Week In Review: New Songs / Music Videos You Need to Check Out (November 10-16, 2019)

A lot of new music is released over the course of any given week and this one was no exception. We saw many top artists, as well as smaller bands, drop new songs and music videos over the last seven days, including Billie Eilish, Taylor Swift, Celine Dion, Mike Posner, Super Whatevr and more.

Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, loves new music. That’s why we’ve once again scoured the internet for the week’s best new songs and music videos. Here are eight (and a few more) that we think are worth a second listen this weekend.

1.       Naughty Boy & Mike Posner, “Live Before I Die”: It’s not so much the song that’s so captivating (though it is an easy, uplifting listen), but the video for it. Earlier this year, Mike Posner walked across the entire United States. The video shows his journey from the Atlantic, through the mid-west where he was bitten by a rattlesnake, all the way to the Pacific. It’s very uplifting if you want to know his story. (video)

2.       Celine Dion, “Courage”: Celine Dion’s latest single “Courage,” from the recently released album of the same name, is filled with power and pain. You can feel her vulnerability as she speaks to her late husband through the song and pleads with her higher power to help her find the courage to cope. The song’s confessional tone is amplified by the minor key piano and strings surrounding her voice.  (video)

3.       Weezer, “Lost In The Woods”: Weezer’s contribution to the ‘Frozen 2’ soundtrack, “Lost In The Woods” has that old school, “emo” rock feel that seems to be missing from a lot of the band’s recent work. (video)

4.       Cory Wells, “Cement”: “Cement” is a slow, emotional ballad about making a relationship work through the hard times. Wells’ vocals and lyrics are blunt and vulnerable against the song’s acoustic melody. It’s a sound very reminiscent of Dashboard Confessional’s early 2000s “emo,” but he makes it his own and does it in such a beautiful, melodic way. (video)

5.       Super Whatevr, “Yours Truly”: “Yours Truly” is a genuinely joyful pop-punk song. The beat keeps your toe tapping and the speak-sung vocal delivery is as upbeat as the words themselves. It’s the kind of song that makes you want to get up and dance like the people in the video. (video)

6.       Little Big, “Go Bananas”: “Go Bananas” is so weird that its meme-worthy. The electronic track is all over the place but stands out sonically, giving off heavy “Barbie Girl” and “Pineapple Pen” vibes. (video)

7.       The Reaganomics, “Grown Ass Man”: Some of the best punk comes from bands just letting it all go on the most mundane of things (Black Flag’s “TV Party” comes to mind). “Grown Ass Man” is that kind of song. The band sings about the pains of being an adult and aging in an engaging, fast & loud manor that’s equal parts serious and playful. (video)

8.       Taylor Swift, “Beautiful Ghosts”: “Beautiful Ghosts,” the collaboration between Taylor Swift and Andrew Lloyd Webber from the upcoming ‘Cats’ movie, is emotional without being too over the top. Its lyrics are vivid in a way where you can see the scene in your mind as the song is being sung. (video)

Seven Rock Artists & Bands Who Have Guest Starred on ‘Sesame Street’

The groundbreaking 50^th season of ‘Sesame Street’ is set to premiere this Saturday (11/16) on HBO. On Tuesday, the world got a sneak peak at the first episode when the show posted a clip featuring Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl singing a song called “Here We Go” with Big Bird and Elmo as they traveled around the United States. Other guest stars set to drop by this season include Maren Morris, Charlie Puth, Thomas Rhett and more.

Over its five decades on the air, the iconic children’s program has featured a multitude of guest stars interacting with the Muppets, including a slew of prominent musicians. From legends such as B.B. King, RayCharles, David Bowie and Michael Jackson to today’s hit makers such as Katy Perry, Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran, many a musician has had their moment with these beloved characters. This also includes a handful of rockers and rock bands.

In honor of ‘Sesame Street’s’ 50^th anniversary, Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, is taking a look back at some of the rock artists who have gotten to perform on the show over the years. Whether they performed something new, rewrote their own songs or performed their own music unedited, here are just seven of the rockers who have had the opportunity to play with the ‘Sesame Street’ Muppets.

