Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s best new independent record
shop, has been diligently scouring the internet for some of the best new music
and videos from the past week that we think are worthy of your time. This week’s
gems range from hard rocking tunes from the likes of Bon Jovi, Red Hot Chili
Peppers, Ryan Adams, At The Drive-In, The Orwells and Issues to popier fare
from Tegan & Sara and One Republic, as well as thought-invoking rap from
Atmosphere and emotion-evoking indie-rock from Electric Guest. So sit back,
relax, and check out these songs, sure to make your weekend even better.
Videos:
1.
Tegan & Sara, “Dying To Know”: The latest in
the sister duo’s attempt to release a video for every song on their new album, ‘Love
You to Death,’ “Dying To Know” features the sisters as felt puppets driving
around and contemplating why their lovers left them. The song is synth-pop at
its best; it’s upbeat and catchy, a testament to why Tegan & Sara have
become so popular over the last few years. (video)
2.
Bon Jovi, “Devil’s In The Temple”: I never
thought I’d say this, but Bon Jovi’s latest single, “Devil’s In The Temple,” is
actually good. It’s not the alt-country, sappy tunes they’ve been putting out
as of late, but takes you back to their glory days sonically. The video is well
done too, showing a young, female-fronted band making a video and its directors
trying to make the frontwoman into the sex-kitten she doesn’t want to be, all
while Bon Jovi is looking on disappointedly. It pokes fun at the male gaze (the
‘devil in the temple, perhaps?), giving the girl the last laugh. (video)
3.
OneRepublic, “Let’s Hurt Tonight”: Ryan Tedder
has this impressive ability to write songs that you can tell will instantly
become hits and “Let’s Hurt Tonight” is no different. It is a beautiful song
with a sound that is very Mumford and Sons without the folk instrumentation.
The video itself is kind of unremarkable, as it really just intersperses scenes
from the movie ‘Collateral Beauty’ with scenes of the band performing. But don’t
be surprised if you start hearing the song on every adult contemporary radio
station in the country soon. (video)
4.
Electric Guest, “Dear To Me”: This song is proof
that you don’t need guitars to make a terrific song. “Dear To Me” is
sentimental and catchy, truly beautiful. For the video, the band got some of
their famous friends (Andy Samberg, Haim), as well as family, to have a little
party. (video)
5.
Red Hot Chili Peppers, “Sick Love”: The latest
single from ‘The Getaway,’ “Sick Love” takes a disturbing look at fame. The
animated video finds a young girl heading off to Hollywood with stars in her
eyes looking for fame, only for her succumb to the temptations of sex and drugs.
It’s very “not safe for work,” as it contains animated scenes of gore. You’ve
been warned. (video)
6.
Atmosphere, “A Long Hello”: Atmosphere is always
creative with his rhymes and videos. The entire video for “A Long Hello” is
just rapper Atmosphere walking on the beach towards the ocean with a cardboard
cutout under his arm and a dazed blank stare. But the video’s simplicity says
so much, particularly with a backing track about hating goodbyes. (video)
7.
Issues, “Slow Me Down”: While I don’t care much
for the screaming introduction, Issues’ new song, “Slow Me Down,” eases up a
bit towards its logical beginning and is pretty good. However, maybe that intro
is apropos considering that the song is about slowing down and looking at your
decisions. The video is pretty similar, following a wife who learns that her
husband is cheating on her and decides to follow the mistress around town with
a gun before her son talks her out of shooting her. Both the song and video
really come together towards the end, so it’s worth a listen and watch. (video)

8.
At The Drive-In, “Governed by Contagions”: “Governed
by Contagions” is the first song At The Drive-In has released in 16 years and they
haven’t lost a beat. This song is hardcore at its best. It’s raw and takes a critical
look at society in a way not many current bands can. You can currently pick
this song up for free on the band’s website. Hopefully more new music will be
coming from them soon. (video)
9.
Ryan Adams, “Do You Still Love Me”: His first
bit of original music in two years, “Do You Still Love Me” features some great
guitar work and a fairly simple chorus repeating the title of the song. It gets
kind of spaced-out at the end, bringing in fuzzed out guitars and synths to
give it a pretty rocking finale. Look out for his new album, ‘Prisoner,’ in
2017. (video)
10.
The Orwells, “Double Feature”: At seven minutes
long, “Double Feature” is longer than your typical rock song. But the length of
this song doesn’t put a damper on the wind-y garage rock The Orwells display in
it. In fact, it lets the band noodle around, giving the song personality. (video)
Whether you are into rock, pop or rap, there was a lot of good
music released in the last week. Hopefully these songs help you get your
weekend started off right and put you into the right mindset for the week
ahead.
