Hawthorne Heights, “Pink Hearts”: The first single from their upcoming album ‘Bad Frequencies,’ “Pink Hearts” is an upbeat, melodic pop-punk song that takes the band in a completely new direction. It has a much softer, more pleasant sound than the harsher, half-screamed melodies of their early singles. (video)

6.       The Kills, “List of Demands (Reparations)”: Led by a steady, unrelenting drum beat, The Kills’ latest single “List of Demands” makes it clear that this song means business. The guitars follow the drums top give it a striking rock melody, highlighting the intensity of the lyrics. (video)

7.       Jack White, “Over and Over and Over”: “Over and Over and Over” is a very unique track. It has the normal, bluesy guitars that Jack White is known for, but also has elements of rap-rock (a-la Rage Against the Machine), metal and electronica. These new elements keep the track interesting, hooking you in with every twist. (video)

8.       Chvrches feat. Matt Berninger, “My Enemy”: The contrast between Chvrches frontwoman Lauren Mayberry and The National’s Matt Berninger’s voices on “My Enemy” is drastic, but the two ultimately work well together. The rock-leaning verses and the electronic chorus are brought together by an underlying beat loop and synth melody that maintains balance throughout the song. (video)

9.       Miriam Bryant, “Black Car”: “Black Car” really shows off the strength in Miriam Bryant’s voice. A jazzy, indie-leaning pop song, there is a level of confidence and power she exudes in it. The timing of the song is impeccable, with every beat structured and counted. (video)

10.   Tigers Jaw, “Window”: “Window” is a low-key track with a light pop-punkiness that gives it some personality. The melody and hook are just catchy enough to stick in your head and by the end you’re unconsciously singing along. (video)

This week saw the release of a lot of great new songs and music videos. Check out some of our favorites above and let us know what new songs you’ve been enjoying this week.