1.       Spin Doctors: In 1993, Spin Doctors were at the height of their career, having two massive hits with “Two Princes” and “Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong.” For their appearance on the show, the band rewrote portions of the former song to soundtrack a segment where Telly and Elmo were fighting over who Zoe should play with.

2.       R.E.M.: Following the success of their 1991 album ‘Out Of Time,’ R.E.M. made an appearance on ‘Sesame Street’ with a rearranged version of their second single, “Shiny, Happy People.” The song was re-titled “Happy, Furry Monsters” and was featured in a segment where the band played while all the monster characters acted out different feelings.

3.       Dave Matthews: In 2013, Dave Matthews appeared on the show sans band to work through some feelings with Grover. The singer strums through a new song called “I Need A Word” on banjo while the two sing about their “not very good” feelings in an effort to find what’s bugging them.

4.       OK Go: Technically, OK Go’s appearance on the show wasn’t interacting with the Muppets. However, the band did write an original song for the show called “Three Primary Colors,” and starred in the accompanying “insert” video, which they filmed in the stop-motion style that helped them go viral five years prior.

5.       Paul Simon: Back in 1977, Paul Simon played his hit song “Me And Julio Down By The School Yard” sitting on the iconic ‘Sesame Street’ stoop for the show’s human children (an interesting choice given the song’s subject). Simon returned more than a decade later to appear with Ladysmith Black Mambazo for “The African Alphabet.”

6.       Train: Following the release of 2012’s ‘California 37’ and a renewed interest in the band, Train made an appearance on the iconic show. The band reworked their then current single “Drive By” into a counting song called “Five By,” which found the trio, The Count and Elmo wondering how many peaches and chairs they would need.

7.       Goo Goo Dolls: Still riding high from the success of 1998’s ‘Dizzy Up The Girl,’ the Goo Goo Dolls were invited to appear on ‘Sesame Street’ in 2000. The band performed a reworked version of their hit “Slide” entitled “Pride,” which they sung to Elmo to celebrate his successes.

Over ‘Sesame Street’s’ 50 year history, the show has played host to hundreds of guest stars, many of which came from the world of rock and other genres of music. Week In Review: New Songs / Music Videos You Need to Check Out (November 3-9, 2019)

Another chilly week has come and gone, and with it came a lot of new music fighting for our attention. This was especially true when it came to rock and pop music this week, as we got some great new songs and music videos from the likes of Ozzy Osbourne, Angels & Airwaves, Best Coast and more.

Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, loves new music. That’s why we’ve once again scoured the internet for some of the hottest new tracks released over the last seven days. Here are eight (and a few more) that we think are worth taking another listen to this weekend.

1.       Ozzy Osbourne, “Under The Graveyard”: Osbourne’s first official single in nearly a decade, “Under The Graveyard” is classic Ozzy. From the fuzzed-out metal guitars to the dark, haunting melody and husky vocals, the song has Osbourne’s signature all over it. The lyrics are a bit downcast, but the melody goes with those dark lyrics nicely. It’s a great way to welcome the Prince of Darkness back to music after the rough couple of years he’s had. (video)

2.       Angels & Airwaves, “Kiss & Tell”: Taking a break from his alien-hunting hustle, Tom DeLonge has revived Angels & Airwaves for a new album and single. “Kiss & Tell” focuses a little more on the pop-punk side of the band’s sound, though the big, atmospheric electronics are still very much present.  (video)

3.       Patrick Stump, “Deep Blue Love”: Fall Out Boy vocalist Patrick Stump has released a soulful new solo track for the upcoming film ‘Spell.’ “Deep Blue Love” is fairly formulaic when it comes to slow jams, but Stump seems to play into that here. The song is accompanied by a cute, quirky, self-aware video that lets you in a bit on just how cheesy it and the song are. That being said, Stump’s vocals are smooth and his falsetto on-point, which make it a very pleasant listen. (video)

4.       Panic! At The Disco, “Into The Unknown”: “Into The Unknown” is a true theatrical piece, like it was meant to be sung powerfully on Broadway. The song, which is being released as the first single from the upcoming ‘Frozen 2’ film, is a full story following the thought process of Elsa’s character probably before the main adventure of the film kicks off. I don’t think it will have the same kind of popularity as “Let It Go” from the original film, just because it is too theatrical for radio, but it is big and catchy (especially the chorus), which will allow for some grip. 5.       Hot Chelle Rae, “I Hate LA”: After four years, Hot Chelle Rae are back with a brand new single. “I Hate LA” is less of the dance-y pop-punk of their big single “Tonight, Tonight,” and more of a refined pop tune. The easy beat and minimalist vocal melody give the song a breezy, California feel. The lyrics unfold to reveal a simple, easy to follow story that shows how they’ve grown as storytellers and songwriters. (video)

