Another week is behind us and with it came a slew of great
new songs and music videos. Now with the weekend upon us, it’s time to take a
look back at some of those songs and videos that came out over the last seven
days.
As always, this week saw new music from today’s top artists,
established bands and newcomers alike. We got new music from fan favorites like
The Chainsmokers, who surprised everyone with another single from their debut
full-length, and Hunter Hayes. Shoegaze vets Slowdive continued with their
reunion, releasing another song from their long-awaited new album. Established
rock acts Blink-182 and Papa Roach each put out new songs as well. Bleachers also
returned with a new single, following up the success of their 2014 debut. Then,
we got a new tune from soulful blues rocker Gary Clark Jr. that shows off his
impressive guitar skills. As for new artists, Bleeker put out a terrific new
music video.
Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s top music outlet, has been keeping
a lookout all week for the best new songs and music videos. Here are eight of
our favorites that we think you should check out right now.
1.
Slowdive, “Sugar for the Pill”: Prepping to
release their first album in nearly 22 years, ‘Slowdive,’ Slowdive put out a
new single, “Sugar for the Pill.” The song has an atmospheric feel, steered by
a steady snare beat and both fuzzed out and chiming guitars. (video)
2.
Bleeker, “Where’s Your Money/Alt Mix”: Right out
of the gate, this song brings a torrential storm of power. The chunky beats and
fuzzed out effect on the vocals kind of sound a little like a more
indie-influenced Fitz and the Tantrums. The lead singer also has a great voice
with a fantastic range (just listen to that downward spiral of lyrics during
the bridge). (video)
3.
Hunter Hayes, “Yesterday’s Song”: Despite its
upbeat, celebratory feel, this is one detailed break-up song. I mean, he’s
pretty much telling the girl that she was the “song stuck in his head” and now
he doesn’t want to hear that song anymore. (video)
4.
Gary Clark Jr., “Our Love”: This is a slow,
soulful jam harking back to the early days of blues rock and guitar. His guitar
playing here is masterful, evidenced by the guitar solo in the middle of the
song. (video)
5.
Papa Roach, “Born for Greatness”: This song
seems like a big departure for Papa Roach. While the aggression and hard rock
guitars, this was more like an attempt at rap-rock than anything else. The song
works though. The verses sound like a Kanye West rap while the bridge and
chorus bring it back to rock with a little electronic thrown in. (video)
6.
Bleachers,
“Don’t Take The Money”: This is Bleachers’ first single in nearly three years.
And while I don’t think it hits on the same magic as “I Wanna Get Better” did,
it’s still pretty good. The song is driven by a steady kick drum beat, starting
slow and building to that first synth-drenched chorus. Then the rest of the
song continues there, becoming this indie-synth-pop dance jam. (video)
7.
Blink-182,
“Misery”: Blink has released yet another song from the upcoming deluxe edition
of ‘California.’ “Misery” brings the band back to their usual sound, although
not as melodically. The beginning reminds me of some of the band’s early,
depressing songs (like “Adam’s Song” or “Stay Together for the Kids”), but
picks itself back up almost right away into harder pop-punk territory. (video)
8.
The
Chainsmokers, “The One”: “The One” is a little lower key but still plays
with the same formula that has brought them so many hits in the last year. The
song is as close to a ballad as you will probably get from the duo, using a
subtle piano melody instead of a drum loop to drive the song. It is only at the
end that the song brings in the electronic aspect, just in time for the song to
crescendo and end. (video)
These are some of our favorite songs and music videos that were
released in the last week. Check these out and let us know what some of your
favorite songs of the last week were. Happy listening!