6.       Higher Power, “Low Season”: “Low Season” falls somewhere in between heavy pop-punk, grunge and 90s alternative. The combination is kind of intriguing. If you ever wanted to listen to Hinder and Story of the Year at the same time, than this could be for you. (video)

7.       Best Coast, “For The First Time”: “For The First Time” is a post-break-up song that celebrates being able to be yourself again. From the very beginning, the bright, country-tinged melody takes hold of you and immediately transports you into this open, happy, upbeat world. It makes you feel good just listening to it. (video)

8.       The World/Inferno Friendship Society, “Freedom is a Wilderness Made for You and Me”: There is a haunting quality to “Freedom is a Wilderness Made for You and Me,” a product of its dark melodic tones and strong, dramatic vocals. The one thing that pulls you out of that sense of dread are those horns, which have a nice, lifting effect amidst the darkness. (video)

Week In Review: New Songs/Music Videos You Need to Check Out (October 20-26, 2019)

Another week has come and gone, and with it came a fresh batch of new music to enjoy.  Aside from some highly anticipated songs and music videos from the likes of Kesha, Coldplay, The 1975 and Selena Gomez, you also had some great new under-the-radar pop and rock tracks from We The Kings, Mondo Cosmo, Yacht Rock Revue and more hit the internet over the last seven days.

Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, loves new music. That’s why we’ve once again scoured the internet for the week’s hottest new songs and music videos. Here are seven (and a few more) that are worth taking a look back at this weekend.

1.       We The Kings, “Turn It Up”: “Turn It Up” is a tight pop-punk song that’s heavier on the rock side than a lot of what they have released in the last few years. It kind of sounds a bit like a less coarse version of Blink-182’s new sound. The song’s upbeat melody and steady rhythm section really make you want to get up and dance, making it perfect for the band’s upcoming fall tour. (video)

2.        Leonard Cohen, “Happens to the Heart”: There is something about Leonard Cohen’s spoken vocal delivery on “Happens to the Heart,” the first single off his upcoming posthumous final album, that’s both haunting and mesmerizing. Cohen gets philosophical here, theorizing about knowing one’s own heart against an ethereal, minimal instrumental backdrop that lets his words shine. (video)

3.       Locket, “Hunnie”: “Hunnie” is a sweet love song that will make your heart swoon. The beginning is soft and sincere, a near-acoustic ballad sang directly to you. By the middle, there’s more instrumentation and a grander, more confident confession of love before winding back down to the beginning confessional tone. (video)

4.       Mondo Cozmo, “Come On”: Mixing elements of Brit-pop and bold indie-rock, “Come On” is radio rock that will satisfy multiple generations. Singer Josh Ostrander’s confident vocals, the slightly distorted guitars and the honey-like tempo come together to form something anthemic and memorable. (video)

5.       Yacht Rock Revue, “Step”: “Step’s” disco rock vibe is infectious. From the first notes you’re sucked in, destined to dance along to the smooth groove and catchy melody. The sax solo and female guest vocal are nice touches to an already gripping track. (video)

6.       Sheppard, “Die Young”: Okay, so this was released last week, but it’s still amazing. “Die Young” is a big pop-rock jam with a catchy hook and fun, memorable melody. The chorus soars high with a beat drop that’s just begging for a live dance floor to go wild. (video)

7.       Wicca Phase Springs Eternal, “Hardcore”: “Hardcore’s” mix of goth darkness and sparse electronic instrumentation is intriguing. The vocal melody sounds like something from The Cure, except all of the instruments have been taken over by a computer. Together with the steady (likely computerized) snare beat, the track pulls you in and leaves you mesmerized for two-and-a-half minutes. (video)

Five More Dark & Creepy Rock Songs for Your Halloween Playlist

It’s Halloween time again! The holiday of ghouls and demons provides many with the chance to celebrate their love of the occult with spooky décor, costumes and haunting music. But before you put on “Thriller” for the thousandth time, why not look for something a little more off-beat.

If you haven’t caught our previous Halloween song lists (1, 2 & 3), Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, is back to bring you even more off-beat horror rock songs to add to your Halloween party playlist. Here are five sure to up the creepy factor at your next get-together.

1.       My Chemical Romance, “Helena”: The dark, theatrical nature of “Helena” is haunting. Written by frontman Gerard Way about the passing of he and bassist Mikey Way’s grandmother, you get this sense of mourning and anger from it. The combined sadness and anger explode in the big outbursts of the chorus, while the verses seem internal and head-y. (video)

2.       Ice Nine Kills, “IT Is The End”: If you’re into horror films, than Ice Nine Kills latest album, ‘The Silver Scream’ would be right up your alley. Each song is about a classic of the genre and any one would be perfect for a Halloween playlist. But there’s something about “IT Is The End,” a spin on the ‘IT’ franchise, that is just special. From the circus theme woven into the melody to the somewhat unhinged vocals of frontman Spencer Charnas, this retelling is as disconcerting as the film itself. Also, Charnas’ clown costume in the music video is terrifying. (video) (Note, the video is the final part of a series. Watch parts 1 to 4 first because otherwise you will spoil the ending for yourself.)

3.       Nine Inch Nails, “Closer”: One of Nine Inch Nails’ most well-known tracks, “Closer” is also one of the creepier tunes the band has released. The lyrics are a bit two-faced, on the one hand they read like a sex offender vocalizing their inner demons, and on the other crying out for help. Trent Reznor’s slow, almost spoken vocal delivery is deliberate against the song’s dark, creeping, metallic instrumental, adding to this cloying unwell feeling you get from the song. (video)

4.       Bauhaus, “Bela Lugosi’s Dead”: Don’t listen to “Bela Lugosi’s Dead” in a quiet room in the dark. First off, the song is melodically eerie with its screeching guitars that feel like mice scurrying around a room and Peter Murphy’s haunting deep vocals. Then towards the end you have these moments when the song cuts out and are filled with unsettling noises like knocking on a door or a brass instrument that sounds like moving furniture. It’s definitely a sensory overload that will have you questioning your sanity. (video)

5.       AFI, “Miss Murder”: It’s hard to know what “Miss Murder” is referring to, mostly because AFI frontman Davey Havok won’t say. But it’s creepy, haunting lyrics have always hinted at something otherworldly, like an alien or cult waiting to be taken home by their ship or higher power. The passion with which Havok sings adds to the darkness, evoking points of both sharp power and deep pain all in one track. (video)

A lot of new music is released over the course of any given week. This week was no exception as we saw a wealth of new songs and music videos hit the internet, especially when it came to rock and pop. Jimmy Eat World, The National’s Matt Berninger and Marilyn Manson were just some of the artists to drop new tracks over the last seven days.

Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, loves new music. That’s why we’ve once again scoured the internet for some of the week’s best new songs and music videos. Here are nine (and a few more) that we think are worth a listen this weekend.

1.       Jimmy Eat World, “555”: “555” is a different sort of sound for Jimmy Eat World, trading in their “emo” sound for something more snappy and confident. The pre-chorus run chorus is triumphant leading into the big, full chorus that’s more Muse mixed with Sting than typical Jimmy Eat World. The video is especially strange for the band, this time going for a sci-fi, horror feel with frontman Jim Atkins playing the role of an evil cult leader. (video)

2.       Waterparks, “Easy To Hate”: Pop-punk band Waterparks just released their new album ‘Fandom’ last week and have now put out one final single/video from it. “Easy To Hate” has that bouncy, fun energy to get you excited. The verses are wordy and fast, leading into big sing-a-long chorus’ sure to be a hit at live shows. (video)

3.       BTS feat. Lauv, “Make It Right”: If you’re looking to get into K-pop, “Make It Right” is a good place to start. Lauv’s vocals on this reworking of the ‘Map of the Soul: Persona’ track work well to draw you into the song’s infectious pop. Then, BTS take you further in to the world of actual K-pop with the song’s sweet melody and heavier rapping. As they swap between English chorus and Korean verses, you get the best of western and eastern pop. (video)

4.       Marilyn Manson, “God’s Gonna Cut You Down”: Marilyn Manson lays off the shock for a little while with his latest single “God’s Gonna Cut You Down.” Manson chants the song’s menacing lyrics over an outlaw country beat and electric acoustic guitar, which makes the tone far less creepy than usual. It’s a different sound for him, but not unwelcome. (video)

5.       Wolf Parade, “Against The Day”: “Against The Day” hits you right out of the gate with a powerful blast of distorted guitar, heavy bass and buzzing, synth. The song maintains this bravado as frontmen Dan Boeckner and Spencer Krug start in with their echo-y vocals.  The result is a combination of 80s synth-rock and jagged Muse-like stadium rock with a sound big enough to fill a room. 6.       Sudan Archives, “Glorious”: “Glorious” has this unique, exotic sound to it that sounds so natural and yet so different for western music. Her vocals sound like mid-2000s Rihanna while her fiddle-like violin playing brings in a middle-eastern vibe to the song’s bare-bones melody. (video)

7.       Matt Berninger feat. Phoebe Bridgers, “Walking on a String”: Starting out low-key and mellow, “Walking on a String” feels like an easy kind of love song. The National Frontman Matt Berninger and guest vocalist Phoebe Bridgers effortlessly trade vocal lines, their voices blending well when they come together to harmonize. The song gets more passionate and louder as it progresses before devolving into chaos near the end. However, Berninger and Bridgers never lose one another, their vocals uniting at the end of the song as if the extra guitars were never there. (video)

8.       Fran, “So Surreal”: “So Surreal” pulls you in its first few seconds with its upbeat, “cool” energy. Frontwoman Maria Jacobson’s vocals feel effortless amongst the bright melody and steady snare beat. It’s a good song to soundtrack a day wandering around a park with the sun overhead. (video)

9.       X, “Delta 88 Nightmare”: X have reunited and are back with “Delta 88 Nightmare,” a classic punk track that will take you back to the 1980s Los Angeles scene. Exene Cervenka’s terse and shouted vocals clash against the thrashy guitars for a bit of welcome dissonance. (video)

Music Film Events Coming to Theaters in 2019

Limited film engagements seem like all the rage right now. The latest band bringing their music to the big screen is INXS, who announced Wednesday (10/16) that their documentary ‘Mystify: Michael Hutchence’ will be coming to theaters for one night only on January 7. The film centers on frontman Hutchence in an attempt to get to know the singer through interviews and “new revelations.” Hutchence passed away in 1997 at the age of 37.

As stated, there are a lot of one-night-only music film experiences coming to theaters within the next few months. These upcoming films vary between concert experiences and documentaries and run the gambit of genres from rock and metal to K-Pop and R&B.

 Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, is taking a look at some of the films headed to theaters this year. Here are eight to keep an eye out for.

1.       INXS: ‘Mystify’ won’t be the first special event INXS is doing this year. On December 9, the band will be bringing ‘INXS: Live Baby Live,’ a concert film shot during their 1991 Wembley Stadium concert, back to the big screen. The film has been restored and includes an extra performance that was left out of the original.

2.       Metallica: In September, Metallica played two special shows with the San Francisco Symphony to celebrate the 20^th anniversary of their historic ‘S&M’ concerts. Dubbed ‘S&M2,’ a film version combining the two performances followed, hitting theaters on October 9. The film became one of the highest-grossing global cinema rock events ever, taking in $5.5 million from more than 3700 showings worldwide. Due to popular demand, the film will be coming back to theaters for one more night on October 30.

3.       Lionel Richie: In 2015, R&B legend Lionel Richie headlined the famed Glastonbury festival during its coveted Sunday teatime slot. ‘Lionel Richie at Glastonbury’ captures that performance for the world to see. Accompanying the film will be a special introductory feature called ‘Road to Glastonbury’ with commentary from Richie, as well as concert and documentary footage. The event takes place November 19. Tickets go on sale Friday.

4.       BTS: Arguably the biggest group to come out of the recent K-Pop explosion, BTS has had special concert film screenings in the past. But those pale in comparison to what they have in store for October 27. ‘BTS World Tour ‘Love Yourself: Speak Yourself’ [The Final]’ finds the group simulcasting the final show of their ‘Speak Yourself’ tour to theaters across the US just hours after it ends in Seoul, South Korea. Theaters in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Japan and South Korea get one step better, the actual livestream of the event as it happens.  

5.       Bruce Springsteen: Even though Bruce Springsteen has decided not to tour behind his latest album, ‘Western Stars,’ that doesn’t mean fans won’t be able to hear the new songs live. For ‘Western Stars’ (the film), Springsteen decided film himself in a nearly 100-year-old barn with a 30-piece orchestra playing the album front to back. Interspersed with the performance is archival footage from throughout his career and new interviews with The Boss. Fans will have two opportunities to see the film in theaters, October 19 and October 23.

6.       John Fogerty: John Fogerty has been traversing North America on his “My 50 Year Trip” tour this year, celebrating a half-century since playing the iconic Woodstock Festival. The former Creedence Clearwater Revival frontman will be bringing the tour to the big screen on November 11 with concert film ‘John Fogerty – 50 Year Trip: Live at Red Rocks,’ which captures his June 20^th performance at the famed Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado.

7.       Lynyrd Skynyrd: Over the last year-and-a-half, Lynyrd Skynyrd has been crossing the globe on their ‘Last of the Street Survivors’ farewell tour, celebrating a more than four decade career on the road. Following its conclusion this weekend, the band will be bringing the tour to the big screen on November 7. The film captures the band’s September 2, 2018 hometown show in Jacksonville, Florida, what was originally supposed to be the final night of the tour.

8.       Neil Young: Last week, Neil Young announced the release date of a documentary called ‘Mountaintop,’ which chronicles the making of this upcoming album ‘Colorado’ with Crazy Horse, their first collaboration in seven years. The film hits theaters for one night only on October 22, just days before the release of ‘Colorado.’ This won’t be the last you hear of Young in the movie department, as the singer has 14 more in the works.

Over the next few months, a lot of top artists are headed to the big screen for once-in-a-lifetime film events. Whether it’s BTS’ livestreamed concert or Neil Young’s album documentary, there are some special music experiences waiting for you at the movie theater this fall. Week In Review: New Songs / Music Videos You Need to Check Out (October 6-12, 2019)

Another week has come and gone, and with it came a lot of new music. This week saw some great new songs and music videos hit the internet, especially when it came to rock and pop, including tracks from the likes of Green Day, Yungblud, Noah Cyrus, Bishop Briggs and more.

Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, loves new music. That’s why we’ve once again scoured the internet for some of the week’s best new songs and music videos. Here are seven (and a few more), that we think are worth taking a look back at this weekend.

1.       Green Day, “Fire, Ready, Aim”: Whether people like it or not, Green Day is very good at writing catchy songs and doing it unapologetically. Their latest single, “Fire, Ready, Aim,” is just that. It’s spinning, surf-rock/garage-rock guitars grab your attention and make you want to move. The bass and drum have that classic Green Day feel, not losing sight of the band’s backbone sound within all the experimentation. Like with “Father of All…,” the sound is very Foxboro Hot Tubs by way of The Replacements, which is a direction the band has been veering towards for a while. (video)

2.       Yungblud feat. Dan Reynolds, “Original Me”: Yungblud and Imagine Dragons don’t really seem like two artists whose sounds would work well together. And to be honest, they don’t. Imagine Dragons frontman Dan Reynolds feels a bit lost on the track since it’s not really the kind of music he’s usually associated with. That being said, the song itself is solid. Yungblud and Reynolds trade off vocals pretty cleanly as the song marches forward with that edgy punk-rap swagger that has made the former so popular recently. (video)

3.       Noah Cyrus, “Lonely”: Noah Cyrus’ latest single “Lonely” is a passionate plea for someone to hear her struggling. The song’s minimalistic instrumentation only amplifies its message and intensity, making her lightly husky voice a powerful focal point. (video)

4.       Bishop Briggs, “Jekyll & Hide”: Bishop Briggs’ deep, rough voice is perfect for the slinky-yet-sharp dual personas of her latest single “Jekyll & Hide.” The song is melodic at the verse and tough and cold at the chorus and breakdown, giving it a good sonic representation of the story it’s based on. The beat drop is enough to make you want to bob your head along. (video)

5.       Cursive, “I Am Goddamn”: “I Am Goddamn” has a sound that’s reminiscent of ‘Happy Hollow’-era Cursive. Backed by crunchy guitars, the song’s melody is heavy and harsh. Its stop-and-go pacing, as well as Tim Kasher’s sometimes panicked vocal, contributes to the song’s hurried feeling. (video)

6.       Liz Phair, “Good Side”: “Good Side” marks Liz Phair’s return to music after nearly a decade away, and what a way to return. Mellow and melodic, the song’s slow, honest delivery recaptures the vibe of her early work, only less upbeat. (video)

7.       Simple Plan, State Champs & We The Kings, “Where I Belong”: Many bands will release an EP when they want to promote a stacked tour line-up. Simple Plan has taken that notion a step further with “Where I Belong,” a new single that also features tour mates State Champs and We The Kings. Considering there are three bands on the track, it’s actually very balanced. It sounds like a collaborative effort that finds a meeting point between all of their sounds rather than each band dragging the sound to make it more one style or another. If you’re into early 2000s pop-punk, in fact, you should definitely give this a listen. (video)

Week In Review: New Songs / Music Videos You Need to Check Out (September 29-October 5, 2019)

Another week has come to an end and with it came a lot of new music. This week saw some great new songs and music videos from the likes of Dan + Shay, that dog., Chapel and more hit the internet.

Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, loves new music. That’s why we’ve once again scoured the internet for the hottest new tracks released over the last seven days. Here are seven (and a few more) we think are worth checking out this weekend.

1.       Chapel, “Friends”: A song about trying to find the perfect work-life balance, “Friends” attempts to warn that pushing people away too much can be detrimental to one’s own happiness. Though sad, the band doesn’t wallow in self-pity, instead opting to remain upbeat. The synth-pop tune’s steady drum beat and cheery guitars keep it rolling on, underlining its catchy melody. (video)

2.       Dan + Shay feat. Justin Bieber, “10,000 Hours”: Dan + Shay released a heavily teased new song this week. “10,000 Hours,” which features pop pretty-boy Justin Bieber, is another pop-country hit with that signature Dan + Shay sweet, swoon-worthy sound on full display. Bieber’s voice assimilates well with Shay Mooney’s and doesn’t drag the song in his usual dance-influenced pop direction. For a group that loves love and regularly puts their own wives in their videos (see “Speechless”), the addition of Bieber’s new wife into the fold on the “10,000 Hours” video is very timely and sweet. 3.       Marianas Trench, “Don’t Miss Me?”: Lyrically, “Don’t Miss Me?” finds lead singer Josh Ramsay wondering if a former flame misses him as much as he hints that he misses her. Subject matter like that doesn’t usually translate to upbeat love song, but Marianas Trench makes it work with a very catchy and repetitive pop melody that makes you dance while still remaining sympathetic. 4.       that dog., “Just The Way”: The latest single from that dog.’s first new album in more than 22 years, ‘Old LP,’ “Just The Way” is an upbeat punk / alt-rock tune that’s catchy, fast and loud. The video, published by Funny Or Die and starring Jack Black and Maya Rudolph, is a twisted take on ‘Three’s Company’ where the roommates (played by the band) take their pranks too far and instead try to kill each other with disastrous and, unfortunately funny results. 5.       Michael Stipe, “Your Capricious Soul”: Former R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe has released his first solo song. “Your Capricious Soul” is a quiet, low-key track with a steady bass line and piano accompaniment. There’s not much flair to it, but it is a nice track to chill out to and do some good. Proceeds from the track go to climate change activist group Extinction Rebellion. (video)

6.       Anti-Flag, “Christian Nationalist”: Brutally political, Anti-Flag take aim at today’s atmosphere of bigotry and hate on their latest single “Christian Nationalist.” The song is a catchy piece of melodic pop-punk with bitingly direct lyrics that easily get their point across. (video)

7.       Kele Okereke, “Between Me And My Maker”: I don’t know if I’ve ever heard a song about death be so melodic and uplifting. “Between Me And My Maker” has a comforting, spiritual feel to it that makes it a pleasant listen. (video)
